      Options for UFC on Versus 2

      Brett C. Jones of HeavyMMA.com lays out some fight options for UFC on Versus 2.

      Maybe UFC should call their Versus fight cards “UFC Presents: Jon Jones and the UFC Players.” On consecutive occasions on the newest home of the top MMA promotion in the world, Jones has been dominant to say the least. In Sunday’s main event, Jones defeated Vladimir Matyushenko, a 13-year veteran of the sport, faster than anyone ever has.

      Among the “players” supporting the dominant performance of Jones was almost equally dominant Takanori Gomi, who took the occasion of his fight against Tyson Griffin to prove that he is not washed up. Gomi became the first fighter to stop the near-contender and breathed life into his career, which many felt was no longer suited for the highest level of competition.

      Who might Gomi fight to re-affirm his status near the top of the lightweight division? Who might Jones, who refused to call anyone out after his victory, next victimize? What about Yushin Okami and Jake Ellenberger, who each one their respective fights? They all have options, and this is their breakdown.

      UFC 117 Conference Call with Anderson Silva & Chael Sonnen

      Heavy.com MMA writer Matt Brown chatted with Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen on a recent conference call as they prepare for UFC 117. Below is the interview.

      Not that this will come as any surprise, but Chael Sonnen was star of the UFC 117 conference call. Anderson Silva, well, he was full of “yes” and “no” answers. The champ seemed indifferent on the call and almost distracted. Sonnen, on the other hand, was full of gems and seemed quite intense. Just another example of the drastic difference in personalities of these two fighters. Highlights below…

      Sonnen: “Anderson has a lot of tools. I don’t see a major glaring weakness anywhere.”

      Sonnen: “I’m the toughest guy in the company. There’s never been a guy with earrings that can out tough me and he’s not going to be the first.”

      Sonnen “I’m a partner with the UFC and Anderson is an employee. That’s why all the questions are coming to me. I give a clear and coherant answer while he sits on a speakerphone in a car somewhere giving yes and no answers.”

      Sonnen: “I’m gonna be standing, he’s gonna be flat on his back.”

      Silva: “He can say what he wants to say.” – in response to Dana White saying he could cut the champ after another bad performance

      Sonnen: “I believe Vitor is in line next, but he’s not the guy I really want to fight. I have a guy in mind and I’ll challenge him on the night of the 7th.”

      Previewing the MMA in August

      E. Spencer Kyte of Heavy.com previewed the month of August in the MMA.

      After Brock Lesnar submitted Shane Carwin at UFC 116, the MMA world fell into a bit of a lull. The UFC was on their version of summer vacation, Strikeforce offered only last weekend’s Challengers Series event, and the real highlights of the remaining days were some overseas adventures from DREAM and Impact FC.

      As July winds down and August draws closer, here’s hoping you took the time to get some rest and get those family obligations ticked off the to-do list.

      Family camping trips need to be out of the way, your annoying cousin’s third wedding better be in the can, and the in-laws better not be expected any time soon. MMA’s summer vacation about to come to an end, and if you’re a fight fan, you don’t have much time for anything else.

      The jam-packed month starts promptly on August 1, as the UFC makes their return to Versus on August 1st. Universally regarded as one of the best prospects in the sport, Jon “Bones” Jones headlines his second consecutive Versus event, this time facing the experienced Vladimir Matyushenko. While some have called for Jones to be fast-tracked to championship contention, the crafty former IFL champion is another legitimate litmus test for the recently-turned 23-year-old.

      Tito Ortiz to take on Matt Hamill at UFC 121

      The guys at Heavy.com are reporting that Tito Ortiz will battle Matt Hamill at UFC 121.

      Tito Ortiz will face protege Matt Hamill at UFC 121 in Anaheim, Ca.

      MMAFighting.com was the first to report the possibility of the bout on Thursday, and Heavy.com confirmed the bout with sources close to the event on Thursday afternoon.

      Ortiz last entered the Octagon against Forrest Griffin last November, where he lost via decision. He has not won a fight since Oct. 2006. The former light heavyweight champion was scheduled to face Chuck Liddell at the end of the 11th season of The Ultimate Fighter, but a neck injury forced him to withdraw from the bout and undergo surgery.

      Hamill faced Keith Jardine in June, earning a majority decision. Ortiz is something of a mentor to Hamill, having coached him on The Ultimate Fighter. The pair remained close after the show concluded.

      UFC 121 is headlined by a heavyweight title clash between Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez.
