Skip Bayless and modern sports debate

Guys love to debate sports, but have we reached the point in time with too much sports talk? With so much sports talk and debate on TV and radio, we’re bound to be subjected to the likes of Skip Bayless. He talks so much that he’s bound to make some good points, and in some ways he’s pretty good at addressing the psychological aspect of sports. But that’s all he does. And he relies so much on unwavering opinions, which just dumbs down the debate.

Here’s a clip of Mark Cuban vs Skip Bayless, where frankly both of them make some good points. Cuban respects real sports talk that analyses the game and the strategies. Bayless loves grand proclamations about which player or team “wanted it more.”

It’s all a matter of taste I guess. Check out this profile of Skip Bayless and you’ll at least have some perspective on where this guy is coming from.

Denver Broncos All-Pro Wes Welker talks Old Spice, Stingers and NOT Peyton Manning or Tom Brady

Wes-Welker-Old-Spice

Wes Welker is a player that any fan can relate to, which is what makes him such a great pitch-man for Old Spice and the new “Unnecessary Freshness” campaign. But when you look at Welker’s career and laundry list of  accomplishments, it becomes apparent that you are looking at the body of work befitting a future NFL Hall of Famer.

I spoke to Wes about his career and his experience working with Old Spice.

Tell me about Old Spice. What’s up with the “Unnecessary Freshness” campaign?

It’s been a really cool deal. I think you’ve seen a lot of their commercials in the past and the way they are, so I was really excited to get to do all the commercials and all that stuff. We’re basically celebrating the new season and the brand’s Fresh Collection lineup and reminding fans to of the importance of “unnecessary freshness.” They can check everything out on YouTube and see all the videos and the crazy stuff like me being in a snow globe, my legs being eaten by lizards. Or some of the print stuff, where there’s a shark eating my legs. Its kinda funny when I’m shooting this because the director is like, “OK, so imagine there is a shark eating your legs right there.” I’m like, “Really — there’s gonna be a shark eating my legs?” They do a great job with it, it’s been really cool.

As a wide receiver who takes  a lot of hits, what does a “stinger” actually feel like?

You just feel like a numbness run through your body.

Oh, so it’s like a divorce?

Exactly (laughing). I guess so. I’ve been lucky enough to not experience that, hopefully I’m not on that end. I’d say that’s a good way to describe it (laughing). But no, I’d say it’s a numbness a lot of times in your shoulder or neck running through there, and you feel almost like a vibrating sensation through your arm.

Jim Harbaugh whines about read-option ruling

I guess we shouldn’t be surprised, as Jim Harbaugh wants to keep any advantage he has with Colin Kaepernick playing quarterback. But, Harbaugh is also a baby who loves to whine when he doesn’t get his way. He’s a great coach, but he cries with the best of them.

His latest antics involve the NFL’s interpretation of what is a legal hit on a quarterback in the read-option offense. Basically, as long as a quarterback is faking the run, he can be treated like a runner by the defense, and he doesn’t get the modern, over-the-top protections that the league has put in place for passers. Basically, the rules of traditional football apply. Naturally, Harbaugh responded by saying the ruling was “flawed and a bit biased.”

Manning and Broncos embarrass Ravens

Manning, Broncos stomp Ravens in opener by FOX Sports

The Broncos wanted revenge, but they got much more than that last night. Peyton Manning threw for seven touchdowns with no interceptions as he carved up the revamped Ravens defense.

How many “experts” were saying that the Ravens could be better on defense this year? The thought now seems like a joke. Of course they will get better, and it’s hard to prepare for Peyton Manning when you have a bunch of new players. But playing as a unit takes time, and the Ravens lost more than half of their defense! The results should not have been surprising.

Meanwhile, Joe Flacco was mediocre with two interceptions. It was hardly an endorsement of his monster contract.

So the Broncos have served notice that they can live up to the hype, and the Ravens have some work to do. But, just as a word of caution, you can never read too much into one NFL game. Things can change dramatically from week to week, so all is not lost for the Ravens . . . yet.
