Sixers reintroduce emotional Iverson at a press conference

Of all the superstars in the NBA, I don’t remember one struggling with his declining game as much as Allen Iverson is right now. He has made it clear that he is unwilling to accept a role off the bench, and his game is such (i.e. ball-dominant, volume-shooter) that’s it’s very difficult for a franchise to insert him into the starting lineup without completely rocking the team’s chemistry. Forget about any contenders wanting to roll the dice; he’s just too much of a wild card for that.

So Philly — with Louis Williams’ injury — looks like the best place for him. The franchise knows he’ll put butts back in the seats and he knows that he’ll get heavy minutes.

It’s a win-win, but will the Sixers win any games?

Chris Bosh doesn’t like winter (or losing)

We knew this was coming eventually. We weren’t sure which soon-to-be free agent would be the first one to crack (Bosh? Stoudemire? Joe Johnson?), but the smart money was on Bosh since it has been some time since the Raptors were part of the East’s elite. The team is off to a 7-13 start, punctuated by last night’s 146-115 loss to the Hawks.

Per the Toronto Star:

“The defensive effort hasn’t been there for a while. We didn’t magically appear last on the charts defensively,” said Chris Bosh. “I mean, tonight was just a total embarrassment. We couldn’t stop anybody. We haven’t stopped anybody all year.”

It’s nice that he’s using the term “we” there, but Bosh has a reputation for being a pretty good defender, and the guys around him — Jose Calderon, Hedo Turkoglu, Andrea Bargnani — are far more offensive-minded.

Then there’s this bit of info from the Miami Herald

Not only will the Heat’s chances of signing Chris Bosh next summer be helped if the Raptors keep struggling, but a former Raptors official said Bosh doesn’t like Toronto’s cold winters. Bosh isn’t keen on playing in his native Texas but has said the Heat “seems to be an attractive place, playing with Dwyane Wade and playing in Miami.”

If the Raptors keep playing sub-.500 ball, there’s a great chance that Bosh lands in Miami next year. If that happens, Dwyane Wade is almost sure to re-sign, and the Heat will once again join the East’s elite.

Iverson signs with the 76ers

Per ESPN…

“In light of the recent injury to Lou Williams, which will sideline him for close to eight weeks, we felt that Allen was the best available free agent guard to help us at this time,” Stefanski said in a release.

This reconciliation was once thought foolish after their acrimonious split three years ago. Iverson’s last game with Philadelphia was Dec. 6, 2006 in Chicago. He refused to play the fourth quarter and was banished from the team two days later. He was eventually traded to Denver as part of the Andre Miller deal, and bounced to Detroit before landing in Memphis.

With Williams out two months after surgery to fix his broken jaw, the Sixers were faced with the possibility of handing the keys over to rookie Jrue Holiday, who is only playing 13 minutes per game. Given their 5-13 starts, it’s clear that Philly is in desperation mode and felt that bringing Iverson back was the best choice.

There is too much talent on the Sixers’ roster to miss the playoffs, but unless Iverson is a good fit, that’s exactly what’s going to happen.

Line of the Night (12/1): Dwyane Wade

The Miami Heat came into last night’s game at the Rose Garden as losers of six of their last nine games, but Dwyane Wade led the way in a semi-surprising 107-100 win over the Trail Blazers. Even though Michael Beasley actually led the team in scoring (27), the offense ran through Wade, who posted 22 points, 12 assists and five rebounds in the win.

The Blazers were playing without LaMarcus Aldridge, so the loss is somewhat understandable. But this is the kind of game that Portland needs to win if they are to be taken seriously as contenders in the West.
