Does Vince Young want out of Tennessee?

On Monday, Titans quarterback Vince Young told WMAR-TV in Baltimore that he wants a chance to play or he wants out of Tennessee.

From Rotoworld:

Young lost his starting job to Kerry Collins last year when he struggled horribly in new coordinator Mike Heimerdinger’s offense, then sprained his MCL in Week 1. “If them guys don’t want me to be in there, it’s time for me to make a career change,” he said. “I’m ready to play ball. If they’re not ready for me to play ball, then somebody is.” The Titans say V.Y. will compete in camp, but he’d have to outplay Collins by a huge margin to regain the position.

As a football fan, I can’t respect that. I can’t respect an athlete saying, ‘If my team doesn’t want me, then I’ll find someone else who will.’

How about competing for once? How about going out on the field and proving that you’re better than the guy you’re competing against?

See, that’s the trouble with athletes these days – they get everything handed to them. From the moment their talents are recognized as youths, everything is given to them and they rarely have to earn playing time. It’s no wonder we as a society like hearing about stories of players who were always told they weren’t good enough. It’s because those players had to work for everything they got and they never stop working, even when they’ve “made it.”

Young was a god at Texas, so when he got to the NFL he must have figured that everything would continue to be taken care of for him. And when shit hit the fan, what happened? He hid behind his fragile emotions instead of fighting to stay on the field.

The Titans want somebody who’ll fight for a win every week, which is why Kerry Collins will remain the starter. If Young wants his job back, he has to earn it and just based on his comments from the TV interview, I’m not sure he’s willing to work for it. He’d rather have the job handed back to him and be coddled for the rest of his career.

Granted, I didn’t see the interview so maybe I’m taking what he said out of context. But based on the quotes from him above, Young needs to grow a pair and challenge Collins for the right to play on Sundays instead of whining about how Tennessee might not want him. They gave him $58 million to be the starter – they want him to play. He just has to want it for himself.

Titans sign Ramsey – are they pushing Vince Young out?

The Titans recently signed journeyman quarterback Patrick Ramsey and one has to wonder what that means for Vince Young.

Dave Logan, play-by-play voice for the Broncos and a former receiver with the Browns and Broncos, said Ramsey’s arm strength is still there.

“I don’t know what the mind-set of the organization is, but I will tell you this: Patrick has enough talent to be better than a backup quarterback,” Logan said. “And that is what you look for in a backup quarterback, a guy who is going to handle the situation the right way, is going to be a team guy, is going to pull for the No. 1 guy, but is going to prepare himself and be ready every week just in case something happens. And he is going to push that No. 1 guy.

“In training camp they’ll see Ramsey has some ability. He certainly has the ability to be the No. 2 guy, there’s no question about that.”

Ramsey must be viewed as a contingency plan in case Young once again shows signs that he cannot be the Titans’ long-term answer at quarterback. Then again, we are talking about Patrick Ramsey here, and not a rookie. Kerry Collins can’t play forever and maybe the Titans are just trying to bread a little competition into the No. 2 spot. Either way, the move is interesting and again, one has to wonder what this means for Young’s future in Tennessee.

Fisher tells Collins he’ll start if he re-signs

Titans’ head coach Jeff Fisher told free agent-to-be Kerry Collins that if he re-signs with the team this offseason, he’ll be granted the starting quarterback job again.

Kerry CollinsWhen Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher broke the news to Kerry Collins last week that he was headed to the Pro Bowl, he also communicated directly to Collins that he indeed wants him back as his starting quarterback in 2009, a team source told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.

Fisher had made public remarks that Collins deserved to be the starter based on his performance this season, but a source said his private reaffirmation thrilled Collins, who has said he will retire if he does not get a contract as a starting quarterback.

Collins, who was voted as a Pro Bowl alternate and replaces Brett Favre on the AFC roster, is scheduled to become a free agent in March. Though Titans GM Mike Reinfeldt has had some philosophical contract discussions with Collins’ representatives, there has been no real negotiations as of yet.

If a contract is completed for Collins, it means former first-round draft pick Vince Young will have to cope with the disappointment of losing his job to the veteran. A team source said Young has promised to have a good attitude and work ethic this offseason.

Collins deserves the starting gig with the way he performed last season but this is damning news to Young, who has fallen so far so fast.

What do you do with VY now? Make him sit for another year and hope his confidence grows on the sidelines? Use him in special formations? Trade him?

The Titans can’t trade him because it’s not like Collins is the long-term answer. But the good news is that if they re-sign Collins, they’ll once again have a solid veteran leading their offense next year and Young only counts for $2.16 million against the cap in 2009. But after next season, that number goes up to $7.5 million in 2010 and $8.5 million in 2011. You don’t want to be paying that kind of money to a quarterback riding the pine.
