Elgin Baylor out as Clippers’ GM, Dunleavy in

Things are going from bad to worse in Clipperland…

Elgin Baylor is out as vice president of basketball operations with the Los Angeles Clippers, and coach Mike Dunleavy will assume his responsibilities as general manager.

While Dunleavy said Baylor had decided to resign after spending 22 years as an executive with the team, Baylor painted a little different picture when reached by The Los Angeles Times on Tuesday.

“There is a dispute, and on the advice of my attorney they did not want me to discuss it,” Baylor said, according to the newspaper. “That’s all I can say.”

A source told ESPN The Magazine’s Ric Bucher that Baylor resigned because the Clippers were willing to let him retain his salary and title but were stripping him of any authority. The source also said the Clippers were willing to have him return in a consultant’s role. The Clippers are now not expected to fill his position.

Now the team has handed over the keys to Mike Dunleavy, who has a .478 all time record as a coach, including a 175-235 (.427) with the Clippers. He was already mediocre at his job; now he has GM duties to boot.

Rashard Mendenhall makes rookie mistake

Steelers’ rookie running back Rashard Mendenhall made a sketchy decision this week. He decided to send a text message to Ravens’ rookie Ray Rice saying that he was going to have a big game against the Ravens’ top-ranked defense.

Obviously, Rice, who often praises the Ravens’ defense as “scary,” passed the text message along to his teammates, who are not taking Mendenhall’s proclamation lightly.

“He said later that he was just joking, but it’s too late,” Ravens linebacker Bart Scott said. “Thanks for the bulletin-board material, rookie.”

A tailback having a big game against Baltimore, by the way, is a rarity.

The Ravens haven’t allowed a 100-yard rusher in 21 straight games, the longest active streak in the league. Baltimore has given up an average of just 161.5 yards through its first two games, 72.5 fewer than the league’s No. 2 unit — which belongs to Pittsburgh (234.0). The Ravens have had a top-10 defense in each of the past five seasons.

With this bulletin board material, Mendenhall’s chances of having a big game are slim to none, and slim just left town.

Monta Ellis injury occurred on a moped

He tried to tell the Golden State Warriors that he was hurt playing basketball, but the injuries Monta Ellis weren’t consistent with that story. It turns out Ellis was injured in a low-speed moped accident.

The team has not decided how to punish Ellis for violating the terms of his new six-year, $66 million deal by participating in a banned activity and trying to cover it up.

Since riding a moped is prohibited under the uniform player contract, the Warriors could move to terminate Ellis’ deal, though such a move seems highly unlikely.

A possible punishment for Ellis is a heavy fine or suspension. It’s also possible the Warriors will let Ellis off the hook completely, chalking the incident up to the youngster’s maturation process.

The question seems to be what steps the Warriors will take to punish Ellis for violating the terms of his contract, but what I really want to know is why Ellis was riding a moped in the first place? What’s the upside?

Fantasy Football Update: 9/25

Neither Brian Westbrook nor Donovan McNabb are expected to practice this week. McNabb is listed as probable and is likely to play, but Westy is listed as questionable and is trying to recover from a high ankle sprain in seven days. That doesn’t usually happen, so my gut says make other plans at RB, especially since the Eagles play on Sunday night. Correll Buckhalter is Westy’s backup (not Lorenzo Booker) but he’s not a great option against a tough Bears defense. Still, if you’re a desperate Westbrook owner, Buckhalter is a great pickup. You can stick him in your lineup and then sub Westy in if it looks like he’s going to play…Willie Parker is likely to miss the next two weeks with a knee sprain. This is an opportunity for Rashard Mendenhall to earn some playing time. Thus far, he’s been an afterthought in the Steelers’ running game. The bad news is that he has a rough matchup with the Ravens in Week 4, but things look much better against the Jaguars in Week 5…Damon Huard is going to start for the Chiefs, which is an upgrade for Dwayne Bowe, Tony Gonzalez and probably Larry Johnson as well. Bowe is off to a good start, but Gonzo and LJ have been a little spotty thus far. Huard isn’t going to set the world on fire, but he has played well in stretches before and since the Chiefs always seem to be trailing, all fantasy owners need right now is a guy who can complete passes against a prevent defense…In a mysterious move, Trent Green will replace Marc Bulger as QB1 in St. Louis. Green is old and fragile, so this looks like a downgrade for the entire St. Louis offense, including Torry Holt and Steven Jackson. Both players are still startable, but do so at your own peril…If you’re in need of a QB this week, Brian Griese isn’t a bad option. He threw the ball 67 times against the Bears and should find some success against a Green Bay secondary that will be without CB Al Harris. The Packers figure to put up some points, so the Bucs will likely have to throw to stay in the game.

Why doesn’t Troy Brown have a job?

The NFL heads into Week 3 with, as usual, more questions raised than answers provided.

Why aren’t the Chargers 2-0?

Can the Patriots make a Super Bowl run without Brady? Will they even make the playoffs?

Is Aaron Rodgers really this good?

Was Brandon Marshall serious when he said in the preseason that he was going to catch 140 passes this year? Does he know he’s got 14 more games to get there?

Did Tatum Bell actually think he would get away with it?

Who killed Marc Bulger and Larry Johnson?

Did DeSean Jackson do it on purpose? No, seriously. The guy has a monster ego, so maybe he figured that dropping the ball before he crossed the goalline would make for a bigger story than a rookie simply snagging his first TD pass. …Okay, maybe not; but still….

Who put a voodoo hex on Seattle’s receivers?

But one of the more interesting questions floating out there is, why doesn’t Troy Brown have a job? He’s not a game changer by any stretch of the imagination, but he’s dependable. He’s also versatile, being able to play receiver or defensive back; battle-tested, having spent nine years in New England; and, of course, he’s a proven winner, playing a key role on three championship teams.

True, Brown is 37 and has a sketchy injury history, but wouldn’t he make sense to a lot of teams as added depth at receiver and in the secondary? Aren’t the Seahawks down three or 12 receivers? The Saints seem to make some sense, considering the Marques Colston injury and their leaky defense. As a Browns fan, I can personally vouch for Cleveland’s crummy play on each side of the ball, and with Donte Stallworth and Joe Jurivicius both down, there’s a need at receiver.

Of course, this all goes out the window if Brown simply isn’t healthy, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Earlier this week, a Boston Herald report said that Brown was set to retire today, but now the Boston Globe says Brown is still on the fence.

“We’ll see,” [Brown] responded. “There’s always a chance [of playing].”

When guys like Koren Robinson are getting plucked off the scrapheap, how is it that Troy Brown is still unemployed?
