Mark Sanchez has PCL sprain

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jets’ quarterback Mark Sanchez has a sprained PCL in his right knee, but may play through the injury as long as he can tolerate the pain.

Ironically, Sanchez had spent time learning how to slide with Joe Girardi, but hurt himself when he dove head first after scrambling. After the game, Sanchez even apologized to Girardi:

“I’m sorry to Coach Girardi,” Sanchez said. “He spent all that time trying to help me. And I know Rex wants me to slide and everybody wants me to slide, but in the heat of the moment I was trying to get the first down. That’s just the way I play.”

Outside of his hot start, Sanchez has suffered plenty of growing pains through his first year. But with the way backup Kellen Clemens looked Thursday night in New York’s 19-13 win over the Bills, Sanchez remains the team’s best option to win. Clemens completed just 1-of-2 pass attempts for 14 yards and looked like player that had no business being under center. He showed zero pocket awareness and it’s a good thing the Jets were leading when he entered the game so they wouldn’t have to rely on Clemens throwing vertically.

After playing on Thursday night, the Jets will have a few extra days off to rest before their Week 14 game against the Bucs. The extra time should help Sanchez heal, but team will have to evaluate his injury next week during practice.

No wonder Rex Ryan didn’t want to bench Mark Sanchez

For those wondering why Rex Ryan hasn’t benched struggling rookie Mark Sanchez yet, I hope you were one of the four people that caught the Jets’ 19-13 win over the Bills on Thursday night on the NFL Network.

After Sanchez suffered a knee injury midway through the second half, Kellen Clemens entered the game and completed just 1-of-2 passes for 14 yards. The Jets showed little trust in him to put the ball in the air and I don’t blame them given Clemens’ lack of awareness in the pocket. It’s understandable that he would be a little rusty considering he hasn’t seen much game action this season, but that’s no excuse for him to look completely inept.

Nevertheless, the Jets hung on for the victory and kept their slim playoff hopes alive for another week. They rushed for a staggering 249 yards (Thomas Jones had 109 of those yards) and Braylon Edwards caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Sanchez right before half to put New York ahead for good. (Of course, he also had a potential touchdown bounce off his face early in the second quarter, so he gave his usual inconsistent effort.)

It doesn’t appear that Sanchez’s injury is serious and it helps that the Jets now have extra days off before they take on the Buccaneers in Week 14. Hopefully for New York’s sake, Sanchez will be healthy enough to play because Clemens is brutal.

NFL Week 11 ROY Power Rankings

Suddenly lots of players are making a case here. Moreno was outstanding against that sieve of a Giants’ defense last night, looking like the guy the Broncos knew they drafted.

1. Jairus Byrd, Buffalo Bills—Though he didn’t pick one off against Jacksonville last week, Byrd is still on pace for 12. That would be one heck of a season for anyone, let alone a rookie playing on a crappy team.

2. Percy Harvin, Minnesota Vikings—Another TD catch last weekend from his new best friend Brett Favre, Harvin is making coach Brad Childress look like a genius for taking a chance on him when many others turned their heads.

3. Knowshon Moreno, Denver Broncos—This guy had over 100 all-purpose yards last night against the G-men, and he could steal this award if he keeps that up.

4. James Laurinaitis, St. Louis Rams—You aren’t seeing a misprint here. Laurinaitis had 16 tackles against the Cardinals last Sunday, and has 66 solo tackles on the season. That number has him fifth in the NFL, an amazing feat for a rookie on (like Byrd) a crappy team.

5. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions—He gets a spot here solely on his guts, and for single-handedly bringing his team back last weekend against the Browns to steal a victory from the jaws of defeat. Sure, he regressed yesterday, but we’ll let that slide.

Honorable mention: Hakeem Nicks, Giants; Johnny Knox, Bears; Ryan Succop, Chiefs; Michael Oher, Ravens; LeSean McCoy, Eagles; Beanie Wells, Cardinals; Jeremy Maclin, Eagles

Jim Kelly lobbying for Bills to draft Tim Tebow

In hopes of one day being a part of the team’s ownership, former Buffalo quarterback Jim Kelly says the Bills should chuck Trent Edwards and consider drafting one of the top three signal callers in April. And if Kelly had his way, he’d lean towards the team selecting Florida QB Tim Tebow.

From USA Today:

Kelly said the franchise needs to move on from the benched Trent Edwards, a 2007 third-round pick. Kelly suggested the Bills look hard at positioning themselves to draft University of Florida signal caller Tim Tebow, a two-time BCS national champion whose inspired, all-out play is reminiscent of a left-handed version of Kelly.

“I like Trent personally,” Kelly told USA TODAY. “He works hard. But he’s had three years. It’s time to find somebody who is the future of the Buffalo Bills.

“If I’m the owner, that’s what I’m thinking.

“Whether it’s Tim Tebow, whether they’ll have a shot at him when draft time comes … you have to look at the top three quarterbacks in the draft, really study them. And you look for a guy with good character, good leadership ability and good arm strength — and a guy who doesn’t come from California.

Kelly said the Bills’ experience with quarterbacks from the Golden State haven’t panned out.

The list includes Rob Johnson, who went 4-7 from 1998-2001, J.P. Losman, the 22nd overall pick in 2004, and Edwards, who was benched last week in favor of Ryan Fitzpatrick by interim head coach Perry Fewell following the firing of Dick Jauron.

I must be missing something, because I still don’t see Tebow being a good pro quarterback. He’s a fantastic athlete and he has a role in the NFL – I just don’t think it’s under center. I can’t see him consistently taking three or five step drops and making plays in a pro-style offense. But maybe that’s just me.

That said, I don’t think Kelly is off in his opinions about the Bills. Edwards has had his chances and he hasn’t developed. Granted, his offensive line is incredibly young and needs time to gel, but Edwards hasn’t shown much over the past three years that he can lead the Bills to the postseason.

The Bills need Mike Shanahan to come in and completely blow up the roster. He found Jay Cutler in the draft a couple years ago and even had some success with Brian Griese early in his career. Shanahan has the eye for talent, so if the Bills can persuade him to come to Buffalo, they need to turn everything over to him and just let him rebuild from the ground up.

Bill Cowher turns down Bills

According to the Buffalo News, Bill Cowher told the Bills that he isn’t interested in interviewing with the team at this time.

Apparently, he wants to wait until end of season before considering his options. But the refusal would seem to take him out of the running for the Bills.

The Bills are expected to sit down with former Denver coach Mike Shanahan within a week.

Their pursuit of the two high-profile coaching names is proof that Bills owner Ralph C. Wilson Jr. is willing to break with his tradition of hiring modestly-priced head coaches.

It’s good that Wilson is doing his due-diligence when it comes to seeking a replacement head coach. He needs to aim high and hopefully he’ll land one of the marquee names that won’t just be a great head coach, but someone that can also rebuild the franchise from the ground up.

It’ll be extremely interesting to see where Cowher winds up next season if he does decide to coach. Does he want a project like the Bills or Browns? Or does he want to step into a situation where the team already has its roster set, but just needs more on-field direction like in Dallas? Time will tell.
