John Mayer: “Tiger Woods’ problems come from him being married.”

Tiger Woods apparently didn’t need to go to sex counseling; he could have just asked singer John Mayer to solve all his problems.

From the New York Daily News:

“Tiger Woods’ problems come from him being married. The end,” Mayer said to the U.K.’s The Independent newspaper. “If Tiger Woods was single and he texted a girl and said ‘I wanna wear your ass like a hat’, why would that ever hit the news?”

“I write a lot of dirty text messages to girls, and you’ve never seen any of them,” said Mayer, whose famous past girlfriends include Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Simpson and Minka Kellly.

“Why? Because if a girl brought a dirty text message from me to the newspapers, they’d say ‘I don’t have an angle here. Someone wants to wear your ass like a hat? Big deal. He’s 32 years old. He’s a single guy. If John Mayer has a wife and sends dirty texts, then we got a story,” he explained.

First of all, I’d like to nominate Mayer’s “I wanna wear your ass like a hat” line as quote of the year. I know it’s only February, but I see that quote having staying power throughout 2010.

Secondly, I’m officially setting the over/under on total times Mayer has said that to a girl at 21.5. And this might be one of those times when you don’t over think it and you just go with the “over.”

Lastly, I couldn’t agree more with Mayer, although I wouldn’t have used the same terms as he did. How many times do sports fans say around the water cooler that Player X shouldn’t have gotten married during his playing days? That he should bang as many broads as he wants and then go get married when his career is over? I know I’ve said it a dozen times about athletes and that’s all Mayer is essentially saying himself. Woods’ is “problem” is that he was married and he was doing horrible things behind his wife’s back. That’s the real issue here – he’s a womanizer that was cheating on his wife.

And Mayer’s point about the media is right on, too. The media does look for angles in stories and love it when someone screws up. Tiger screwed up and the media was all over it. If Mayer did the same thing, it might be a story but it wouldn’t have staying power. (At least not like that fantastic quote of his above.)

England captaincy in jeopardy amid public affair

John Terry, captain for the English national football team, is currently under fire after news surfaced on his affair with teammate Wayne Bridge’s wife, Vanessa Perroncel. This leaves England’s manager, Fabio Capello, to consider how to handle Terry’s captaincy.

From FOXSports.com:

The FA was widely reported to be leaving the decision on the Chelsea defender’s position to coach Fabio Capello, but sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe said whoever fills the role of England captain should behave off the field as well as on.

Sutcliffe said reports that the married Terry had an affair with the partner of England teammate Wayne Bridge “call into question his role as England captain.”

“On the field, John Terry is a fantastic player and a good England captain,” Sutcliffe said. “But to be the captain of England you have got to have wider responsibilities for the country.”

Terry had been in line to lead England at this year’s World Cup until last week when a judge lifted a court order that had prevented media from reporting the allegations.

The FA has yet to comment on Terry’s position, but Capello is likely to be questioned on the subject at Sunday’s draw in Warsaw for the 2012 European Championship.

Just imagine if any of Tiger Woods’ affairs included the wives of fellow PGA Tour members. That would have given his scandal an entirely different dimension. To make matter’s worse, allegations have surfaced that Terry arranged an abortion for the child Perroncel was hiding. Say what you will about Tiger, but I don’t think he deserves the same ridicule as Terry.

Report: Tiger was in an Ambien-induced stupor when he crashed car

According to FOX Sports.com, new details have emerged surrounding Tiger Woods’ car accident, including how he had taken Ambein right before he attempted to flee from his pissed off wife.

Among the details: The half-hour conversation with Uchitel satisfied Elin’s curiosity until details from the National Enquirer story began to leak on the Internet. She again confronted her golfer husband on Thanksgiving night, who argued with her and then took an Ambien to go to sleep. That’s when Elin looked through his phone and began texting his alleged mistress, posing as her husband, according to Daily Beast sources.

“I miss you,” she texted. “When are we seeing each other again?”

Uchitel’s response made it sound like she had talked to Tiger earlier in the night, and Elin called Uchitel to confront her, confirming her suspicions that her husband was cheating.

That’s when Elin went to confront Tiger, screaming and hitting him during their argument. He locked himself in the bathroom where he sent a text to Uchitel, warning her that his wife knew about their relationship.

When he came out, Elin grabbed his phone and found the text. She picked up a golf club while her husband ran to his car, shoeless and still in a haze due to the Ambien he had taken, according to the report.

He crashed his car into a tree and fire hydrant in his neighbor’s yard. One source said Tiger’s story to the cops about his windows being smashed in by Elin to free him was a lie to protect his wife.

I’m sorry, but there’s just something ironically funny about a man being beaten with his own golf club for cheating on his wife.

AT&T drops Tiger Woods as a sponsor

AT&T has dropped Tiger Woods like a bad cell phone connection. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

From ESPN.com:

AT&T Inc. said Thursday it would no longer sponsor Tiger Woods, joining Accenture in dropping support for the world’s top golfer, who’s taking a break from the sport to focus on his marriage after his admitted infidelity.

The phone company hasn’t used Woods’ image extensively in advertising, but its logo appeared on his golf bag. That deal had been billed as a “multiyear” agreement when it was signed early in 2009, after Buick ended its endorsement one year early because of its financial woes.

Woods has also been the host of the AT&T National PGA Tour event since it started in 2007. Tour spokesman Ty Votaw said that since Woods is on indefinite leave from professional golf, he will not serve as host for the 2010 event. However, his Tiger Woods Foundation will continue to be the beneficiary of the AT&T National, under a contract that runs through 2014, Votaw said.

The frequency at which sponsors are dropping Woods reminds me of when companies were kicking Michael Vick to the curb once he was indicted on dog-fighting charges. But I wonder whether or not they’ll all come back in a couple of years when he starts winning majors again.

Tag Heurer watches distancing itself from Woods

Photo from fOTOGLIF

Mindy should have been here ten minutes ago. I know because of my trusty watch. My Tag Heurer watch.

Tag Heurer — if she’s not on time, at least we are.

Tag Heurer, the pricey Swiss watch brand, is the latest of Tiger’s sponsors to distance themselves from the philandering superstar.

“His personal obsession with results and perfection, his ability to withstand pressure, to meet expectations and exceed them, but also his love of discipline — all this makes him a natural partner for the brand.”

Not anymore.

“The partnership with Tiger Woods will continue but we will downscale the use of his image in certain markets for a period of time, depending on his decision about returning to professional golf,” Tag Heuer said in a statement released Friday. “We will continue to actively support the Tiger Woods Foundation.”

Read: What we’re trying to say is, if people seem to forget about this whole mess, we’re back on board.

The company, which had initially supported Woods, was paying him $2 million annually, according to the Wall Street Journal. Friday’s announcement comes one week after Gillette announced a retrenching of its advertising with the 33-year-old Woods and Accenture, the global consulting firm, ended its six-year relationship with him.

Also Friday, Woods’ image on a website banner promoting the Arnold Palmer Invitational PGA Tour event was removed. The tournament is played in Woods’ home of Orlando, Fla., and pictures of Woods holding a tournament trophy and another of Woods exuberantly yelling were replaced with images of Palmer.

Hey Tiger, you better start saving, buddy. Oh, right, you’ll be fine — you’re a billionaire. I forgot.
