Plaxico Burress’ gun case has been pushed back to September according to a report by the New York Daily News.

The former New York Giants receiver will appear in court Monday on gun charges – but the case will be delayed because his lawyer has been unable to make a deal with prosecutors.

“There is no agreement at all,” Burress’ lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, told the Daily News.
The lawyer said the lanky wide receiver hopes to get the case put off until September – which may mean he could play in the upcoming season.

“We’ll be in and out of court in five minutes,” Brafman said. “There is going to be an adjournment.”
Sources say the district attorney’s office is insisting on jail time in the case – which could kill the 31 year old’s hopes of returning to the football field.

If he were to play this season, I doubt any team would give him more than a one-year deal. How could they when he might wind up in prison sometime in 2010?

If he does play, the Jets, Bucs and Bears are the three teams reportedly most interested in Plax. In the end, the Jets might make the biggest push seeing as how they lost Laveranues Coles this offseason and have lacked a true deep threat since Santana Moss. Jerricho Cotchery is underrated, but he would definitely benefit from having another receiver opposite him in the offense.

Now it’s just a matter of whether or not any team will take a chance on Burress.

Jets’ GM Mike Tannenbaum revealed after the draft on Sunday that he contacted agent Drew Rosenhaus about Plaxico Burress’s pending legal situation.

“Consistent with our normal approach of performing our due diligence, we contacted Drew Rosenhaus several days ago prior to the draft to inquire about Plaxico’s pending legal situation,” said GM Mike Tannenbaum in a statement Sunday night. “However, we have had no discussions with Drew about Plaxico since that time.”

The Jets’ decision not to draft a wide receiver had nothing to do with their inquiry about the controversial Burress, according to a person with knowledge of the Jets’ thinking. That person spoke on the condition of anonymity because he’s not authorized to speak for the club.

“The Jets kicked the tires a little bit but it hasn’t advanced beyond that,” said the person.

This just goes to prove that talent usually exceeds all else in professional sports. Even though a player was a jag off to his former team and was dumb enough to not only bring a loaded weapon into a nightclub, but actually try and secure that weapon in the band of his sweat pants (who wears sweat pants to a nightclub anyway?) only to shoot himself in the leg, he will still be given every opportunity to get back onto the field.

The Jets are freaking out that they don’t have enough quality receivers to give rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez – and they should be. If the season were to start tomorrow, the Jets would line up Jerricho Cotchery (who is talented, but probably can’t carry a thin receiving corps on his own) and either David Clowney or Brad Smith out wide. Not exactly Jerry Rice and John Taylor, you know?

Still, if Tannenbaum were smart, he’d stay away from Burress and let his legal situation run its course. Then maybe you can see what kind of mental and physical shape the guy is in, and whether or not Roger Goodell is even going to let him see the field next season. And even then, I still wouldn’t touch him with a 700-foot pole.

In the NO/CAR game, Muhsin Muhammad (3-43) and Lance Moore (3-10) came back to Earth a little bit. It’s tough to count on either of them, especially Moore who failed to produce even though the Saints were trailing most of the game…Bernard Berrian (6-81-1) is turning into a must-start with Gus Frerotte under center. Berran is now averaging 5.0-96-0.6 since Frerotte took over in Week 3…Devin Hester (2-22) left the game with a quad injury and was unable to return…Both Housh (8-58) and Ocho Cinco (8-52-1) were targeted often by Ryan Fitzpatrick, and it looks like Carson Palmer may be out a while…The Chiefs are a mess, but Dwayne Bowe (7-86) still put up good numbers in PPR leagues…Derrick Mason (6-87-1) continues to be Joe Flacco’s favorite target and is a WR2/WR3 in PPR leagues…Terrell Owens (2-31) looks like he’s going to suffer while Tony Romo is out…Jerricho Cotchery’s dismal outing (1-0) throws his must-start status into flux. It might have had more to do with Oakland’s fine CB Nnamdi Asomugha than anything the Jets were doing.

Brett Favre threw six touchdown passes and the Jets’ defense caused seven turnovers in New York’s 56-35 rout of the Cardinals on Sunday.

Favre had touchdown passes of 12, 34 and 2 yards as the Jets hung 34 points on Arizona in the second quarter. Favre then connected on scores of 17, 40 and 24 in the second half while announcers across the country tripped on themselves to utter the words, “That’s just classic Favre isn’t he? He always looks like he’s having fun!” (Seriously, I must have heard that line 42 times today.)

Laveranues Coles hauled in eight passes for 105 yards and three touchdowns while Jerricho Cotchery caught four passes for 67 yards and two scores. The Jets did absolutely whatever they wanted against a hapless Cardinals’ secondary, which had no clue on how to defense any New York receiver. The Jets improved to 2-2 on the year.

Despite completing 40 of 57 passes for 472 yards and two touchdowns, Kurt Warner’s poor play killed Arizona all day. Facing only a two-man rush midway threw the second quarter, Warner managed to throw an interception to Darrelle Revis, who baited him like a trout and returned the pick for a 32-yard touchdown pass. No-thumbs Warner also lost four fumbles, which means he contributed to six of Arizona’s seven turnovers.

In a scary moment late in the fourth quarter, Cards’ WR Anquan Boldin (10 rec., 119 yards, 1 TD) was crushed in between two defenders and appeared to lose conciseness for a moment. He was carted off the field, but it’s unclear at this point how serious the injury is. Arizona is now 2-2 on the season.

LT2 was *supposed* to split touches with Darren Sproles, but when the lights were on, Tomlinson got 29 touches to Sproles’ seven. LT2 gained 87 total yards and scored twice…Sproles looked good gaining 77 yards on his seven touches…Phillip Rivers looked great once again, throwing for 250 yards, a TD and a pick. He’s really starting to look like an every week fantasy starter…Rivers spread the ball around to Vincent Jacskson (3-74), Craig Davis (3-43), Chris Chambers (1-27-1) and Antonio Gates (2-25-1). None of those guys had an outstanding game, which is what happens when the QB spreads it around…Brett Favre finished with good fantasy numbers (271 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT), but is still having regular miscommunication with his receivers. Still, Jerricho Cotchery (10-76), Laveranues Coles (6-75-1), Chansi Stuckey (6-42-1) and Dustin Keller (4-41-1) all had solid games. One thing’s for sure with Favre – if his team is behind early, he’s probably going to finish with a lot of yards and a few TD (along with a few picks)…Since the Jets trailed the entire game, Thomas Jones (12 touches, 54 yards) never really got it going.
