Jake Locker returning to Washington for senior season

Washington quarterback Jake Locker has decided to return for his senior season reports the Seattle Post Intelligencer.

“After a great deal of careful thought and deliberation, I have decided to return to Washington and play my senior year,” Locker said in a statement. “I am very excited about this team’s opportunities and potential for the upcoming season and I am looking forward to being a part of it.”

Draft guru Mel Kiper had Locker fifth on his Big Board last week and Rob Rang had him third in his most-recent mock draft.

Locker completed 230 of 395 passes for 2,800 yards in his just-completed junior season, throwing for 21 touchdowns with 11 interceptions in coach Steve Sarkisian’s pro-style offense.

Depending on where he wound have been selected, Locker just passed up $36-72 million. But as long as he stays healthy and has another solid season, the money will be waiting for him in the pros in 2011. You only get one shot to play college football.

Notre Dame’s Jimmy Clausen to turn pro

ESPN.com reports that Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen has decided to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft.

“After the season, in talking to my parents and obviously Coach Weis, I just feel it’s the right time,” Clausen told ESPN.com on Monday before a scheduled 2 p.m. ET news conference in South Bend. “Coach Weis told me whether he was going to be here or not be here, it was time for me to go. He thought I’ve improved so much since I came to Notre Dame. So, I’m taking his advice, and I’m going to head out.”

“It’ll probably be just like going from high school to college, but a lot faster than college is. Obviously, being under Coach Weis, being in a pro-style offense, knowing the terminologies, will help me. But the biggest thing will probably be just getting in the playbook and mentally preparing myself to do everything I can to get on the field as quick as I can and help whichever team I go to win.”

Mel Kiper has Clausen rated as the top quarterback on his big board and the fourth best prospect overall.

He’ll unfairly be compared to Brady Quinn because they played in the same offense at Notre Dame, but at least in my opinion, Clausen is a more polished prospect now than Quinn was when he entered the draft. In terms of raw talent and upside, Clausen beats Quinn but that obviously doesn’t mean that he’ll be a better pro.

With Sam Bradford, Jake Locker, Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow set to join Clausen in April, the 2010 NFL Draft will have plenty of intrigue surrounding the quarterback class.

The NCAA mess

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/pac10/0-2-38/Yes--it-was-a-terrible-call-Husky-nation.htmlEveryone knew the new celebration rule in the NCAA was idiotic. Now we have a situation where Washington lost a chance to go to overtime agaist BYU due to an idiotic call. Jake Locker scored a TD to tie the game, assuming the Huskies hit the PAT. After the touchdown, he tossed the ball behind his head to celebrate with teammates, and he was called for a 15-yard penalty. Then Washington missed the extra point.

Years ago, the NCAA actually developed some decent rules to eliminate taunting, and the rules worked well. Now you always see players celebrating with their teammates after a big play, and you don’t see them standing over opposing players and taunting them. The rules worked.

The new rules, however, are a joke. Everyone agrees. Fix them.
