      Offseason Movement: The Indians traded for the do-it-all Mark DeRosa (formerly of the Cubs) and also added pitchers Kerry Wood, Carl Pavano and Matt Herges. Wood will be the closer and although he’s been pounded thus far in spring training, it would appear that Pavano will have a spot in the starting rotation.

      Top Prospect: Matt LaPorta, OF/1B
      Carlos Santana (not that Carlos Santana) definitely deserves mention here because he absolutely raked minor league pitching last year and has a ton of power potential at the catcher position. But all eyes will be on LaPorta after the Tribe acquired him last summer as part of the deal that sent CC Sabathia to Milwaukee. Some are down on his potential because he struggled in Double-A and the Venezuelan Winter League last year. But LaPorta still remains one of the best prospects in baseball and should be Cleveland’s long-term answer at either first base or in the outfield.

      Vick accused of illegally withdrawing $1.3 mil from pension plan

      Michael Vick is in more hot water as the Department of Labor is accusing him of illegally withdrawing more than $1.3 million from a pension plan he had to help play his criminal restitution after his conviction on dog-fighting charges.

      Michael VickThe department says Vick made a series of prohibited transfers from a pension plan sponsored by MV7, a celebrity marketing company owned by the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback. The department alleges that Vick violated his duties as trustee of a pension plan that covered nine current or former MV7 employees.

      “This action sends a message that the Labor Department will not tolerate the misuse of plan money and will take whatever steps necessary to recover the assets owed to eligible workers,” Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis said in a prepared statement.

      The department also accused two of Vick’s former financial advisers, Mary R. Wong and David A. Talbot, of participating in some of the transfers.

      The filing further complicates Vick’s bankruptcy case, which has gradually moved along in Newport News while Vick serves a 23-month prison term in the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan. The judge presiding over the bankruptcy case has ordered Vick to testify in person at next week’s hearing on confirmation of his Chapter 11 plan.

      The department says the plan assets were partially used to help pay the criminal restitution imposed on Vick after his federal dogfighting conspiracy conviction.

      I’ve never seen anyone blow through millions of dollars like this a-hole and have nothing to show for it.

      Torry Holt to visit Jaguars

      Former Rams’ wideout Torry Holt is done vacationing and is now ready to visit NFL teams, with his first stop coming Thursday in Jacksonville.

      To wit, league sources told the Post-Dispatch on Wednesday evening that Holt will be paying a free-agent visit to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday. Jacksonville is in dire need of receiving help.

      The team cut Jerry Porter and had no plans to re-sign free agent Reggie Williams. On March 16, the Jaguars released wide receiver Matt Jones following his arrest earlier this month on a probation violation stemming from drug charges last summer. Jones led Jacksonville with 65 catches for 761 yards last season.

      Holt has no reason to go to a team that can’t guarantee him a starting job because there are plenty of them out there. The Jags’ current starters are Mike Walker and Dennis Northcutt, so even though Holt has shown signs of slowing down, he would still be an immediate upgrade to that unit. Another team that should pick up the phone and dial Holt’s agent is the Chicago Bears, who currently have Devin Hester and Earl Bennett tabbed as their starting wideouts.

      2009 MLB Preview: #10 Los Angeles Dodgers

      Offseason Movement: The Dodgers were mostly quiet this offseason outside of adding Orlando Hudson, Guillermo Mota and Randy Wolf. Oh yeah, and after 4,958 days of painful back and forth negotiating, L.A. GM Ned Colleti was able to re-sign outfielder Manny Ramirez to a two-year deal.

      Top Prospect: James McDonald, RHP
      The Dodgers have a couple of top prospects, including OF/1B Andrew Lambo and INF Ivan DeJesus Jr., but McDonald is the closest to making the big league roster. The club has been in search for a fifth starter all spring and they could tab McDonald for the role if he continues to pitch well in exhibition games. McDonald doesn’t overpower hitters (his fastball only tops out at 92 mph), but he has a nasty curveball and his command is solid as well. It’ll be interesting to see if L.A. gives the 24-year old the fifth spot in the rotation or sends him down to Triple-A for more seasoning.

      Mangini wants Favre to attend Browns’ camp

      Eric Mangini is reaching out to Brett Favre in hopes that the future Hall of Fame quarterback will make an appearance at the Browns’ training camp this summer to help be an instructor to Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn.

      Mangini told the New York Daily News that he and Favre have been text messaging since they last saw each other December 29, the day the Jets fired Mangini and the day after Favre played his final NFL game.

      The two are discussing Favre joining Mangini at Browns camp this summer. Favre couldn’t run the practice team because he is still under contract with the Jets, but Mangini didn’t rule out Favre being a guest instructor for quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson.

      “I don’t think it would be anything formal,” Mangini told the newspaper. “It’s not like we are hiring him to run the scout team. I don’t think he would be interested in that. He would be more like a visitor. An open invite.”

      This is a flat out stupid idea. Why would Mangini, in his first year in Cleveland mind you, invite a media circus to spring training? Furthermore, when has Favre ever been known as a mentor? The guy has always walked to the beat of his own drum and I could be wrong, but I don’t think I ever heard Aaron Rodgers say Favre was a great inspiration to him in Green Bay.

      The idea sounds good; hey, bring in a future Hall of Famer to show Anderson and Quinn the ropes. But it seems highly unnecessary and it would no doubt create a distraction that Anderson, Quinn nor the Browns need in training camp. This just doesn’t make much sense and again, the media will try to blow this up to epic proportions once/if it happens.
