      Panthers’ Matt Moore and Dan Connor’s seasons over with

      If you’re a Carolina Panther fan and you haven’t asked for the sweet release of death yet, then kudos to you.

      Matt Moore was placed on injured reserve on Monday, ending his horrific season as a first-year starter. John Fox isn’t a big fan of Jimmy Clausen, but Carolina’s front office is committed to a youth movement and wants to see what it has in the second round pick.

      This is likely Fox’s final season with the Panthers, so Moore’s injury makes for an uneasy situation. He’ll likely get heat from the front office to play Clausen, even if he doesn’t think the rookie is ready to be on the field. His other option is Tony Pike (another rookie), but the former Cincinnati product isn’t ready either. Fox said Monday that the Panthers will add a quarterback, but the market is bare and with the team currently sitting at 1-7, it doesn’t matter who they bring in.

      Making matters worse, Dan Connor will also miss the rest of the season after he was injured in the Panthers’ loss to the Saints on Sunday. Carolina won’t activate Thomas Davis (PUP list), so their linebacker corps is extremely thin. Jon Beason will have to move back to the middle after playing the first half of the year on the weak side and Nic Harris or Jordan Senn will take over Beason’s old spot.

      It’s amazing to think that some pundits actually thought this was a playoff contender this year. Yikes.

      Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton fight after wreck

      During NASCAR’S AAA 500 at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, Jeff Burton accidentally put Jeff Gordon into the wall during a caution, so Gordon decided to take things into his own hands.

      Luckily for those of us who were too busy watching football all day, ESPN caught the interaction on tape! Ah, woo-hoo!

      I like Burton’s response. He knew he made a mistake and owned up to it. Because of this, Gordon comes off looking a little like a d-bag even though he was the victim.

      Jerry Jones to meet with coaching staff; Wade Phillips not at Valley Ranch

      Jerry Jones wants to meet with his coaching staff Monday afternoon following an embarrassing loss to the Packers on Sunday night. It’s unclear at this point if he plans to fire head coach Wade Phillips, who has yet to show up to Valley Ranch on Monday according to ESPN.com.

      If you’re an NFL betting man, you’re putting your money on “Canning -600.” After the ‘Boys lost to the Jaguars and Packers the past two weeks, one would think that things couldn’t get much worse in Dallas. But seeing how disinterested the players were in Green Bay on Sunday night, it stands to reason that things could get much, much worse.

      As I wrote following the game, it’s time for Jones to jettison Phillips and go in another direction. Jason Garrett certainly hasn’t done anything to deserve a promotion but why not see what he’s got over the final two months of the season? If you’re Jones, why continue to put yourself and your fan base through this nightmare when you don’t have to? Phillips may be a great guy, but his players have quit on him.

      And you know what? Maybe he’s quit, too. Nobody likes to be criticized and not all of the Cowboys’ issues can be pinned on Phillips. There’s only so much he can do before he has to trust that the players will step up and execute. But there’s probably part of him that just says, “Let’s get this thing over with already – I’m tired of waiting for the axe to fall.”

      Aaron Brooks out 4-6 weeks

      Just visited with Aaron Brooks. Said he’ll be out four to six weeks.

      The Rockets are 1-5 and can ill-afford to lose Brooks for any length of time, though they have one of the best backup point guards in the league in Kyle Lowry.

      Complicating matters, the Rockets play five of their next six (and 14-of-23) games on the road.

      Houston is scoring well (112.0 ppg, second only to the Lakers), but they’re giving up the second-most points as well. Their FG% allowed (44%) isn’t bad, but the Rockets are 26th in the league in defensive rebounding, so teams are getting loads of extra possessions.

      Brad Childress picks an odd time to poke fun at Brett Favre

      Do you know that guy that can’t help but to say stupid things at the most inopportune times? The guy that’s trying to be funny but everything comes out wrong and he only winds up looking like an idiot?

      I think Brad Childress is that guy.

      Following the Vikings’ dramatic come-from-behind win over the Cardinals on Sunday (a game in which Brett Favre threw for a career-high in yardage and rallied Minnesota from two touchdowns down in the fourth quarter), Childress took the opportunity to poke fun at his aging quarterback.

      Asked if he wanted any assurances from owner Zygi Wilf that he would be retained as the Vikings’ head coach for the remainder of the season, Childress said, “No, I’m not going to stand her like Brett Favre and tell you, compassionate, I need a hug. I’m all right.”

      Childress’ comment was referring to Favre’s answer to a question on Wednesday in which the quarterback joking said, “Is [Childress] compassionate as in give us a hug or something? Boy, I sure could use one, too.”

      Granted, Childress was only taking a stab at some lighthearted humor but a) it wasn’t funny and b) it didn’t make sense to anyone who didn’t hear Favre’s original comment. So Childress came off sounding like a jerk just moments after Favre essentially saved his job with that thrilling victory.

      At the end of the day, what Childress said wasn’t a big deal. But this is a man who waived Randy Moss without anyone (most notably Wilf) knowing, was booed by his home crowd when he stepped on the field for pre-game warm ups, then needed Favre to orchestrate a come-from-behind win against a lousy Arizona team and yet he found it appropriate to make a joke at his quarterback’s expense following the game. Just shut up already and be thankful you still have a job.
