The WEC puts on its next show tonight as WEC 50: Cruz vs. Benavidez 2 takes place from Las Vegas.
The card features a WEC Bantamweight Championship bout between Dominick Cruz and Joseph Benavidez along with a lightweight contest between Shane Roller and Anthony Pettis.
The main card airs live on Versus at 9PM ET. Here are my picks for the winners.
WEC Bantamweight Championship Bout – Dominick Cruz (15-1) vs. Joseph Benavidez (12-1): This fight is a rematch of a bout that happened a little over a year ago where Cruz won a unanimous decision. Now Cruz is the champion and Benavidez is the challenger and in this fight, look for Benavidez to get the nod. He underestimated Cruz and his wrestling in the first fight and anticipated more standup, which left him flat footed and allowed Cruz to control the fight. This time around, Benavidez should be able to dictate the pacing and placement of the fight. I like Benavidez to win by submission in round four.
WEC Lightweight Bout – Shane Roller (8-2) vs. Anthony Pettis (9-1): I really like what Pettis brings to the cage, but I think he leaves himself open to takedowns with his style, which plays right into Roller’s hands. Look for Roller to score a takedown and slowly work his way to a submission. Pettis can win if he lands a big strike, but I ultimately think Roller will win by submission late in round one.
WEC Featherweight Bout – Cub Swanson (14-3) vs. Chad Mendes (7-0): Mendes is on the rise in the division, but this is his toughest fight to date. Swanson is in need of this win to get himself back into contention for the title. I think this will be a 15-minute war where the youngster Mendes will find a way to win with his wrestling. Swanson is strong, but I think Mendes might be a little stronger, and that will be the difference in the fight.
WEC Bantamweight Bout – Scott Jorgensen (10-3) vs. Brad Pickett (20-4): Jorgensen is looking to earn a title shot with an impressive performance and in this fight, I like him to win by decision due to superior strength and better striking than Pickett. Pickett is a tough guy and a scrapper, but I look for Jorgensen to outclass him in this bout.
WEC Lightweight Bout – Bart Palaszewski (33-13) vs. Zack Micklewright (9-1): Palaszewski is a veteran fighter that has had ups and downs with his career while Micklewright is a bit of an unknown to the WEC. This is just Micklewright’s second fight in the organization and I think he won’t be able to handle the strength and experience that Palaszewski has. Look for Bart to pull off a submission in the second round.
