      Couch Potato Alert: 8/25

      With the 2008 Summer Olympics coming to an end, the sports lineup is looking somewhat bleak this week until Thursday, when college football returns!

      – Week 3 of the NFL preseason concludes Monday night in San Diego when the Seahawks come to town. The game can be seen on ESPN at 8:00 PM Eastern. I know it’s just preseason, but at least the starters will play for a while, and it’s going to be the most NFL football we’ll see until September 4th when the Giants and Redskins open up the regular season.

      – “Hard Knocks” with the Dallas Cowboys continues on HBO this Wednesday at 10:00 PM Eastern. It’s the fourth episode of six.

      – It’s crunch time in the MLB. Check out the Dodgers vs Phillies Monday night on ESPN2 at 7:00 PM Eastern. The Dodgers are three games back of the Diamondbacks and need to get things back on track. It won’t be easy against a Phillies team that’s just half a game back of the Mets in the NL East.

      – Although the Red Sox and Yankees aren’t at the top of the AL East for the first time in about a thousand years, it’s still the biggest rivalry in baseball. Watch the two teams clash this Wednesday at 7:00 PM Eastern on ESPN.

      – Thankfully, college football is back! There’ll be a few games airing this Thursday. ESPN will televise NC State @ South Carolina, ESPN2 will air Oregon State @ Stanford. Be sure to check out your local Fox Sports Net channels to see what else might be on.

      Shawne Merriman’s career might be over

      Rotoworld.com reports that San Diego Chargers’ linebacker Shawne Merriman has not one, but two torn ligaments in his knee. The injuries are a threat to Merriman’s career.

      Shawne Merriman revealed Saturday that his career could be over. In addition to a torn PCL, Merriman has a torn LCL in his left knee.

      His knee requires extensive reconstructive surgery. Perhaps Merriman will chance it and play this year, but that would be foolish. His contract is up after the 2009 season and if he has the procedure, Merriman could try continuing his career afterwards. He’d risk more damage by playing on the knee in 2008. He needs to be removed from IDP draft boards.

      That’s quite a reversal from Friday’s report, which stated that Merriman could play this year if he avoids surgery, or miss the entire season if he opts to have a procedure done. This is horrible news for such a young, productive player and while the Chargers’ defense is still quite good, losing Merriman would be a huge blow.

      Shawne Merriman has ligament damage in knee – Chargers’ GM not happy

      The San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that Chargers’ linebacker Shawne Merriman has ligment damage in his left knee and might miss the entire season if he opts for surgery.

      “It’s finding out what do I need to fix, what I need to do,” Merriman said by phone. “If it’s left up to me, I want to play football. I can’t stand sitting out.”

      Merriman’s options for fixing what he said was a torn posterior cruciate ligament (among other issues) in his left knee range from doing nothing to having a surgery that would delay the start of his season to undergoing reconstructive surgery that would keep him out all season.

      On a semi-related note, the Tribune also noted that Chargers’ GM A.J. Smith isn’t too pleased with Merriman’s activities off the field.

      Asked yesterday how he felt about Merriman’s latest venture, wherein the linebacker will fly from San Diego to Los Angeles after practice each Thursday and tape a show about the NFL on Fox Sports Net, Smith said this:

      “My feeling about any of his off-the-field activities will be between me and Shawne. Shawne has many, many activities off the field, and that’s his business, along with his agents, marketing people, publicist and business partners. My only hope is that he remembers his high-level football performance is what drives his off-the-field attraction.”

      Smith should be reminded that these players have lives off the football field. While it’s true Merriman is being paid millions of dollars to play football, it’s still only a job. If he wants to pursue other things off the field, it should be nobody’s business but his own.

      Best all-time franchise players for all 32 NFL teams

      ESPN.com did a cool feature recently when they asked SportsNation to select an all-time player for each NFL team. Some players were obvious choices for teams, including Brett Favre for the Packers and Barry Sanders for the Lions, but there were some question picks, as well.

      The site added links to video of each player, as well as a chance to debate each choice.

      Here were some of the more obvious selections:

      49ers: Joe Montana, QB
      Packers: Brett Favre, QB
      Lions: Barry Sanders, RB
      Browns: Jim Brown, RB
      Dolphins: Dan Marino, QB
      Patriots: Tom Brady, QB
      Broncos: John Elway, QB
      Chargers: LaDainian Tomlinson, RB
      Colts: Peyton Manning, QB

      And some of the more questionable choices:

      Ravens: Matt Stover, K
      Saints: Bobby Hebert, QB

      As a colleague pointed out, it’s hard to argue with any of these picks because they were chosen by fans. But Matt Stover over Ray Lewis? Bobby Hebert over Archie Manning?

      Lewis has been the face of Baltimore’s franchise for almost a decade and Stover is a kicker (albeit a very good kicker) for Jonathan Ogden’s sake. And I know Hebert was a fan favorite that led the team to the playoffs in 1988, but if Manning had a better team around him, he might have led the Saints to their first ever Super Bowl. I thought Pat Swilling would have gotten more love, too. (Swilling only got 2.4% of votes.)

      Cool feature, though.
