Cowboys’ Roy Williams frustrated

Another Cowboys receiver is unhappy.

Following his one catch performance in last Sunday night’s 33-31 loss to the Giants, Dallas wideout Roy Williams is frustrated that he’s not being used like a No. 1 receiver.

From the Charlotte Observer:

Williams doesn’t deny being frustrated with his lack of involvement. He was only thrown to four times against the Giants.

“Yeah, it’s frustrating,” Williams said. “I feel like I’m a playmaker. I run my route and hopefully the ball will be there. If not, I move on to the next play, then move on to the next one.”

Williams said he was not criticizing quarterback Tony Romo and remains confident in Romo to lead the Cowboys and get him the ball.

Williams didn’t let his lack of involvement affect his play on the field. His down-field blocking keyed the 251-yard rushing effort against the Giants.

“That’s what was working for us,” he said. “There are going to be games like that.”

This doesn’t seem like it’s a big deal now, so I won’t try to spin the situation into something it’s not. But it is interesting that we’re only two games into a new season and already a Cowboy receiver is venting his frustration with his role in the offense.

Is Romo keying on certain guys or is Jason Garrett’s offense not doing enough to get the No. 1 receiver involved more? Owens complained about not getting more opportunities to make catches last year and everyone wrote it off as T.O. being T.O. It’ll be interesting to see if Williams’ complaints get louder and louder throughout the season.

A chat with Matt Serra

Bullz-Eye.com Fitness Editor Mike Furci got the opportunity to sit down with former Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter Matt “The Terror” Serra recently to pick his brain about what it’s like to star in the Ultimate Fighter series. Serra also gives a round-by-round breakdown of his assessment of the rematch between he and Matt Hughes.

Bullz-Eye: Is Matt there?

Matt Serra: Yeah, this is Matt.

BE: Hey Matt. This is Mike Furci from Bullz-Eye.com. How’s everything going?

MS: Everything is going great, everything is going great. After the fight, I’m spending some time with my family; I’m getting back in my schools. It’s going great.

BE: Oh, that’s awesome. I heard the Serra Academies are doing well.

MS: Yeah, I can’t complain. I have two schools here on Long Island. If anybody wanted to check them out it is mattserra.net. I tell you, you know I have a lot of students and they are all — it’s a good atmosphere, I have a great time training and it’s a good time. That’s where you’ll catch me after all my fights.

BE: Oh I bet.

MS: I’m there, I’m teaching and having a great time.

BE: Doing what you love to do.

MS: Yeah man, when I’m not fighting I am just teaching guys how to arm block and reverse, sit-ups, triangle chokes. It’s all good.

BE: Right. Can you give us a little history behind the start of the Serra Academies and a little bit about their growth over the last few years?

Freshman Barkley will start against Washington State

According to a report by the Los Angeles Times, freshman quarterback Matt Barkley will make his third career start on Saturday for the Trojans when USC hosts Washington State.

Barkley was sidelined last week because of a bone bruise in his right shoulder, an injury suffered against Ohio State on Sept. 12. He warmed up but was unable to get loose Saturday during the fourth quarter of the Trojans’ 16-13 loss at Seattle, a defeat that might have crippled their chances of making a run for the Bowl Championship Series title.

Barkley has practiced this week, but he said Tuesday that he continued to feel pain and was unable to throw with full velocity. Regardless of his condition, he maintained that he planned to start against Washington State.

The timing of Wednesday’s decision, Carroll said, “has nothing to do with last week.”

“I think it’s best for us to get focused in on what we’re doing because Matt’s going to make it,” he said. “So there’s no reason to wait.”

Sorry, but this decision has everything to do with last week. Barkley beat Ohio State in Columbus two weeks ago, while Corp struggled to do anything positive last week in a loss to Washington. With Cal emerging as the new favorites to win the Pac-10, Carroll and USC can’t afford to lose another game, which is exactly why Barkley will start on Saturday.

Hopefully in his haste not to lose another game, Carroll isn’t starting an injured quarterback. Barkley is too valuable to the USC program to lose for a significant amount of time and he shouldn’t risk further injury.

That said, if he’s ready to go, then there’s no question that Barkley should start over Corp based on what the two quarterbacks have shown this season.

Giants’ Sanchez needs knee surgery

According to a report by MLB.com, Giants’ second baseman Freddy Sanchez needs to have surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee.

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy, however, is hopeful the procedure can be put off until the offseason and that the second baseman can still contribute to the team’s playoff drive after a few days of therapy.

“We’ll wait and see what happens in these next two games,” Bochy said prior to the finale of a three-game series here with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

So the club isn’t yet shutting down Sanchez for the remainder of a season that has 11 games remaining, even though the Giants took the field Wednesday night trailing Colorado by five games in the National League Wild Card standings.

Sanchez, who suffered the injury taking an awkward step on the infield in the bottom of the first inning of Monday night’s game, checked into the clubhouse Wednesday afternoon “limping pretty good,” according to Bochy.

Sanchez is hitting .284 since joining the Giants, but he certainly hasn’t made the impact that the club had hoped when they acquired the second baseman from Pittsburgh in exchange for Tim Alderson, one of the club’s top pitching prospects.

Sanchez just hasn’t been healthy enough to have an impact for the fading Giants, who are four games back of the Rockies in the NL Wild Card standings and essentially need a miracle over the next two weeks to make the postseason.

There has to be some within the Giants’ organization that are second guessing the trade for Sanchez, although hindsight is always 20/20.
