Rams deny talking to Eagles about McNabb

Despite a report by St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Bryan Burwell that stated the team had “intense internal conversations” with the Eagles about trading for Donovan McNabb, ESPN’s Adam Schefter writes via his Twitter page that the Rams are not going after the veteran QB.

Are Rams really going after McNabb? … They are not. They haven’t had a single conversation with Rams regarding McNabb.

It wouldn’t make sense for the Rams to acquire McNabb. Do they need a quarterback? Absolutely – without question. But they’re not one Donovan McNabb away from competing and they would presumably have to give up at least their second round pick, if not a conditional pick as well.

Michael Vick would make more sense for the Rams, because he would come cheap and could be a boom or bust type of player.

Regardless, the Eagles seemed destined to hang on to McNabb this season anyway. At this point, it looks like he’ll be in Philadelphia for at least one more year and won’t be involved in any trade this offseason.

Vick wants to play for the Panthers…because he likes their uniforms.

Good to see Michael Vick still has his priorities in order. (Fast forward to about the 7:40 mark.)

Let’s review:

“If I could play for any team in the league, it would probably be two teams, but if I had to pick one, it would probably be the Carolina Panthers.”

Why, Mike?

“Well, you know, it’s close to home. I like the uniforms. You get to play against Atlanta twice a year. Ain’t nothing better than playing against your former team, right? So, yeah, that would be a good look, it would be a good look.”

Oh, you mean the same team that was loyal to you and you screwed over by operating an illegal dog-fighting operation in your spare time? The same Falcons team that you admitted to not giving it your all for and overall being lazy? Stay classy, Mike.

And I don’t care if he was joking or only half serious, but him saying that he wants to play for the Panthers because he likes their uniforms is painstakingly stupid. I’m well aware that I might be going overboard with this and I’ll admit that I’m bitter towards this pile, but may he go to Carolina and may Curtis Lofton give him the beating of a lifetime for 120 minutes twice a year.

Rams leaning towards Gerald McCoy at No. 1?

John Czarnecki of FOXSports.com writes that Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo would take Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy with the No. 1 overall pick if the draft were today.

If the draft was today, the Rams would select Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy because he is the player that head coach Steve Spagnuolo likes better. Fortunately for Rams fans who want a quarterback after passing on Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez the past two Aprils, the team has seven weeks to change Spags’ mind. McCoy’s OU teammate, quarterback Sam Bradford, plans to throw and show off his surgically repaired right shoulder on March 25. A year ago, Bradford was the consensus top quarterback, ahead of Matthew Stafford, but he opted to return to play college football.

Right, and last week the Rams were all set on Sam Bradford. Next week, someone will report that the Rams are desperate to trade out of the top spot and the week after that they’ll be set on Dez Bryant.

I’m not ragging on Czarnecki’s report, but it is that time of year (i.e. the time of year in which all information must be taken with a grain of salt). There’s a very good chance that the Rams don’t know who they’re going to take and why should they? The draft is still roughly two months away and I’m sure Spagnuolo and GM Billy Devaney are pondering all of their options – as they should.

2010 Fantasy Baseball Rankings: First Basemen

All 2010 Fantasy Articles | 2010 Position Rankings

Before the onset of a draft, many fantasy owners believe that they better select their first baseman in one of the first three rounds. If they don’t land Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera, Mark Teixeira or Ryan Howard early, then their entire draft could be ruined.

There’s certainly nothing wrong in subscribing to this theory. Making first base a top priority is a wise decision given the production you’ll get across the board from someone like Cabrera, Teixeira and of course, Pujols. That said, there are many owners that don’t mind waiting to address first base, instead choosing to stockpile players at more scarce fantasy positions. That’s not a bad way to go either, especially if other owners are focusing on first base in the first couple rounds.

We don’t need to re-hash how good guys like Pujols and Fielder are. Instead, here are seven first basemen that you can nab in the middle rounds if you choose to address other positions early. You won’t get the same out-of-this-world numbers that you would from a Pujols, Fielder or Cabrera from these seven, but chances are you’ll be quite satisfied by your first base production by the end of the season.

Mark Reynolds, Diamondbacks
We don’t have to sell you on Reynolds given his breakout 2009 campaign. He hit 44 dingers and drove in 102 runs while hitting .260 last year and while he may not duplicate those numbers, if he keeps his steals up (he swiped 24 bags last season) then he’ll be extremely valuable. You’d be in good shape if you grabbed premier players at other positions and then nabbed Reynolds after the top seven or eight first basemen come off the board.

Tiger out of therapy, getting back into shape

ESPN.com is reporting that Tiger Woods is back home after undergoing a week of family counseling in Arizona. Woods’ next mission is to get back into shape so that he can return to golf.

Woods returned to his home near Orlando on Saturday and has been hitting balls on the range at Isleworth, not far from where he ran his SUV into a tree in a middle-of-the-night accident on Nov. 27 that set off revelations of his extramarital affairs.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because only Woods is authorized to release information about his schedule, said there is still no timetable for golf’s No. 1 player to return to competition.

News of him getting back into a routine is sure to begin speculation when he might return to the PGA Tour. Woods announced on Dec. 4 that he was taking an “indefinite break” to try to salvage his marriage.

Does anyone else smell an April 8th return for Tiger? That’s the first day of the Masters and while I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of him playing in a smaller tournament or two before then, I’m willing to bet that Tiger would want to create some good publicity for himself on a big stage.

Of course, no matter what tournament he decides to play in, his return will be front-page news. But what better way for the PGA to draw viewers than to have Tiger make his return the week of the Masters? It’s all too perfect.
