NFL News & Notes: Willis McGahee to play, not start

Willis McGaheeThe Baltimore Sun is reporting that Ravens running back Willis McGahee will play in Week 3 against the Cleveland Browns, but won’t start or be the feature back. The Ravens will likely go with a running back-by-committee approach with McGahee and rookie Ray Rice sharing carries.

Rotoworld (via Chargers’ beat writer Kevin Acee on NFL Network) is reporting that Darren Sproles is likely to see more carries than LaDainian Tomlinson, who is batting a toe/foot injury. LT didn’t run last week against the Broncos, so it’s probably a wise move to limit his workload.

– The Cleveland Browns’ official website notes that receivers Braylon Edwards (shoulder) and Donte’ Stallworth (quads) are both listed as questionable this weekend against Baltimore. That certainly doesn’t bode well for a Browns’ offense that has struggled mightily in the team’s two losses this season.

– The Green Bay Packers official website is reporting that RB Ryan Grant has been upgraded to probable for the team’s Sunday night matchup with the Cowboys. Grant didn’t fare too well against a brutal Detroit front seven last week and he’ll need to step up to help take the pressure off of QB Aaron Rodgers.

The Monday After: NFL columnist and beat writers react

– John Tomase of the Boston Herald writes that Tom Brady’s injury has dealt a serious blow to the Patriots’ Super Bowl chances.

Braylon Edwards– Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain Dealer rips receiver Braylon Edwards for his dropped passes during the Browns’ opening season loss to the Cowboys. Pluto also takes aim at Cleveland’s poor defensive effort.

– Gene Frenette of the Florida Times-Union reacts to the Jaguars’ 17-10 loss to the Titans and writes that good teams must win when they’re at their worst.

– Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star writes that the Colts clearly weren’t ready for prime time as the Chicago Bears gashed them Sunday night.

– Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune notes that the Chargers lost their game with the Panthers well before Carolina scored a game-winning touchdown as time expired.

– Mike Vaccaro of the New York Post writes that Eric Mangini nearly allowed former Jets’ quarterback Chad Pennington to get revenge on his former team.

– Mich Albom of the Detroit Free Press notes that only the Lions can start off a game looking finished after the Falcons mounted a 21-0 lead en route to a 34-21 victory over the Lie-Downs Sunday.

Braylon Edwards hospitalized

Don’t worry, Browns fans. Braylon should be just fine. But he was hospitalized Saturday night.

Browns receiver Braylon Edwards was hospitalized Saturday night at the Cleveland Clinic after having a cut in his right foot repaired with stitches and could miss the next two exhibition games.

He was released Sunday, but did not practice in Berea.

He suffered the cut on his foot when he was running lightly in his socks at the end of practice Saturday afternoon with some other receivers. According to a photographer who was shooting the session, Edwards and fellow receiver Donte Stallworth were vying for the lead in a mock race when Stallworth’s cleat spiked Edwards’ right heel.

Not only is Donte Stallworth a danger to himself, he’s a danger to others.
