Jim Calhoun dresses down a reporter
Mental note: Don’t question Jim Calhoun about his salary.
I’ve never been a big Jim Calhoun fan, though there is no doubt that he’s a great coach. My problem with him is the faces that he makes on the sideline. Trivial stuff, I know.
It’s funny how his demeanor changes as he realizes that the reporter is seriously questioning his salary. He starts off with a joke — “not a penny back” — and then you can literally see him get angry as the reporter continues.
He has a point. He’s essentially the CEO of the Connecticut basketball program, which has been one of the most successful programs in the country over the years. Yes, the economy is in the crapper and technically he’s a state employee. But to the University of Connecticut, he’s worth every dime.
This is the United States. We don’t begrudge anyone for making a ton of money if they are good at what they do.

I love the part when the reporter goes, “If you guys covered this stuff I wouldn’t have to,” which was obviously directed at the rest of the media members, who then start berating him as well.
Good stuff.
“This is the United States. We don’t begrudge anyone for making a ton of money if they are good at what they do.”
We don’t? What about every single player on the Yankees?
We begrudge the Yankees as a team. As a whole, they get paid more than anyone and aren’t very good at what they do, at least not in the last few years.
If you aren’t good at what you do and you get paid a ton of money, we will criticize. Now that’s the American way.
Yes, but you could make the argument that CC Sabathia is among the top five pitchers in the game, but yet he is a bad guy for making so much money.
Either way, this argument could go on forever. The real point is that the college players *supposedly* get no money from UConn while Calhoun gets $1.6M. He’s bragging about what he makes off the sweat and effort of his players.
Regardless, I love the site and thanks for checking mine out as well.
I wouldn’t begrudge one of the top five pitchers in baseball from making a top five salary. If you are great at what you do and you generate a lot of revenue because of your skills, you deserve to get paid.
As for Calhoun, it’s not up to him whether or not college players are paid. He is one of the top coaches in the country and if UConn didn’t pay him that salary, someone else would. That’s his market value.
And you said he’s “bragging” — he did come off as kind of a dick, but I don’t think he was trying to boast about how rich he is. I think he was being a smartass to a guy that he thought was asking a smartass question. He’s probably out of touch with the struggles going on across the country right now, but he’s one of many that are living in their own little worlds.
