Tebow has rough Senior Bowl week

Tim Tebow just blew his first opportunity to prove to doubters that he can be a quarterback at the next level.

After botching several snaps and struggling with his accuracy during practice this week, Tebow fumbled twice and finished 8-of-12 for just 50 yards in the Senior Bowl on Saturday. Worse yet, his scrambling ability (his forte) was neutralized by Jim Schwartz’s defense.

Granted, Tebow was battling strep throat, so he may deserve a mulligan for his performance this week. But sick or not, the same doubts that scouts have had about him were on full display all week. His mechanics are poor, his wind up motion is troubling and he continues to struggle with his accuracy.

Tebow still has the scouting combine and individual workouts to improve his draft stock, but it was clear this week that he’s a massive project at quarterback.

T.O. indicates that he’s as good as Jerry Rice

If Terrell Owens had the same quarterbacks as Jerry Rice did, then he would be closing in on Rice’s receiving records. At least that’s what T.O. says.

From USA Today:

“I know hands-down I’d be close to Jerry Rice’s records if I had been with quality quarterbacks like he had. He had Joe Montana and he finished with Steve Young. That wasn’t a dropoff.

“Say I had been with a guy like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning or Drew Brees all of my career. Are you kidding me?”

Owens was with a good quarterback in Philadelphia but he got himself ran out of town. Jeff Garcia and Tony Romo aren’t half bad either, although T.O. would have you belief that he’s been playing with Henry Burris and Joey Harrington his entire career.

Nobody has ever questioned T.O.’s talent, but what chaps people’s hides is that he’s always the one making these types of comments. He always has to remind everyone that he’s at a disadvantage for whatever reason, whether it’s the quarterback, the playcalling or the lack of touches that hold him back. He’ll never be the type of player that looks in the mirror and finds fault in himself, even though he drops more passes than anyone.

McKinnie kicked off NFC Pro Bowl roster

Vikings left tackle Bryant McKinnie has been dismissed from the NFC Pro Bowl squad after missing four of five practices and attending just one team meeting. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, McKinnie also missed the team photo.

McKinnie has been Tweetering (or is it Tweeting? Ah screw it…) all week about enjoying the Miami nightlife, so apparently he has partied his way out of Miami. Giants’ offensive lineman David Diehl will likely have to play the entire game now because the NFC only had three tackles on its roster.

If McKinnie wasn’t going to take the game seriously, then he should have forfeited his game check like some of the other NFL players who have bowed out of the Pro Bowl. There was no sense in him taking up a roster spot just so he could be an idiot for a week. He could have done that on his own time.

One would have thought that since this was his first Pro Bowl that he would have taken the honor seriously. But instead he embarrassed himself and the Vikings by being kicked off the team.

Troy Smith a Brown?

Profootballtalk.com reports that Ravens’ QB Troy Smith would love to play for the Browns next season.

“There is no doubt about it,” Smith said regarding his desire to play for the Browns. “It has always been a childhood dream of mine. It’s funny how we always talk about Cleveland. That’s the first thing that comes to mind with anything I do whether I get a chance to come home and be a part of that organization or not. You know, I would love to get that chance if that opportunity comes up, but the political and right thing to say in this situation is that I would love to be anywhere that would give me a chance. But, without a doubt, there would be no second guessing in my mind if I could come back home and be a part of something that I love.”

The Ravens already have their franchise quarterback in Joe Flacco, so it would make sense that Ozzie Newsome would be open to trading Smith. The question is whether or not Mike Holmgren views Smith as a fit for the West Coast Offense, assuming that system is installed in Cleveland.

Of course, Holmgren has to figure out what he’s going to do with Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson before he looks at players outside the franchise.

Bears interview Martz for O-coordinator job

According to the Chicago Sun Times, the Bears interviewed Mike Martz for their vacant offensive coordinator job on Friday.

Martz had spoken to Bears head coach Lovie Smith early in the process, but he finally got an interview today. Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Rogers is believed to have made a strong impression on the Bears during an interview Thursday, and he or Martz could compel the Bears not to wait for any assistants on the two Super Bowl teams.

As for Martz, he and Smith have plenty of history; Smith was Martz’a defensive coordinator in St. Louis. But Martz will have to prove several things today. First, that he isn’t going to ignore running the ball, which is essential in Chicago yet goes against the grain of his track record. And second, that he can co-exist with his players and coaches, particularly assistant head coach Rod Marinelli, who fired Martz when he was the head coach of the Detroit Lions.

This would be one desperate party hiring another desperate party. The Bears have had zero luck in trying to replace Ron Turner (whom they fired earlier this month) and Martz wants to get back into coaching after a one-year hiatus as an analyst on the NFL Network’s “The Head Coaches.”

What’s interesting about this potential marriage is that Martz criticized Jay Cutler earlier this season after the Bears’ QB was nonchalant in a post game presser after he threw four interceptions in a Week 1 loss to the Packers.

“He just doesn’t get it. He doesn’t understand that he represents a great head coach and the rest of those players on that team … somebody needs to talk to him,” said Martz.

As a fan, I would love to see how Martz and Cutler would interact. It would either be an offensive explosion every week or be a complete and utter disaster. Either way, sign me up for that scenario.
