Bottom line: Young is a risk

Vince Young, the superstar college quarterback, led Texas to a National Championship with his quickness, skills and ability to gain yards on broken plays. He now is facing numerous questions about his ability to understand football with his “record setting” low score of 6 on the Wonderlic test. At the beginning of this year, I had my doubts about Young and continually questioned his arm. At the end of the season, he proved most people wrong with his ability to come up with big plays for the Longhorns.

The NFL is a complex and fast paced game. The first word from a rookie’s mouth when describing the NFL is speed. The players will then discuss how there are twice as many plays in NFL than when they were in college. I once again have raised my doubts about Vince Young and his understanding of the game. I don’t believe you can live on “broken” plays in the NFL. A player, to be successful in the NFL, has to demonstrate quickness and knowledge of the game. At this point, I believe Vince Young has shown the scouts that he is “average” in both. Teams considering selecting Vince Young high in the draft better evaluate this “disrespectful” test, because I believe it’s pretty important at the quarterback position. If I were a GM, I would list Young as the next Randle El and not the next Michael Vick.

Davis resigns at Indiana, ends 6-year tenure

The University of Indiana continues its instability since the departure of Bobby Knight. Mike Davis has announced that he will resign at the end of the season, ending a 6-year reign as the basketball coach for the Hoosiers. The University and Davis have worked out a smooth transition. The challenge for Indiana will be to lure Steve Alford away from a very successful Iowa basketball program. Randy Wittman’s name has also been mentioned.

I couldn’t disagree more!!!

Emmit Smith, the well liked and respected former running back from the Dallas Cowboys, is risking his reputation for an old teammate. Smith believes that Michael Irvin’s personal issues are being held against him for entry into the Pro Football Hall Of Fame. He is exactly right!

I’m not sure when the retired players started this theory that only what you do on the football field matters. I believe the Hall of Fame is for great players that were talented and respected football and what it stands for. I don’t believe using your money for drugs and crimes falls under that category. If Emmit is asking us to forgive Irvin, I’m all for it, but he shouldn’t be put in the same Hall with the likes of Jerry Rice. I’m a firm believer that Football is not just played between the lines. I know that my professional career isn’t just judged between the walls. I think I would be on the streets pretty fast for a felony or some type of assault charge. And, I wouldn’t have millions of dollars to fall back on. Recently, Michael Irvin found himself in another “wrong place, wrong time” situation, again pleading he was doing the right thing. The NFL forgave him and he’s back on T.V. I think Irvin should count his blessings and his money and hope “THE U” (Miami University) honors him, because if it was up to me, Pete Rose would get into baseball’s Hall of Fame before Michael got on the first step of football’s Hall of Fame.

Where’s the Love for Tressel?

I’m writing this article to start some dialog on college coaches. Today was national signing day, and all the talk was about Pete Carroll, Mack Brown, Charlie Weis, Urban Meyer, Bobby Bowden and Joe Pa(Joe Paterno). The Ohio State coach, Jim Tressel, continues to quietly recruit solid players both on and off the field. During his tenure at Ohio State, his rankings have been consistently near the top. The unassuming Tressel never gets the respect he deserves. The amount of players he puts in the NFL continues to increase. This year, his graduating class may have as many as 5 first round picks.

Bobby Bowden has trouble keeping his players out of jail, let alone getting drafted by the NFL. Charlie Weis and Urban Meyer have to prove they can actually consistently coach at a high level in the college ranks. And although I would rank him one of the best all time, Joe Paterno has one good year and we are already taking him back to the top.

The “Vince Young” less Mack Brown still has to prove to me he can win the big one without Vince. For the last 10 years, Texas hasn’t been able to get over the top and in my book, without Young, they will struggle to do it again.
This leaves me with Pete Carroll, who I believe deserves all the credit he receives. The Pac Ten may struggle defending the power of its conference; Southern Cal still wins them all. So again I say, where is the love for Tressel, you must have to speak up to be recognized.

Taylor a threat on and off the field

Sean Taylor continues to embarrass the Washington Redskins, the NFL and himself. First, his trial gets postponed, which allowed Taylor to participate in the playoffs. He honors this courtesy by spitting in the face of Tampa Bay’s Michael Pittman during the game. The state now has increased his maximum sentence to 46 years for threatening three people with a gun. This sounds very familiar to actions taken by his fellow Miami Hurricane, Ray Lewis. The NFL embarrassed themselves back then, by not only allowing Lewis to play, but honoring him with the MVP award in the Super Bowl. I believe the NFL needs to take a stand for actions on and off the field and suspend him for this type of activity. This is a great opportunity for the League to regain control and respect and sit Sean Taylor for action on and off the field.
