USA beats Russia, 89-79

Team USA struggled in the first half for all the same reasons why they generally struggle in international play: poor shot selection and one-on-one play on the offensive end. Russia hit its threes in the first two quarters and actually led by five deep into the second quarter. The U.S. led by five at halftime, and pulled away with a huge third quarter that was spearheaded by Russell Westbrook’s defense.

The Americans managed the game down the stretch and won somewhat comfortably. On the whole, it was a good win for the U.S., but the stretches of mediocre play are worrisome.

Kevin Durant led Team USA with 33 points.

(Games are listed by date and time)

Thursday, September 9

No. 21 Auburn vs. Mississippi State, 7:30PM ET
The Tigers have won eight of the last nine meetings between these two teams, including four straight on the road. After throwing for 186 yards and three touchdowns as well as rushing for 171 yards and two scores in a 52-26 win over Arkansas State last Saturday, Auburn’s Cameron Netwon was named the SEC’s offensive player of the week. He’ll have to be on top of his game tonight in Starkville, after Mississippi State held Memphis to only 41 yards rushing last Saturday in a 49-7 victory. This will be both teams’ conference opener.
Odds: Auburn –1.5 (56.5)

Friday, September 10

No. 23 West Virginia vs. Marshall, 7:00PM ET
This will be the fifth straight meeting between these two teams, as the Mountaineers have won the previous four meetings by a combined score of 141-43. Marshall was crushed 45-7 by Ohio State last week, while West Virginia routed Coastal Carolina, 38-0. Thundering Herd head coach Doc Holliday faces his alma mater and former boss Bill Stewart in this contest, and hopes that Marshall’s defense can improve on the 529 yards of total offense they allowed last week to the Buckeyes.
Odds: West Virginia –12 (47)

Saturday, September 11

San Jose State vs. No. 11 Wisconsin, 12:00PM ET
One week after getting crushed by Alabama, the Spartans will once again play the cupcake role when they take on a Badgers team that rolled UNLV 41-21 last Saturday. Wisconsin hasn’t lost a home opener since Colorado beat them 43-7 in 1995. This will only be the second meeting between these two programs, as the Badgers lead the all-time series 1-0. For San Jose State to have a chance, it’ll have to slow down a Wisconsin running game that amassed 278 yards on the ground last week.
Odds: Wisconsin –38 (56)

Carmelo prefers the Knicks or Bulls?

According to an ‘NBA source’ of Marc J. Spears, Carmelo Anthony wants to be traded to the Knicks or the Bulls.

The Knicks have limited assets to offer the Nuggets, which makes the Bulls a more appealing potential trade partner. The Bulls can offer a replacement small forward in Luol Deng, as well as two young forwards in James Johnson and Taj Gibson. New York officials would like to make a run at signing Anthony next summer if he were to opt to become a free agent.

The prevailing notion is that the Knicks don’t have much to offer in the way of trade, but I’d rather do a deal for Danilo Gallinari, Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry than trade for Luol Deng and his bloated contract, which is worth $51 million over the next four years. I swear some of these pundits don’t even look at the salaries when they throw around trade scenarios. Deng is a solid player, but at almost $13 million a season, I would take a pass.

So unless the Bulls are able to add a couple of first round draft picks, the Knicks’ (potential) offer of Gallinari and Randolph would be better for the Nuggets. Thus far, it appears that the Knicks have been unwilling to include Randolph in the deal, which is a little mind-boggling. This is Carmelo Freaking Anthony we’re talking about — the Knicks should be pulling out all the stops to acquire him now, especially since the Spears article also states that he wants to be traded before the season starts. If he lands elsewhere, the chances that he’ll sign with the Knicks next summer decrease dramatically.

Sure, he could get traded to the Clippers or the Rockets and become a free agent next summer, but will those teams really pony up the best offer without some assurance that Carmelo is going to re-sign? The Nuggets will get the best deal from a team that knows Anthony is a long-term acquisition.

One other item from the Spears piece — Carmelo has yet to meet face-to-face with Masai Ujiri since he was hired as Denver’s new GM. That’s not a good sign for those holding out hope that he’ll be with the Nuggets long term.

Breaking News: Tom Brady involved in car accident, not hospitalized

ESPN.com is reporting that Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady was involved in a car accident this morning, although he wasn’t hospitalized and is expected to return to team facilities today. However, a passenger in the other car was taken to the hospital and it’s unclear at this point whether or not he or she suffered any serious injuries.

The accident occurred on the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Gloucester Street in Boston, according to the reports.

Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald told The Boston Globe that a sedan and a passenger van collided at 6:34 a.m. MacDonald told the newspaper that a traffic light was also struck.

Sources told The Globe that Brady was driving the sedan and was treated at the scene. Sources told the newspaper that Brady got out of his car but that the “Jaws of Life” had to be used to free a passenger in the van.

Fire officials told the AP that a passenger in one vehicle was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life threatening.

It’s good to hear that the passenger in the van doesn’t have life-threatening injuries and I hope that his or her condition doesn’t change for the worse.

Brady is incredibly fortunate that he didn’t suffer any serious injuries, not only for his current and long-term health, but also because he’s on the verge of signing a new contract. I hate to sound insensitive by bringing up money in a situation like this, but the fact is that had he gotten seriously hurt and couldn’t play anymore, the Patriots obviously wouldn’t be prepared to fork over an $80 million contract (or whatever figure he eventually signs for). I realize he isn’t hurting for money either way, but $80 million is $80 million.

But again, the most important thing here is that nobody was seriously injured. Hopefully we get some good news soon about the passenger in the other vehicle.

HeavyMMA.com chats with Kenny Florian

Dennis Melnik of HeavyMMA.com recently sat down with UFC fighter and top contender Kenny Florida, who says he isn’t afraid to adapt.

Kenny Florian’s philosophy is simple: “If you don’t adapt in this sport, you’re going to die. You’re going to lose.” There was a time Florian thought he had all the answers. He was on a six-fight wining streak that earned him a shot at UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn.

The last time Florian lost was his first chance at glory, when Sean Sherk defeated him in a unanimous decision at UFC 64. He learned a lot from that loss. The problem was Florian thought he had learned it all. He entered the Penn fight determined to “kill the master” and that’s when complacency came to collect. ‘The Prodigy’ dismantled ‘Ken-Flo’ in four rounds of fighting, putting him at a crossroads and forcing him to completely reevaluate his entire regimen. When Florian responded with two straight dominant victories in later UFC matches, Dana White noticed. While condemning Diego Sanchez for leaving the lightweight division for a return to welterweight, the UFC president cited Florian as an example of learning from failure.
