      Brad Childress concerned about Adrian Peterson

      Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress is concerned about his star running back. 2007 Rookie of the Year Adrian Peterson was held out of Thursday’s practice because of a hamstring injury.

      Adrian Peterson“He didn’t participate today so that probably says what it says,” Childress said. “DNP. He was limited [Wednesday]. It’s a concern. Your legs are your legs. We’ll just see how he comes out by the time we get to Sunday.”

      Peterson said earlier in the day that his hamstring is sore. He felt it tighten up on a run late in the fourth quarter. He said he hopes to be ready to play Sunday.

      The Panthers (Minnesota’s opponent on Sunday) have to be licking their chops. Chester Taylor is a solid backup, but he certainly doesn’t bring what Peterson brings to the field. Plus, the ageless one Gus Frerotte is starting at quarterback and the Vikings’ secondary looks brutal again this year. Good time for WR Steve Smith to be coming off a suspension.

      I know this will come back to bite me in the ass, but how good does Carolina look getting 3.5 points as a road underdog?

      Update: Peterson practiced Friday and is expected to play Sunday.

      Week 3 NFL Primer

      Aaron RodgersSunday’s Best: Cowboys (2-0) at Packers (2-0) 8:15 PM ET NBC
      General NFL fans and fantasy football owners alike are pumped for this Sunday Night Football matchup. The home team generally has the upper hand, with the host going 14-2 in the last 27 years of this underrated rivalry. Before becoming a starter this season, Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers only saw significant playing time one other time in his career – last year in a regular season loss to the Cowboys after Brett Favre was injured following two interceptions. Rodgers did well, too, completing 18 of 26 passes and tossing one touchdown. The Dallas defense will be well prepared for Rodgers this time, although the Cowboys are coming off a short week after beating the Eagles on Monday night.

      Upset Watch: Saints (1-1) at Broncos (2-0) 4:05 PM ET FOX
      If there’s one thing the NFL has taught fans over the years is to expect the unexpected. After two weeks, the Broncos look like world-beaters and after losing last week in Washington, the Saints appear to be vulnerable. But Denver’s defense didn’t play well in the second half last week and even without WR Marques Colston, New Orleans has more than enough offensive weapons to make things interesting this weekend in Denver. The Broncos are coming off an emotionally draining win last Sunday against San Diego, not to mention an emotionally draining week having to answer questions about Ed Hochuli’s blown call. Could the pissed off Saints be catching Denver at the right time?

      Ben RoethlisbergerIntriguing Matchup: Steelers (2-0) at Eagles (1-1), 4:15 PM ET CBS
      If it weren’t for the mega matchup in Green Bay on Sunday night, the Steelers-Eagles game Sunday evening would be the best of the Week 3 schedule. Pittsburgh has looked very good in its two victories, but questions remain about the health status of QB Ben Roethlisberger, who is dealing with a bad shoulder (although head coach Mike Tomlin says Big Ben’s shoulder isn’t separated). Philadelphia will be coming off a short week after playing on Monday night, but the Eagles are always tough to beat at home. Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook will also look to bounce back after fumbling away an opportunity to beat the Cowboys. This should be a physical game between two very good teams.

      Other Notable Games:
      Jaguars at Colts, 4:15 PM ET CBS
      Jacksonville’s offensive line is incredibly beat up, which hasn’t bode well for the usually-explosive Jag running game. But Indy lost its best run-defender in Bob Sanders for 4-6 weeks and the Vikes’ Adrian Peterson ran wild on them last Sunday. Could the Jaguars really start the season 0-3? Could the Colts really start 1-2? Neither team looks like the potential Super Bowl contenders everyone thought they would be entering the season.

      Panthers at Vikings, 1 PM ET FOX
      The Vikings are looking for their first win of the season while the Panthers are looking to gain even more of an edge in the NFC South. Can Carolina keep Adrian Peterson in check? Will Steve Smith take advantage of a weak Minnesota secondary in his first action of the season after serving a two game suspension?

