      Rodriguez tells Michigan fans to “get a life”

      Facing the prospect of losing nine games, including a possible fifth-straight loss to arch-rival Ohio State, Michigan fans are in a sour mood. Naturally, some of them having been taking out their frustrations on their new coach. Rich Rodriguez is feeling the heat.

      Heading into his first Michigan-Ohio State game — where the Wolverines are expected to extend their dubious record with a ninth loss — he tried to deliver a message to fans who have lost touch.

      “It’s amazing some of the things that people would say (on a message board) or yell at you of a personal nature,” Rodriguez said Monday. “You almost want to tell them, `Get a life.’

      “There’s a whole lot bigger problems. Look at the economy.”

      College football’s winningest team has tumbled like the stock market, losing a school-record eight games and getting beat a Michigan Stadium-record five times at home.

      For the first time since 1974, the Wolverines will be relegated to watching bowl games.

      The 10th-ranked Buckeyes are favored to beat their rivals on Saturday at home by 19 points, matching the largest spread in series history, and win at least a share of the Big Ten title for the fourth year in a row.

      Syracuse fires head coach Greg Robinson

      The University of Syracuse has canned head coach Greg Robinson after yet another disastrous season for the Orange football program.

      Under Robinson, though, the Orange got worse. Robinson’s first team went 1-10, the first time since Syracuse began playing football in 1889 that it lost 10 games. There have been few, if any signs, of improvement since.

      The team’s poor performance under Robinson, who has had three offensive coordinators in his four seasons, also has hurt financially. In 21 homes games over Robinson’s first three seasons, more than 260,000 seats were not sold.

      In April, the school newspaper, The Daily Orange, reported that the football team lost money in 2006 for the first time since 1995, when athletic departments were first required to report their finances to the government.

      Average attendance fell to a 21-year low in 2007, and attendance numbers are again abysmal this season. Only 27,549 turned out for Pittsburgh in September, the smallest Carrier Dome crowd in 22 years.

      Somebody has to turn that program around because Syracuse has got too much great history to be one of the laughingstocks in college football. The problem is that they’re losing the recruiting battle because no player wants to play for Syracuse anymore.

      Too bad Jim Brown didn’t have any coaching experience because at least he would whip some players into shape. The ‘Cuse players would win out of fear of getting their ass kicked by Jim Brown.

      Beanie Wells has hops

      It’s amazing how trends develop in football. For example: players leaping over each other. I’ve seen it so many times that I’m almost beginning to expect a running back or wide receiver to leap over a defender to gain an extra couple of yards.

      Here’s the latest example of a player jumping over a defender as Beanie Wells does his Superman impression in leaping over an Illinois’ defensive back in the Buckeyes’ 30-20 victory last Saturday.

      Love the music. And as long as defensive backs are going to keep trying to tackle players low, I think we’ll see more plays like this.

      Barack Obama reiterates his support for a college football playoff

      President-elect Barack Obama appeared on “60 Minutes” tonight, and once again stated that he supports the idea of a college football playoff.

      Q: As President of the United States, what can you do, or what do you plan to do about getting a college football playoff for the National Championship?

      BO: This is important. I think any sensible person would say that if you’ve got a bunch of teams that have played throughout the season, and many of them have one loss or two losses – there’s no clear, decisive winner – that we should be creating a playoff system. Eight teams. That would be three rounds to determine a national champion. It would add three extra weeks to the season, you could trim back on the regular season. I don’t know any serious fan of college football who has disagreed with me on this, so I’m going to throw my weight around a little bit. I think it’s the right thing to do.

      Quick Hit Observations from College Football Week 12

      USC-Stanford– Raise your hand if you thought Stanford would upset USC again when the score was tied 17-17 at halftime. (Hand raised.)

      – Not that a ton of people care about Conference USA, but what a statement by Houston. I don’t know what was more impressive, the fact that the Cougars scored 70 points or that they held Tulsa to only 30 points.

      – Iowa’s Shonn Grenne (30 carries, 211 yards in a 22-17 win over Purdue) is a legit Heisman candidate for 2009.

      – What happened to Kansas? I realize they didn’t play any of the top teams in the Big 12 last year, but they’re better than 6-5 aren’t they?

      – They might have won 34-7, but Penn State’s win over Indiana was the least impressive 34-7 victory in some time.

      – One of the more underrated rivalries in college football is Georgia-Auburn. And the Tigers easily have one of the more underrated defenses in the nation.

      – Early upset watch for Week 13: Nevada over Boise State. The Wolf Pack’s offense is good enough to keep pace with the Broncos’ explosive attack and Boise hasn’t faced a tough opponent all year. (Unless you consider when they faced Oregon and their fourth string quarterback a tough opponent.)

      – Worst…Michigan…season…ever.

      – Underrated game of the week: No. 14 Ball State at Central Michigan next Wednesday.

      – College football fans were cheated by not getting to see Beanie Wells run for a full season. He was amazing against Illinois.

      – How about Troy hanging with LSU in Baton Rouge? Had they not turned the ball over three times, the Trojans could have pulled off one of the best upsets in college football this season.
