      Seahawks pay steep price for Chargers’ Whitehurst

      The Seahawks must be betting that Charlie Whitehurst will be their quarterback of the future, because they paid quite a price to acquire him from the Chargers on Wednesday night.

      Seattle and San Diego swapped second round picks in this April’s draft and the Chargers will also get the Seahawks’ 2011 third round pick in exchange for Whitehurst, who has compiled a grand total of zero pass attempts in four seasons. While it’s important to remember that Philip Rivers is the main reason Whitehurst hasn’t seen the field, it’s also noteworthy that the former Clemson product couldn’t beat out Billy Volek for the No. 2 job.

      That said, Whitehurst certainly has all the tools necessary to succeed as a starter. He has ideal size (6’4”, 227 pounds), good athleticism and decent arm strength. The problem is that he doesn’t have any experience, so it’s tough to know at this point what the Seahawks are getting. Either way, with the amount of compensation they gave up to acquire him from San Diego, it’s clear that Whitehurst is Pete Carroll’s quarterback for the future and the team considers him a valuable addition to its roster. If he winds up playing well in Seattle, then the compensation will turn out to be a bargain.

      As for the Chargers, they got quite the haul here. Moving up 20 spots in the second round and acquiring a third rounder in 2011 is great deal for a player that was never going to see the field. San Diego did very well here and now it has plenty of pieces to make more moves on draft day.

      Florida CB Haden runs 4.4 forty at Pro Day

      After he ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.57-4.60 range at the scouting combine, Florida cornerback Joe Haden rebounded with a solid showing at his Pro Day, clocking a time in the mid-4.4 range according to TFY Draft Insider.

      There were some pundits that thought Haden would slip in the first round after his showing at the combine, but he was dealing with a lower back sprain that no doubt factored into his slow forty time. But he apparently ran on sloppy conditions at his Pro Day and proved to scouts that he has more than enough speed to be a starting caliber corner at the next level.

      In my Mock 1.0, I have Cleveland taking Haden with the No. 8 overall pick, but I think his draft status will inevitably be tied to Tennessee safety Eric Berry. The Browns have major secondary needs and if Berry falls to No. 8, I don’t think he’ll get past Cleveland. If that happens, then Haden will likely fall out of the top 10 but won’t get past the 49ers at No. 14.

      If Berry is selected before then (I have him going No. 6 to the Seahawks), I believe the Browns will take Haden at No. 7 and pair him with Eric Wright, whom they believe can develop into a top 10 corner. Either way, I envision Cleveland investing their first round pick on its secondary this April.

      Holmgren officially makes first horrible decision with Cleveland

      Jake Delhomme must have comprising photos of Mike Holmgren, because that’s the only logical explanation as to why the Browns are set to pay the former Panther QB $7 million in 2010.

      I’m trying to give Holmgren the benefit of the doubt in his first season with the Browns, even though some of the decisions thus far have been a little head scratching. But this latest move is making it awfully hard for me to do that. There’s absolutely no reason to give a washed up Jake Delhomme $7 million, because chances are high that no other team would have. This kind of financial commitment signals that Holmgren wants Delhomme to be his starter in 2010, which is absolutely ludicrous.

      Delhomme was so bad last year that he made guys like Kerry Collins, Shaun Hill and whatever puss the Bills trotted onto the field look good. While he did turn in good efforts against the Falcons (twice) and Redskins, the rest of Delhomme’s season was highly forgettable. His skills have obviously deteriorated and his 8:18 touchdown to interception ratio proves that his decision-making isn’t quite up to par these days either. He was absolutely brutal against the Eagles in the opener and in his last game as a starter against the Jets. In fact, he was so bad against New York that most people figured that he had taken his last snap as a regular starter in the NFL. Most people outside of Holmgren, that is.

      I’m willing to bet that Seneca Wallace beats out Delhomme in preseason and becomes the Browns’ starting quarterback for 2010. And if that happens, then Holmgren’s decision to give Delhomme $7 mil will look even worse. I just don’t get it. I don’t get what Holmgren saw in Delhomme last year that made him believe that he could be his starting quarterback in 2010. The only thing I can think of is that Holmgren is trying to submarine Eric Mangini so that he can get rid of him after 2010. Because there’s no way Mangini will succeed if Delhomme winds up being the starter.

      Oh, and Rick Smith has my vote for 2010 Agent of the Year. Delhomme will make $19.7 million this season, which is so unbelievable that I might pass out on my keyboard before I complete this sentenohowg1hglwerkgh.gr…#

      Lions get good value in trade for Chris Houston

      While the deal isn’t official yet, ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Lions are on the verge of acquiring cornerback Chris Houston from the Falcons in exchange for their sixth round pick. In addition, the two teams would also swap selections in the fifth round.

      The Falcons drafted Houston out of Arkansas with the 41st overall pick (second round) in the 2007 draft in hopes that he would pair with DeAngelo Hall to form a formidable duo in their secondary. But Hall was traded the following year and despite having the opportunity to gain extensive playing time as a starter, Houston just hasn’t been an ideal fit in Atlanta.

      In Detroit, Houston will be able to play more press coverage, which should suit him better than the zone scheme that the Falcons run. He’s extremely athletic and if he can get his hands on a receiver at the line, he can be a decent cover corner. The problem is that he has massive issues trying to find the ball once it’s in the air and struggles playing in space, which is why he isn’t a fit in zone coverage. Still, he has all the athletic tools to succeed and if he winds up fulfilling his talent, he could be a solid No. 2 in the league.

      Brandon Marshall in Seattle for a visit, but who else is interested?

      Things could be heating up on the Brandon Marshall trade front. Here’s what we know so far:

      – On Saturday, Marshall was reportedly in Seattle doing a meet-and-greet with the Seahawks. While they didn’t sign the restricted free agent to an offer sheet, the Seattle Times speculates that the Seahawks would send the No. 6 overall pick in April’s draft to the Broncos for Marshall.

      If that sounds far-fetched, it’s probably because it is. In fact, ESPN NFC West beat writer Mike Sando says that he would be shocked if the Hawks parted with their top pick, although that doesn’t mean the two sides can’t work out another trade if Marshall is signed to an offer sheet.

      – Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post writes that the Seahawks could have competition for Marshall shortly, although he doesn’t say which teams could be interested. The very reliable Rotoworld.com speculates that the Patriots, Falcons and Bengals make sense.

      Out of the three teams Rotoworld mentions, I think the Patriots and Bengals do make sense, although I highly doubt the Falcons would join the party. While they would love to add another big time playmaker opposite Roddy White, I doubt they’ll part with their first round pick (19th overall) to address the offensive side of the ball with holes at outside linebacker and defensive end. GM Thomas Dimitroff would like to continue his rebuilding project on defense and it makes it harder for him to do that without a first round pick. I think Dunta Robinson was the only big splash the Falcons will make this offseason.

      We’ll monitor this situation next week and see if a) the Seahawks eventually sign Marshall to an offer sheet and/or b) another team joins the race.
