McNair left no will, wife to oversee estate

According to court documents, slain former NFL quarterback Steve McNair didn’t leave a will and therefore a judge in Nashville has ruled that his wife Mechelle will oversee his estate.

Davidson County Probate Judge Randy Kennedy granted Mechelle McNair’s request to administer the estate and gave her 60 days to file an inventory of her late husband’s assets. She says in court documents that she did not know her late husband’s worth, but documents contend it is “of sufficient size to be administered.”

Police say McNair was shot to death on July 4 by a girlfriend who later turned the gun on herself. Nashville police have ruled it a murder-suicide.

Mechelle McNair listed herself and her two sons, Tyler and Trenton McNair, as the heirs to the estate. McNair also has two other sons from a previous relationship.

Without knowing the full details of this situation, it’s not fair for me to comment on McNair’s financial situation. But I can’t help but feel happy that McNair’s wife and sons are now in control of his estate. Nothing will bring back their husband and father, but at least everyone is financially taken care of for the foreseeable future.

AskMen.com’s Top 10 Sports Movie Pep Talks

AskMen.com put together a ranking of the top 10 sports movie pep talks of all-time.

Here are the site’s top 3:

1. Kurt Russell as Herb Brooks in “Miracle”

2. Al Pacino as Tony D’Amato in “Any Given Sunday”

3. Gene Hackman as Norman Dale in “Hoosiers”

I love Russell’s speech in “Miracle” for the obvious reasons, but something about Pacino’s monologue in “Any Given Sunday” hits me hard every time I watch it. Maybe it’s because of the movie or because Pacino is one of the greatest actors to ever grace the big screen, but that “inches speech” is the best in my opinion. No actor can say the word “f**king” better than Pacino.

Broncos’ Marshall says he’ll be in camp

If you thought Brandon Marshall would give up $14,000 a day just because he’s a little ticked off at the Broncos well then you, my friend, are sadly mistaken. The disgruntled receiver said that he would be in attendance when the Broncos open training camp on July 27.

“It’s $14,000 a day if I miss. So I will be there. I’m not stupid.”

The last line in his comment is up for debate seeing as how he’s been in no less than eight off field incidents involving authorities since 2004, including situations involving domestic violence, DUIs and misdemeanor battery charges. He might not be stupid, but he’s a long ways away from being intelligent.

That said, at least this ends the debate of whether or not Marshall will be in camp come the end of the month. While his reasons (money, money, money, money, money – MON-AY!) for being in camp are completely self-absorbed, so were his reasons for potentially holding out too. He’s upset that he’s still playing on his rookie contract and while he is underpaid given his production to this point in his career, who could blame Denver for not wanting to pony up for a guy who could wind up in jail at any given time during the day?

Chances are, Marshall is going to make things messy for the Broncos in camp. He’ll openly bitch about his contract and his desire to be traded, and then the front office will have to decide whether or not to keep the distraction around, or try and trade him for some decent compensation. Either way, just because Marshall is reporting to camp, doesn’t mean that this situation has been resolved.

NASCAR’s Jeremy Mayfield tests positive for meth…again

NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield is having a rough go of things this season. He’s already tested positive once this year for methamphetamine and apparently NASCAR has caught him again. On top of that, it sounds like he has a real solid relationship with his stepmother.

The urine sample collected on July 6 “conclusively” showed that Mayfield had again used the addictive street drug, NASCAR’s lawyers wrote in the filing that urges a U.S. District Court judge in Charlotte to reconsider the temporary restraining order that lifted the 40-year-old driver’s suspension.

Wednesday’s filing also included an affidavit from Mayfield’s’ estranged stepmother, Lisa Mayfield. In the document, she alleged she was “personally aware” of his use of meth between 1998 and 2005 and that Jeremy Mayfield cooked up his own batch the drug before the sale of major ingredient for the drug, pseudoephedrine, was restricted.

Lisa Mayfield also recounted an incident in 1999 when she claimed to have witnessed Mayfield use the drug before a race at Darlington Raceway.

“I was concerned about his heavy use and talked to his father about it,” Lisa Mayfield said. “I saw Jeremy use methamphetamine by snorting it up his nose at least 30 times during the seven years I was around him.”

Mayfield denied those claims as well.

“I’m not even going to call that lady my stepmom,” Mayfield said. “She’s a very evil lady who can be bought.”

I don’t know whether he is or isn’t a meth head, but if he is and he’s denying it, that should raise a red flag to those around him that there’s a serious problem here. If he’s hooked on this stuff, then he needs professional help because chances are, he’s not going to kick the drug on his own. Forget your next NASCAR race – get some help.

Tiger shoots a 71 in opening round of British Open

If you were hoping Tiger Woods would bust out of the gates at the British Open, take an early lead and dominant the competition throughout the weekend your wish has not been granted.

Woods shot a 71 in the opening round of the British Open, which began this morning at 8:00 a.m. ET at Turnberry golf course in Scotland. That score is good for one over par and currently ranks him tied for 56th place, although more than half of the golfers have yet to take the course.

Tom Watson, a 59-year-old five-time Open champion, currently holds the lead after shooting a 65. That score gives him a five-under-par and also gives him a one stroke advantage over John Senden, Steve Stricker, Camilo Villegas, Stewart Cink and Mathew Goggin.

Tiger was a 9/4 favorite when play began today. Watson didn’t have odds, so he was part of The Field, which was 5/2 to win. Stricker and Villegas were 40/1, while Cink was 60/1.

Here’s the TV schedule for the rest of the British Open:
