Browns’ rookie throws punch, ice in locker room fight

Things are getting a little testy between players of the 0-2 Browns.

According to a report by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, rookie defensive back Coye Francies threw a bucket of ice at several teammates after he was a victim of a prank, then threw a punch at veteran safety Abram Elam.

Francies burst into the locker dripping wet and carrying a Gatorade bucket full of ice and water. Apparently, his teammates had dumped a bucket on him and he was looking for revenge.

The incident happened during the media’s open locker room period. Francies threw half the bucket toward cornerback Brandon McDonald, some at safety Mike Adams and then headed toward Elam. When he got to Elam, he threw a punch, but Elam grabbed his arm. Before it got out of hand, Shaun Rogers, Eric Barton and D’Qwell Jackson led him outside to settle him down.

“We were just playing around, having some fun and games, know what I’m saying?,” said Francies at his locker after cooling off. “That’s pretty much it. It was all fun and games.”

So that’s your story and you’re sticking to it?

“Absolutely,” he said, with a smile on his face.

These kinds of situations have a weird way of bonding teammates. Despite their record, Cleveland hasn’t played poorly on defense and maybe this incident will lighten up the locker room or at least help clear the air. Either way, it looks like a dead issue and something that probably won’t spiral out of control.

I would love to hear how much head coach Eric Mangini is going to fine Francies for after wasting all of that ice though. Mangini was the same man that fined a Browns player $1,701 (which is the maximum fine allowed by the league’s collective bargaining agreement) for not paying for a $3 bottle of water from a hotel mini-bar upon checkout.

And your AFC East winner is…

Matt CasselThanks to Abram Elam, Shaun Ellis and a lot of J.P. Losman’s crap play, the Jets hung onto their first place grasp of the AFC East in Week 15. But the Dolphins also beat the 49ers (albeit in unconvincing fashion) and the Patriots topped the Raiders (in convincing fashion) to stay right in the mix. All three teams currently sit at 9-5 on the season.

Here’s what the three teams have left on their schedule:

Jets: at Seahawks, vs. Dolphins
Dolphins: at Chiefs, at Jets
Patriots: vs. Cardinals, at Bills

If you’re a Jets fan you can’t be feeling to good about things. Not only have the J.E.T.S dropped two of their last three games, but they’re also 0-3 on the West Coast this year and heading to Seattle on Sunday.

The Dolphins are in pretty good shape this week as they face a Chiefs team that is trying to run out the clock on the rest of the season, but their finale in New York is a doozy – especially if the Jets lose this weekend in Seattle. Miami has won just once in its last six trips to the Meadowlands. And while the Dolphin defense has been outstanding of late, the offense has struggled to put up points on against weaker opponents the past three weeks.

Which leads us to the Patriots. A little over a week ago I predicted New England to win the AFC East and I won’t back down now – especially not after they just gorilla-smacked the hapless Raiders in a rainstorm on Sunday. There’s no way Arizona goes into Foxboro this weekend and beats the Patriots. Zero chance. Will not happen. The Cardinals haven’t beaten a quality opponent on the road this year and their defense just allowed Tarvaris Jackson to throw four touchdowns on them at home last week. Believe it or not, Buffalo might turn out to be a tougher game than ‘Zona, only because of the elements. And considering the Pats will likely be playing for the division (and the Bills will still be starting J.P. Losman), I wouldn’t bet against them.

So here is my official prediction: Jets lose in Seattle, Dolphins beat the Chiefs, Patriots beat the Cardinals. Jets beat Miami, but Patriots beat the Bills and claim the AFC East.

Comment fodder: Who do you have winning the AFC East?

The Rams are an embarrassment

Jim HaslettRemember when Jim Haslett took over for Scott Linehan about a month ago and the Rams beat the Redskins in Washington and then crushed the Cowboys at home the very next week? Well, those wins are nothing but a distant memory.

The Jets hammered the Rams 47-3 at Giants Stadium on Sunday, but it wasn’t even that close. St. Louis trailed 40-0 at halftime, turned the ball over five times, managed only 200 total yards and were just 4 of 10 on third downs. Even when they marched into the red zone, they still couldn’t muster any points.

It was impressive how the Rams responded when Haslett was chosen as interim coach. They showed emotion, played inspired and actually resembled a football team. But their last two games have shown that the front office needs to completely blow this team up. They need a new quarterback because Marc Bulger has been a disaster and Trent Green should have retired two years ago. They need an offensive line. They need a secondary and they need a new direction.

As for the Jets, I know Brett Favre gets all the attention for the team’s turnaround this year but the defense deserves a ton of credit too. Eric Mangini has the defense playing more aggressively and unsung players like Abram Elam are stepping up big. If the Jets make the playoffs this year, Favre would have played a big part. But it’ll be the defense that will determine just how far they eventually go.

Bills starting to show their youth

Trent EdwardsThe Buffalo Bills have been one of the more surprising teams this season, so it’s easy to forget how relatively young they still are. But their 26-17 loss to the Jets on Sunday is an example of how the Bills are starting to show their inexperience.

With the Bills up 7-3 early in the first quarter, Darrelle Revis stripped quarterback Trent Edwards, which New York eventually turned into a field goal. Edwards then drove Buffalo into the red zone on their next possession, but his pass intended for Roscoe Parrish was intercepted by A Elam and returned 92-yards for a touchdown.

The Bills never recovered after that as Brett Favre and Thomas Jones expanded on the lead and eventually walked away with a sound victory.

This was the second game in row where Edwards struggled with turnovers and it again cost the Bills a chance to build on their early season success. Edwards is a good young quarterback, but he has lapses in focus and the Bills will go nowhere this year until he stops being so careless with the football. He needs to rely more on the help around him and not try to do too much.

This was an impressive win for the Jets. They survived last week against Kansas City despite Favre’s brutal play and if they continue to get great defensive efforts like they did Sunday, there’s no reason to think that NY can’t continue to compete in the AFC East.
