      Ole’ Miss shocks No. 4 Florida 31-30

      Jevon SneadIt’s officially upset week in college football. After No. 1 USC fell 27-21 to Oregon State Thursday night, another top 5 team was defeated on Saturday when Mississippi knocked off No. 4 Florida 31-30.

      After Florida RB Percy Harvin scored on a 15-yard touchdown run with just over three minutes remaining in the game to cut the Rebels’ lead to 31-30, Gators’ K Jonathan Phillips had an extra point blocked. Florida’s defense forced a punt, but Tim Tebow was stopped on 4th and 1 sneak attempt from the Ole Miss 32-yard line less than two minutes left to play, which allowed the Rebels to run the clock out after the change of possession.

      QB Jevan Snead threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead Ole Miss. Junior WR Shay Hodge also hauled in three passes for 133 yards and a touchdown.

      After USC lost on Thursday night, several pundits felt that Florida was the best team in the nation and would compete for a title. But this game proves how tough it is to come out of the SEC. Mississippi isn’t even one of the conference’s best, but as they proved Saturday, no team in the SEC is a pushover. To upset the No. 4 team in the nation is impressive. But to go into Gainesville and knock off the No. 4 team in the nation is unbelievable, especially considering Florida arguably has the best player in the nation in Tebow.

      Oregon State will just have to share the upset spotlight this week.

      Chase Daniel takes lead in Heisman race?

      Gene Menez of SI.com breaks down the Heisman race as college football enters Week 4 of the season.

      Last week: 23-of-28 passing, 405 yards, 4 TDs; 1 rush, 12 yards in a 69-17 victory over Nevada.
      Season: 65-of-90 passing, 973 yards, 10 TDs, 1 INT; 10 rushes, 58 yards.
      Heisman-o-meter: Daniel has been a regular on this list for three years, but he has never been No. 1 — until now. The Tigers’ triggerman has been mind-boggingly productive in his first three games as the Missouri offense has rolled. (In the last two he has played just four quarters total and has seven touchdowns against six incompletions.) How he plays in the Tigers’ tough October stretch (at Nebraska, Oklahoma State, at Texas, Colorado) will go a long way in determining if he stays at No. 1.
      Up next: Saturday vs. Buffalo.

      2. Sam Bradford, Oklahoma, QB, Soph.
      Last week: 18-of-21 passing, 304 yards, 5 TDs; 1 rush, 1 yard, 1 TD in a 55-14 victory at Washington.
      Season: 64-of-81 passing, 882 yards, 12 TDs, 2 INTs; 4 rushes, 4 yards, 1 TD.
      Heisman-o-meter: In other Big 12 news, the Sooners have the conference’s — and country’s — No. 2 candidate for the stiff-armed statuette. Bradford plays so smoothly when he’s rolling out of the pocket and hitting receivers on the run, and he has Oklahoma’s offense humming. The task of separating Daniel and Bradford (Does Daniel benefit from having better receivers? Does Bradford have a better offensive line, running game and defense to get him the ball?) could go into early December when the Big 12 title game is played.
      Up next: Sept. 27 vs. TCU.

      3. Tim Tebow, Florida, QB, Jr.
      Last week: Idle.
      Season: 30-of-49 passing, 393 yards, 3 TDs; 22 rushes, 92 yards.
      Heisman-o-meter: As Daniel, Bradford and others have made early-season cases for the Heisman, the incumbent has yet to be the Tebow we know. For Saturday’s game at Tennessee, it will be interesting to see if the Gators’ rushing attack has improved since the Miami contest and who’s doing the heavy lifting. None of Florida’s tailbacks were effective against the Hurricanes, forcing the running load onto Tebow’s legs, which could prove great for a Heisman repeat but not so good for the Gators’ long term goals.
      Up next: Saturday at Tennessee.

      Daniel has been the best quarterback of this young season and his play at the end of the opener against Illinois was fantastic. But even though the Illini proved to be a tougher opponent than many thought, Daniel’s first true test comes next week when the Tigers travel to Nebraska and take on an improved Huskers program.

      Unfortunately college football fans have to wait two more weeks before Bradford faces his first real test. After TCU this week and at Baylor next Saturday, Oklahoma hosts Texas and Kansas in back-to-back weeks. Bradford might have the chance to win or lose the Heisman in those weeks.

      Gators use big fourth to top Canes

      The Florida-Miami rivalry isn’t quit what it used to be. The game was largely close throughout, but the Gators used a 17-point fourth quarter to top the Canes 26-3 Saturday night in “The Swamp.”