      Cardinals at Redskins, 1 PM ET FOX
      Usually this game would be a bore-fest, but Arizona is 2-0 and Washington might have gotten on track after beating the Saints last Sunday. The Cardinals could open up a decent size lead in the NFC West with a victory.

      Bush League TV.com put together a list of the best and worst MLB players of all time for all 30 baseball teams.

      Boston Red Sox
      Dustin Pedroia2008 BEST PLAYER: Dustin Pedroia
      Pure hustle. This tiny kid has won over RED SOX nation with his gutsy, balls-out play. He should never have to buy a beer in the Northeast US again. Not to mention boatloads of p—y.
      2008 WORST PLAYER: Mike Timlin
      Need a lead blown in the 7th? Mike is your man! He has lots of championship rings, which he’ll display on his middle finger at you while you call him a loser.
      ALL-TIME BEST PLAYER: Ted Williams
      The greatest pure hitter in baseball. Would have set many records and probably led the Red Sox to some titles if it wasn’t for a pesky little thing known as World War 2… He’s so damn good he’s in the Fishing Hall of Fame too.
      *ALL-TIME WORST PLAYER: Eric Gagne
      The French-Canadian closer was deadly as a Dodger, got hurt, stunk as a Texas Ranger and then stunk to HIGH HELL as a Red Sock. Boston couldn’t get rid of him fast enough…not sure why he’s even in the league anymore.
      HONORABLE MENTION: Dave Roberts
      His stolen base in Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS made the greatest series comeback possible.

      New York Yankees
      *2008 BEST PLAYER: Jason Giambi
      He may be sorry about taking steroids, but he will NEVER apologize for that moustache.
      2008 WORST PLAYER: Johnny Damon
      America’s favorite traitor phoned it in and came up lame again. One of the key reasons the Yankees aren’t in the post-season for the first time since Jesus was seven.
      ALL-TIME BEST PLAYER: Babe Ruth
      It’s not known ans DiMaggio’s Pad or Mickey Mantle’s Place…it’s the House that Ruth built. The best ever. Period.
      ALL-TIME WORST PLAYER: Jose Canseco
      Oh Steinbrenner, have you ever met a bloated past-prime HULK that you didn’t overpay?
      HONORABLE MENTION: Yogi Berra
      When you look at the old dude today it’s hard to imagine he ever played baseball. He looks like a mix between Yoda and your grandpa, except twice as huggable.
      HORRIBLE MENTION: Carl Pavano
      So far he’s made $2.2 million per start this year. Remember that when you see how bad the economy is on the news. He’s spent more time on the DL than Eddie Murphy. (Look it up.)

      Tampa Bay Rays
      Carlos Pena2008 BEST PLAYER: Carlos Pena
      It was almost Longoria until he got hurt down the stretch…but the smiling Cuban Pena’s 28 homers and 88 rbi’s (so far) have put the Rays at the top of the AL East.
      2008 WORST PLAYER: Jonny Gomes
      The Vanilla Ice look-alike is about the only disappointment on this overachieving team. He’s been hurt half the year, but he’s only batting .177 when healthy. One of those rare players that has helped his team by not playing on it.
      ALL-TIME BEST PLAYER: Scott Kazmir
      He’s young, he’s fearless, he’s strong and he has great stuff. It won’t be long before he’s the best player on a different team.
      *ALL-TIME WORST PLAYER: Jose Canseco
      He smacked 34 homers while hopped up on horse pills, hurt his back and wound up picking up a cheap championship ring with the Yankees. Not technically the worst player the Rays have had, but just a black-hole of a–holeness that invaded the clubhouse for a while.
      HONORABLE MENTION: Wade Boggs
      The great 3rd baseman played his last two years for the Rays and picked up his 3,000th hit at Tropicana Field.
      HORRIBLE MENTION: Hideo Nomo
      The leg kick wasn’t fooling anyone anymore in his last full year in MLB service. He’s still a god in Japan, he just can’t get a table at a Hooters in Florida.

