Danzig vs. Cerrone now set for UFC 131

HeavyMMA.com is reporting that a lightweight bout between Donald Cerrone and Mac Danzig is officially set for UFC 131 this June in Vancouver.

A lightweight tilt between WEC veteran Donald Cerrone and former “Ultimate Fighter” winner Mac Danzig is official for UFC 131.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced the booking earlier today.

Danzig, who struggled to live up to expectations after winning season six of “The Ultimate Fighter,” found redemption in two of his last three bouts, earning a unanimous decision victory over Justin Buchholz at UFC 109 and knocking out Joe Stevenson at UFC 124.

His last defeat was a controversial one, coming against Matt Wiman at UFC 115.

The purchase of Strikeforce a major landmark in MMA history

As HeavyMMA.com points out, Zuffa’s purchase of Strikeforce moves us one step closer to seeing the best fighters in the world competing against each other.

There are seminal moments is everyone’s life where they remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when something historic happened.

Saturday morning, I was sitting at the desk in my office, working on a piece for UFC 128 when the news broke that Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC, had purchased Strikeforce.

Think I’m over-extending by calling this move historic? Think again.

While UFC President Dana White repeatedly told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani “it’s business as usual” in the video interview that broke the news to the masses, the truth is that this deal dramatically changes the landscape of mixed martial arts moving forward. The two premier organizations in MMA may continue to run as separate and distinct entities for now, but the business of mixed martial arts has forever been changed by this announcement.

Soszynski vs. Perosh likely for UFC 131?

HeavyMMA.com confirms that a light heavyweight fight between Anthony Perosh and Krzysztof Soszynski is in the works for UFC 131 this June.

A light heavyweight tilt between Anthony Perosh and Krzysztof Soszynski is in the works for UFC 131 in June.

MMAjunkie.com learned of the match up from sources close to the event.

Soszynski, a seven-fight veteran of the UFC, last competed at UFC 122 last November, earning a unanimous decision victory over Goran Reljic. The victory was his second in four fights and served as a rebound after a technical knockout loss to Stephan Bonnar at UFC 116.

Like his upcoming opponent, Perosh is also coming off a victory, having defeated Tom Blackledge via submission in front of thousands of fellow Australians at UFC 127 last month and moving his record with the promotion to 1-3. The three losses came against Mirko Filipovic, Jeff Monson, and Christian Wellisch.

The 205 lb. tilt will take place on June 11 at UFC 131 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The card features a heavyweight clash between former champion Brock Lesnar and knockout machine Junior dos Santos.

Jon Jones is done talking about Rashad, wants to focus on Shogun

Jon Jones is tired of being asked about training partner Rashad Evans and instead wants to concentrate on his upcoming light heavyweight title bout with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128.

From HeavyMMA.com:

Jon Jones is fed up with answering questions about Rashad Evans.

Heading into the biggest fight of his life against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the UFC 128 main event, Jon Jones is done answering questions about training partner Rashad Evans.

Evans was originally scheduled to face Rua on the March 19 event in Newark, N.J., but was forced out of the light heavyweight title bout due to a knee injury. Jones replaced him as Rua’s opponent.

Jones has been asked countless times about Evans and if they’d fight each other leading up to next weekend’s match up, and he’s done discussing it.

“I want to make it clear to other reporters that I absolutely hate when people mention Rashad Evans, especially throughout this training camp,” Jones said on Wednesday.

“He’s a friend of mine, but I’m fighting Mauricio ‘Shogun,’ one of the best fighters that’s been around for a long time. For people to even be mentioning Rashad Evans right now I think is ludicrous.

“Rashad is not in my mind. He’s not in my being. He has absolutely zero to do with my heart and who I am right now,” added Jones.

MMA Pound for Pound Rankings: March 2011

Did Jon Fitch’s performance at UFC 127 drop him in HeavyMMA.com’s latest pound for pound rankings?

1. Anderson Silva
Silva’s playing the waiting game at the moment and won’t have any idea what his future holds until after UFC 129 at the end of April. It might be a few months after that before Silva’s next opponent is even decided, because Georges St. Pierre certainly doesn’t sound too sure about moving up to middleweight any more. Either way, a win by St. Pierre will determine what is next for the reigning middleweight champion.

2. Georges St. Pierre
The Canadian is in the midst of his training camp for UFC 129, putting all of his focus on training for his title defense against Jake Shields. He’ll walk into the cage on that night as a national hero in front of the biggest live crowd in North American mixed martial arts history, but there’s a good chance he loses that fight. Shields is no joke.

3. Jose Aldo
Aldo finally makes the first defense of his UFC featherweight title at UFC 129 against Mark Hominick. Few give Hominick a chance – and for good reason – but the Canadian can probably match Aldo in the striking department. Everything else will probably give him some trouble.
