After ‘Bama squeaked by LSU in overtime and Tech ran ramped over Oklahoma State on Saturday night, the hottest debate in college football centers around which team deserves to be ranked No. 1. The polls say Crimson Tide, but many pundits and college football fans alike believe the Red Raiders are easily the best team in the nation.
It’s hard to say unequivocally that neither team deserves to be ranked in the top spot. ‘Bama has disposed of some of the best teams in the SEC including LSU and Georgia, but college football enthusiasts will be quick to note that the conference is down on a whole this year so those victories don’t hold as much water.
Conversely, Tech has run through the best the Big 12 has to offer including Texas and Oklahoma State, and still has to face Oklahoma two weeks from now. And unlike the SEC, nobody is saying the Big 12 is down this year.
Assuming Tech gets past the Sooners (which won’t be a picnic by any means) and ‘Bama holds off Mississippi State and Auburn, than the battle for No. 1 will most likely come down to championship weekend. If the Tide beat Florida, than it’s hard to say ‘Bama should be ranked any lower than the top spot, especially considering Tech’s opponent in the Big 12 championship won’t be as tough. (I think we can essentially say that Oklahoma will be Tech’s Big 12 Championship Game.)
Don’t count out the Gators either. They’re playing about as well as any team in the nation right now and are making a case for being ranked No. 1 themselves. This is going to be a great finish to a wild college football season.
In honor of the New England Patriots’ cheerleader that was recently fired because she drew pictures of dongs and swastikas on her drunk, passed out friend’s face, FanIQ.com ranks the top 10 cheerleading scandals of all time.
#2: Carolina Panthers, Bathroom Sexscapades
This was the biggest NFL cheerleader scandal yet. Panthers cheerleaders Angela Ellen Keathley and Renee Thomas were in a bathroom stall together at a nightclub in Florida, when other patrons started getting rowdy because the girls had been in there entirely too long. Before long, a fight broke out. What might two young ladies be doing for so long in a bathroom stall together? According to witnesses, they were having sex. The ladies were subsequently dropped from the team. The ladies’ mug shots, and then pics of better days, when they were still cheerleaders:
#1 Courtney Simpson, Arizona State
This cheerleading scandal puts all the other ones to shame. Courtney Simpson, who grew up in a devout Mormon family, arrived at ASU in 2004 on a full academic scholarship and joined the cheerleading squad. However, by January, she wound up in the pornography industry – all while still at ASU. After her freshman year, she dropped out of ASU and moved to California but still wound up causing a huge controversy that involved ASU. That’s because she appeared in a porno wearing her ASU cheerleader uniform, and she was featured on the video’s box cover in the uniform as well. ASU looked into suing over the box cover, but her uniform was ultimately changed on the cover from ASU to USA. However, she does wear the ASU uniform in the actual movie. Simpson went on to appear in 250 pornos in under 2 years, so it’s easy to understand why ASU didn’t exactly want their name associated with her. Simpson is also unquestionably why the school came down so hard on the more recent ASU cheerleading scandal.
You know, you send you’re little girl off to college and you’re hoping she’s going to make dad proud being a star cheerleader and a solid student. Next thing you know she’s starring in 250 porno videos and dating some guy name Blade.
How bad does a team have to be if the opposing quarterback can go 7 of 27 for 72 yards, throw four interceptions and still win?
That opposing quarterback was Jake Delhomme in the Panthers’ 17-6 win over the Raiders on Sunday. He was worst than the numbers indicate, but while Oakland moved the ball decently, they couldn’t put it in the end zone. They did rush for 147 yards, but Andrew Walter threw two interceptions and Da Raiders turned the ball over a total of three times.
Of course, Walter’s 143 passing yards were still better than JaMarcus Russell’s high of 31 passing yards in last Sunday’s loss against the Falcons. While Walter was far from even below average, he probably was more productive than Russell (who dressed, but sat out due to an injury) would have been.
This could very well be the worst Raiders team in the history of the franchise and Al Davis has nobody to blame but himself. Davis wanted to have his thumb on Lane Kiffin when he was head coach and when Lane didn’t abide, Al saw to it that he was replaced. Well as it turns out, the Raiders were actually still playing hard under Kiffin because they saw direction. There is no direction under interim head coach Tom Cable (not all his fault) and the players are quitting.
Davis won’t, but he needs to step aside. He needs to get a strong front office person in charge to do all the day-to-day operations or else the Raiders will sink further and further into oblivion. Al thinks that flashy draft picks and high priced free agents are what build a winning football team and he’s sadly mistaken.

It appears that Colorado Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday won’t be heading to the St. Louis Cardinals in the foreseeable future as a potential deal between the two clubs is dead.
Mozeliak did not discuss specifics of his talks with the Rockies. However, Cardinals right fielder Ryan Ludwick remained a central name within the talks until their apparent breakdown. Misgivings existed within some quarters of the organization about committing multiple players for Holliday, who is eligible for free agency after next season while the arbitration-eligible Ludwick will make considerably less than Holliday’s $13.5 million in 2009.
Fox Sports reported Friday that the Rockies also sought outfielder Skip Schumaker and righthander Mitchell Boggs, who currently ranks as the organization’s top starting pitcher at Class AAA.
Mozeliak did not disclose what caused a breakdown in talks, but a source familiar with the process said the Cardinals GM balked at the player package rather than salary concerns.
The source also indicated he believed it possible the parties could resurrect talks in upcoming weeks.
This will be the main issue regarding Holliday this offseason. The Rockies want to get fair value for their best hitter, but teams trying to acquire him don’t want to sell the farm because they know Holliday might be a goner after the year because his contract is up. Eventually the Rockies might have to settle for less, which is a shame considering Holliday’s immense talent.