      Ah, anytime someone gets the chance to make fun of Jose Canseco, I’m in.

      Colorado upsets No. 21 West Virginia in overtime

      Cody HawkinsThe West Virginia Mountaineers dropped out of the top 10 two weeks ago when they lost to East Carolina and will no doubt drop out of the top 25 entirely after losing to Colorado 17-14 in overtime Thursday night.

      On WVU’s first and only possession in overtime, senior kicker Pat McAfee missed a chip shot field goal from 23 yards out. The Buffs didn’t waste the opportunity to claim victory, driving the play to the Mountaineers’ 13-yard line in just four plays. On a 3rd and three from the 13, Aric Goodman booted a 25-yard field goal to give CU the victory.

      Pat White (19 carries, 149 yards, 2 TDs) and Noel Devine (26 carries, 133 yards) were excellent, but penalties, the lack of big plays in the passing game and poor clock management at the end of regulation killed the Mountaineers in the end. It also didn’t help that Bradley Starks badly under threw Jock Sanders on a trick play in the fourth quarter. Sanders could have waltzed into the end zone and with the way their defense had been playing in the second half, WVU probably could have walked away with a 21-14 victory.

      It was nevertheless a gritty performance by Colorado and more specially, freshman RB Rodney Stewart, who carried 28 times for 166 yards. He single handedly got the Buffs into field goal range to win the game in overtime. With Stewart and sophomore quarterback Cody Hawkins (179 yards, 2 TDs), Colorado is building a young, productive backfield.

      Tony Kornheiser isn’t racist, he’s just not as funny as he thinks he is

      I don’t know how many people caught this in the age of TiVo, but Tony Kornheiser gave a generic apology for something he said earlier during the Eagles/Cowboys Monday night broadcast.

      ESPN was celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, and Kornheiser, Mike Tirico and Ron Jaworski were listening to a replay of the ESPN Deportes announcer Alvaro Martin’s description of Felix Jones’s 98-yard kickoff return that put the Cowboys ahead, 13-6.

      “I took high school Spanish,” Kornheiser said, “and that either means ‘nobody is going to touch him’ or ‘could you pick up my dry cleaning in the morning?’ ”

      After Kornheiser conferred with the ESPN production team later in the game, he told viewers in the fourth quarter: “I said something before I shouldn’t have said. I apologize for it. Not my first mistake, undoubtedly won’t be my last, but a 100-percent apology.”

      SportsByBrooks is confused.

      So, is he saying the Latino announcer is picking up dry cleaning? Or doing the dry cleaning? Or is he just insinuating that the guy has dry cleaning that needs to be picked up by someone? But why would it be weird for a guy who speaks Spanish to be asking for that to be done in Spanish? And isn’t dry cleaning more stereotypically associated with a different ethnicity? Is there something wrong about a Latino guy saying this while watching an African-American guy run?

      Whatever it was, Kornheiser felt it was necessary (or was told it was necessary) to apologize for it. Maybe he’s just sorry for his dreadful shtick that’s continually weighing down the broadcast.

      I have a theory. Kornheiser was obviously trying to make a joke, and I believe it was supposed to be at his own expense (at his inability to speak Spanish). He was saying that he took high school Spanish and then he offered two translations to the Spanish broadcast. His joke probably wouldn’t have fell flat had he said the following:

      “I took high school Spanish and that either meant ‘Nobody is going to catch him’ or ‘The bathroom is in the back of the library.’ “

      Anyone who actually took high school Spanish (and there are a lot of us) probably would have found that funny since much of first- and second-year Spanish involves conversation about bathrooms (banos) and/or libraries (bibliotecas).

      The fact that he threw ‘dry cleaning’ into his spiel turned it into a possible joke on a stereotype, though no stereotype involving Latinos and dry cleaning exists (to my knowledge).