      It was over when… Tim Tebow’s 14-yard TD pass to Aaron Hernandez came on the Gators’ sixth play from scrimmage and only 2:26 into the game.
      Gameball goes to… Tim Tebow, who threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 55 more yards.
      Stat of the game… 1.6: Miami only averaged 1.6 yards per carry and had 61 rushing yards in the game.

      Randy Shannon has Miami’s football program moving in the right direction but Saturday night’s game proves the Canes have a long way to get on Florida’s powerhouse level again. Unfortunately a game like this is a killer for Miami in the Florida recruiting war. They just don’t have any offensive firepower.

      The official Miami-Florida smack talk thread

      Throw out the records, polls and rankings, because Miami vs. Florida is one of the most heated rivalries in all of college football. The two teams will square off again this Saturday at 8:00pm ET on ESPN.

      Last week the Gators (1-0) rolled over Hawaii 56-10 as Heisman candidate Tim Tebow completed 9 of 14 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing nine times for 37 yards. The Canes (1-0) throttled Charleston Southern 52-7 amassing 416 total yards, including 224 on the ground.

      Miami has dominated the recent meetings between the two schools, winning the last six contests. On a whole, the Hurricanes also have five national championships to the Gators’ two, even though Florida has become the more dominant program the past couple years.

      The smack talk from the players is already flying. Florida receiver Louis Murphy had this to say about the “U”:

      “If I’m right, the ‘U’ stands for the University of Miami,” said Murphy. “Well, we’re the University of Florida. We’re the ‘U.’ I don’t refer to them as the ‘U.’ I refer to them as Miami. If the ‘U’ is for university and winning and championships, we’re the ‘U.’ They are Miami, and that’s what I call them.”

      Even Tebow got into the chatter with this to say in reference to watching a Miami game while on recruiting trip a few years ago:

      “I am huge into the college environment and excitement, and you look around, and there were 30,000 empty seats,” Tebow said. “Then you come to Florida and you see this environment. … Wow, what a difference.”

      Oddsmakers have made the Gators a 21.5-point favorite, which is a huge spread given this is such a big rivalry and that Florida hasn’t beaten Miami in their last six meetings. But obviously with the Gators transforming into a powerhouse over the years while Miami has struggled, as well having the more talented roster, oddsmakers probably figure Urban Meyer will try to bury his instate rivals to gain an edge on the recruiting front. These two schools are always battling each other for top recruits every year, so both could use the outcome of this game to get an edge.

      Week 1 College Football Primer

      The line is old, tired and clichéd by I’m going to use it anyway: Football is back!

      This is the opening week of college football with action kicking off Thursday, August 25 and running through Labor Day, Monday, September 1. Below is our Week 1 College Football Primer.

      Top 25 Action:
      No. 20 Illinois at No. 6 Missouri – Saturday, August 30, 8:30pm ET
      Ron Zook and the Illini try to build on their 2007 success with a trip to Missouri to take on the No. 6 Tigers. Quarterback Chase Daniel looks to start his Heisman Trophy campaign off with a bang as he’ll face an Illinois defense that ranked 83rd in the nation against the pass last season. Even though this looks like a mismatch in favor of Missouri, clearly oddsmakers feel that the Illini can keep the game close considering the Tigers opened up as 8.5-point favorites.

      No. 24 Alabama at No. 9 Clemson – Saturday, August 30, 8:00pm ET
      The Tigers are considered the favorites to win the ACC this season, but Tommy Bowden’s crew has found a way to underachieve in the past. Clemson arguably has the best senior quarterback in the country Cullen Harper and the ACC’s best backfield tandem in James Davis and C.J. Spiller. For Alabama, Nick Saban’s team is expected to be improved this year and should give Clemson a game this weekend.

      Keep your eye on:
      Hawaii at No. 5 Florida – Saturday, August 30, 12:30pm ET
      Hawaii lost their all-time leading passer Colt Brennan to the NFL and head coach June Jones to SMU, but the Warriors are still expected to light up the scoreboard. The Gators are clearly the better team, led by 2007 Heisman winner Tim Tebow, but Hawaii is no cupcake opponent. Think there might be some points scored in this game? Oddsmakers have established the over/under total at a whopping 71 points.

      Upset Watch:
      Appalachian State at No. 7 LSU – Saturday, August 30, 5:00pm ET
      The Mountaineers couldn’t do it again could they? LSU is solid in the trenches and should be able to overpower tiny App State, but the same was said last year when the Mountaineers rolled into Ann Arbor and knocked off Michigan. With the explosive Armanti Edwards at quarterback, anything is possible.
