At this point, even Kobe thinks LeBron is the MVP

There’s no doubt that LeBron James is having the best season of his young career. It’s not so much that his numbers are better — it’s the Cavs’ winning ways that have LeBron atop the short list for this year’s MVP. He even has the vote of the player who’s in second place (at least on my list).

Bryant seemed mildly uncomfortable when asked for his MVP choice near the season’s halfway point.

“LeBron,” he said. “Leave me alone about that stuff.”

He then expanded upon his thoughts.

“I’m a big fan of his, obviously,” he said. “I just think the world of him. Playing with him this summer [at the Beijing Olympics], and seeing his work ethic and what he’s about, I just think he’s terrific.”

It probably kills the competitor in Kobe to admit that, but it just goes to show the nature of the MVP race right now. LeBron has improved defensively, is superior in most statistical measures, and he has guided his team to a great record despite not having as much help as Kobe does.

Tonight’s game at the Staples Center should be a good one. I hope we are treated to more than a handful of possessions where the two superstars guard each other.

I’d recommend watching the Nuggets/Rockets at 2 PM, flipping between the Pitt/Syracuse game and the Suns/Celtics at 7 PM and 8 PM, respectively, and capping the night with the Cavs/Lakers tilt at 10:30 PM. Don’t forget that the Australian Open starts today — coverage is on ESPN2 and the Tennis Channel.

Legendary NBA rookie prank

Chris Tomasson of the Rocky Mountain News wrote a story about memorable NBA pranks. Here’s an excerpt:

In 2004-05, actress Lucy Liu was sitting in the front row at the Staples Center and Lakers rookie Tony Bobbitt fibbed to teammates that he knew Liu and she was looking his way.

Lakers veterans, spearheaded by Vlade Divac and [Devean] George, sprang into action. They had a ballboy bring a note to Bobbitt with a cell phone number that was said to be Liu’s but really was Divac’s.

A female Lakers employee recorded an outgoing message on Divac’s phone. It wasn’t long before Bobbitt was leaving voice and text messages for Liu.

Lakers players howled with laughter while reading Bobbitt’s attempts at poetry. Messages were sent back that Bobbitt thought were from Liu.

“The whole team got involved,” George said. “He said he went on a date with her, and we knew he didn’t because it was Vlade’s phone he was calling and texting.”

Soon, the veterans moved in for the kill. They sent a limousine to take Bobbitt to a restaurant, with Bobbitt thinking it had been sent by Liu for a meeting.

Hidden cameras recorded the entire episode. But while Bobbitt waited at a table with a bottle of champagne for his dream girl, Lakers teammates instead arrived.

“We jumped out, and he said, ‘She’s coming,’ ” George said. “We said, ‘Quit lying.’ It started as a small prank and grew since he had kept lying for three or four weeks. We got the whole thing on DVDs. When guys on other teams came through, they’d say, ‘You got one of those DVDs?’ We called it ‘Bobbitt Gone Wild.’ ”

As it turned out, that was all Bobbitt was known for in his NBA career. He was waived in November 2004 after playing just two games and never was seen again.

That’s classic.

LeBron James chooses Browns uniform in commercial – is he staying in Cleveland?

Cleveland Cavs’ star LeBrown James recently donned a Browns uniform in a State Farm commercial that will air during the NFC and AFC Championship Games on Sunday. And actually, chose to wear a Browns uniform might be more appropriate wording.

At 6-foot-8 and 250 pounds, James often describes himself as a football player. He was an All-Ohio selection at Akron’s St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and still plays flag football at the school during the offseason.

James said he had input into the commercial, which shows using some of his basketball skills to help the Browns on the football field.

“I chose what team I wanted to wear, what I wanted to do and which routes I wanted to run,” he said.

James has been criticized by Cleveland fans for supporting the Cowboys and New York Yankees. He triggered a public outcry when he wore a Yankees cap to an Indians playoff game two years ago and again to a Browns home game against Dallas last season .

So was it tough pulling on an orange Browns helmet and not one with a star on it?

“No,” James said with a wink. “I love the Browns.”

Hmm. Depending on how far Cavs fans want to take LeBron’s comments, maybe the superstar is leaning towards staying in Cleveland instead of bolting for the Big Apple like many expect? Hey, Cavs fans can hope anyways, right?

Andrea Bargnani is starting to “get it”

Remember Andrea Bargnani? He was the 20 year-old Italian that the Raptors picked #1 overall in the 2006 NBA Draft. During his first two seasons, he struggled with his shot — 43% in 2006 and 39% in 2007 — and didn’t rebound very well for a seven-footer (< 4 boards a game). Some even started to throw around labels like "disappointment" or even "bust." But even with those shooting struggles, Bargnani managed to score double-figures in each of his first two seasons, so the potential was clearly there. After a pretty strong start to the 2008-09 season -- 14.7 ppg in the first seven games -- Bargnani had his ups and downs coming off the Raptor bench. It wasn't until Jermaine O'Neal's injury that he really started to flourish. Since O'Neal has been out of the lineup (Dec. 29), Bargnani has averaged 22.3 points and 7.1 rebounds, while shooting 55% from the field and an amazing 58% from long range. O'Neal may return as early as tonight and it's unclear what kind of effect this will have on Bargnani and/or his minutes. Bargnani's emergence has started some rumors about the possibility of trading O'Neal, who hasn't been a great fit in Toronto. His contract runs for another season at the tune of $23 million (wow!) but expires before the infamous summer of 2010. One idea would be for the Raptors to swap O'Neal for Shawn Marion, who could play small forward alongside Bargnani and Chris Bosh, but the Heat would probably prefer to let Marion's deal expire and use the cap space this summer or next on a free agent like Carlos Boozer (or even Bosh). O'Neal just hasn't been able to stay healthy over the last few seasons and I'm sure his giant contract has more than a few owners wary of trading for him.
