      Bears interview Martz for O-coordinator job

      According to the Chicago Sun Times, the Bears interviewed Mike Martz for their vacant offensive coordinator job on Friday.

      Martz had spoken to Bears head coach Lovie Smith early in the process, but he finally got an interview today. Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Rogers is believed to have made a strong impression on the Bears during an interview Thursday, and he or Martz could compel the Bears not to wait for any assistants on the two Super Bowl teams.

      As for Martz, he and Smith have plenty of history; Smith was Martz’a defensive coordinator in St. Louis. But Martz will have to prove several things today. First, that he isn’t going to ignore running the ball, which is essential in Chicago yet goes against the grain of his track record. And second, that he can co-exist with his players and coaches, particularly assistant head coach Rod Marinelli, who fired Martz when he was the head coach of the Detroit Lions.

      This would be one desperate party hiring another desperate party. The Bears have had zero luck in trying to replace Ron Turner (whom they fired earlier this month) and Martz wants to get back into coaching after a one-year hiatus as an analyst on the NFL Network’s “The Head Coaches.”

      What’s interesting about this potential marriage is that Martz criticized Jay Cutler earlier this season after the Bears’ QB was nonchalant in a post game presser after he threw four interceptions in a Week 1 loss to the Packers.

      “He just doesn’t get it. He doesn’t understand that he represents a great head coach and the rest of those players on that team … somebody needs to talk to him,” said Martz.

      As a fan, I would love to see how Martz and Cutler would interact. It would either be an offensive explosion every week or be a complete and utter disaster. Either way, sign me up for that scenario.

      Bears’ Gaines Adams dies of cardiac arrest

      Bears’ 26-year-old defensive end Gaines Adams died Sunday morning after he was taken to a Greenwood, S.C., emergency room.

      From ESPN.com:

      Greenwood County Coroner James T. Coursey told ESPN that Adams was taken to the emergency room at Self Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9 a.m. ET Sunday morning.

      Coursey said the preliminary autopsy performed Sunday indicated Adams died of cardiac arrest caused by an enlarged heart.
      Adams, 26, listed at 6-foot-5 and 256 pounds, played in college at Clemson and was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft. He was traded to the Bears in October.

      Considering that Adams was in top physical condition, this is a sad, shocking story. But if he had the enlarged heart for his entire life and they didn’t discover it until his death, then it didn’t matter what kind of shape he was in. My condolences go out to his family.

      The Bears traded their second round pick in April to acquire Adams from the Buccaneers in October. Chicago doesn’t have a pick in either of the first two rounds this year, after also trading their first rounder to the Broncos as part of the Jay Cutler deal.

      Report: Lovie Smith to return in 2010

      Bear fans won’t be receiving a belated Christmas gift this year as the Chicago Tribune is reporting that Lovie Smith is expected to return to the sidelines in 2010.

      Smith met with team president Ted Phillips and general manager Jerry Angelo on Monday, and the sweeping changes that many fans have been hoping to see are not expected to happen. There may be changes, and Smith noted in his postgame news conference Sunday at Detroit that change comes every year, but it will be far from a housecleaning.

      Smith could be given a win-or-else mandate from management. He is signed through 2011 and with $11 million remaining on his contract, the McCaskeys were thought to be unlikely to part with the coach who took them to Super Bowl XLI three years ago. It will be interesting to see what type of role Phillips has taken in what are football decisions.

      This isn’t the news Bear fans were hoping for when black Monday rolled around. Smith is just 23-25 as a head coach since he led the team to the Super Bowl a few years ago and the Bears have missed the playoffs the last three seasons. One would have thought that his Super Bowl credit has been used up by now.

      The Bears’ immediate future doesn’t looking promising. They’re without a first round pick in each of the next two drafts after trading for Jay Cutler, and they don’t have a second round pick in 2010 because they traded it to the Bucs for Gaines Adams. The offensive line is a complete mess, the defense is aging and outside of Cutler and Lance Briggs, there isn’t a ton of marquee talent on the roster.

      Is Smith a strong enough personality to overcome these disadvantages and lead the Bears back to the playoffs? After what the Bears showed this season, I highly doubt it.

      Jay Cutler loves himself the interception

      The good, bad and ugly of Jay Cutler was on full display in Week 14, as the Bears lost to the Packers, 21-14.

      Cutler made some outstanding throws into tight coverage while throwing for 209 yards and two touchdowns. His second touchdown pass (which gave Chicago a 14-13 lead early in the second half) was a laser to Devin Aromashodu (who?), who made an incredible grab along the sidelines.

      But what has often been the case for Cutler in 2009, he threw two horrible interceptions, which aided in the Bears’ demise. On both picks, he underthrew Johnny Knox because the pair weren’t on the same page. Cutler thought Knox would break off his route, while Knox continued to head up field.

      Who’s more at fault? Who knows. The only thing that matters is that Cutler’s first year in Chicago has been a small disaster and the Bears have fallen to 5-8 despite having Super Bowl aspirations in preseason.

      As for the Packers, Aaron Rodgers (16-of-24, 180 yards) didn’t tear up the stat sheet but then again, he didn’t have to. Ryan Grant rushed for 137 yards on 20 carries and the Green Bay defense once again turned in a solid performance in the victory.

      This was actually a bigger win than some may think. After beating the Ravens on Monday night, this could have served as a letdown game of sorts for Green Bay. But they stay focused, earned a win on the road and will now jockey for position in the NFC Wild Card race the rest of the way.

      Is Charlie Weis a good fit for the Bears?

      Charlie Weis needs a job and the Chicago Bears need someone capable of calling more than screen passes.

      Seems like Weis and Da Bears would make a perfect fit.

      According to a report by the Chicago Sun Times, Weis would be interested in becoming the Bears’ next offensive coordinator if/when the job becomes available this offseason. Ron Turner currently holds the position, but he’s expected to be let go for the way Chicago has struggled offensively this season.

      Weis failed as a head coach at Notre Dame, but his offenses were successful. He also had plenty of success as the offensive coordinator for the Patriots, so if the Bears did decide that he was a good fit, at least they would be hiring someone with experience.

      That said, who knows if Lovie Smith will be retained at the end of the season. If the Bears decide to go in another direction, it would be up to the new head coach as to whom his coordinators would be. And even if Smith doesn’t get fired, there’s no guarantee that he’d work well with Weis.

      Bear fans may crucify me for saying this, but the fact of the matter is that Turner isn’t the only reason why the Bears have been completely inept offensively this season. The additions the team made to the offensive line this offseason haven’t panned out and it has cost Matt Forte what was supposed to be a promising second season. Cutler doesn’t have time to throw the ball and even when he does, he forces passes thinking he has to make plays through the air because the running game is non-existent. Turner will essentially serve as the scapegoat to a much bigger problem.

      We’ll see if this story develops, but as of right now it’s just a small rumor that may or may not grow legs.
