      Iowa loses its top running back

      No. 7 Iowa was dealt a blow on Tuesday when head coach Kirk Ferentz announced that top running back Adam Robinson will miss the rest of the regular season due to an ankle injury.

      From SI.com:

      Coach Kirk Ferentz said he was hopeful Robinson can return for a bowl game after suffering a high left ankle sprain in last week’s 15-13 win at Michigan State. The back said he rolled the ankle late in the game.

      The loss of Robinson, who rushed for 629 yards and five TDs, shrinks what’s already a slim margin of error for the 7th-ranked Hawkeyes, who rank 86th in the nation in scoring offense.

      Iowa (8-0, 4-0 Big Ten) will replace Robinson with fellow freshman Brandon Wegher, who has for 321 yards in relief of Robinson this season. Iowa hosts Indiana on Saturday.

      The Hawkeyes are big on Wegher, although he hasn’t flashed the top end speed that he did coming out of high school. But now that he’s going to be the primary back, he’ll have the opportunity to get into a groove and pick up the tempo of the game. He certainly has a ton of talent, and Iowa will be relying on him heavily the next two months.

      This is a huge blow, but Iowa has overcome adversity and battled all season.

      With LJ’s future in doubt, Chiefs to lean on Charles

      NFL.com reports that the Chiefs have ordered Larry Johnson to refrain from team activities in the wake of comments he made on his Twitter page about head coach Todd Haley. Johnson also used a homophonic slur to degrade another Twitter user that had commented on LJ’s page.

      On Tuesday, Haley suggested that Jamaal Charles has earned a larger role in Kansas City’s offense and could take over the fulltime tailback duties while the team investigates Johnson’s situation. The 22-year old back has flashed big play potential throughout his short career, but he’s had problems holding onto the ball and has been an inconsistent performer.

      It appears that the writing is on the wall for Johnson. While Charles isn’t the answer to the Chiefs’ rushing woes (it doesn’t matter who takes the carries if KC’s O-line doesn’t start opening running lanes), he’s worth taking a shot on while Johnson is busy being a malcontent off the field. The cap hit might be too great for the Chiefs to outright release LJ but given his age and production (or lack thereof), don’t rule out the possibility.

      Haley has stood by Johnson all season, but it appears that he has had enough. The Chiefs are off this week, but one would imagine that Haley will prep Charles for the fulltime role and depending on what happens with LJ in the next two weeks, Charles will get the opportunity to start at Jacksonville in Week 9.

      2009 College Football Week 9 Point Spreads

      Along with a complete list of odds, here are a couple previews on this week’s marquee matchups in college football.

      Georgia vs. No. 1 Florida, 3:30PM ET
      The event formerly known as “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party,” (back before the stiffs zapped all the fun out of it) has lost some luster due to Georgia’s inconsistent play this season. But this is certainly a game to keep an eye on because it has major SEC Championship ramifications for a Florida team that has lacked offensive explosion all season. The Gators’ defense has been outstanding, but Tim Tebow and the offense continue to struggle and some pundits are just waiting for Urban Meyer’s team to slip up. Will the Bulldogs pull off an upset this Saturday in Jacksonville?
      Odds: Florida –15.5.

      No. 3 Texas at No. 14 Oklahoma State, 8:00PM ET
      If the Longhorns want to turn voters’ heads, then they need a great showing this weekend in Stillwater. Since their loss to Houston, Oklahoma State has rattled off five straight in impressive fashion. Both teams are looking at this contest as a huge statement game and the winner could help themselves in the polls. Alabama is idle this week, so Colt McCoy and Texas might be able to leapfrog the Crimson Tide with an impressive road victory.
      Odds: Texas –9.5.

      No. 5 USC at No. 10 Oregon, 8:00PM ET
      While Arizona and Stanford might have a say in things later on, the Pac-10 is essentially on the line this Saturday in Eugene. Since giving an embarrassing effort in a loss to Boise State in the opener, the Ducks have rattled off six straight and are playing with loads of confidence. USC, on the other hand, has won four straight but Notre Dame nearly came back to tie the game in the fourth two weeks ago and Oregon State proved to be a tougher challenge then the Trojans expected. USC’s defense looked vulnerable last week, surrendering nearly 500 yards of total offense and 36 points. Can Oregon take advantage of that at home and stay undefeated in the Pac-10?
      Odds: USC –3.5.

      Man charged in murder of Connecticut player

      According to a report by SI.com, police have charged a man with the murder of Connecticut football player Jasper Howard.

      Two others also were charged in the fight that led to the stabbing death of 20-year-old Jasper Howard.

      Police say 21-year-old John William Lomax III is charged with murder and conspiracy to commit assault.

      Police say they also charged 20-year-old Hakim Muhammad, of Bloomfield, with conspiracy to commit assault, and 21-year-old Jamal Todd with pulling a fire alarm that emptied the Oct. 18 dance, triggering the fight.

      Here’s hoping they have the right people responsible and that they’re prosecuted for their actions.

      Titans’ owner ready for Vince Young

      Titans’ owner Bud Adams is getting even more vocal about his desire to see quarterback Vince Young start over Kerry Collins this week.

      From the Nashville Tennessean:

      In the past week the 86-year-old owner has been more direct, according to sources familiar with the situation. Adams wants the change now.

      Adams and Fisher could not be reached for comment on Monday night.

      At his weekly press conference earlier in the day, Fisher was non-committal when asked if Kerry Collins or Young would start this week, citing competitive reasons. It was the first time this season Fisher did not immediately say Collins would remain the starter.
      This isn’t really anything new because Adams went on record a week ago that he’d like to see Young play. But if the report is true and Adams is getting more direct, the situation is starting to become interesting because it could play into whether or not Fisher is retained at the end of the year.

      One would imagine that Fisher is on the hot seat after the Titans’ brutal start. If the owner wants to see more of Young, but Fisher sticks with Collins and the team continues to lose, will the long-time head coach been shown the door for not granting the owner’s wishes.

      Young isn’t the answer, but he could at least provide a spark for a lifeless team. At this point, Fisher should be willing to try just about anything to earn a win and if that means starting Young, then so be it.
