The Heat finally traded Michael Beasley away, and they didn’t get much in return.
The Miami Heat quickly followed up their triumph in the LeBron James sweepstakes by finding a taker for Michael Beasley.
But they had to virtually give away the No. 2 overall pick from the 2008 draft to do so.
Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that the Heat agreed Thursday night to a trade that will send Beasley to the Minnesota Timberwolves, who can simply absorb Beasley into empty salary-cap space and furnish Miami with additional financial flexibility to continue the dramatic transformation of its roster.
To complete the trade, Minnesota must only part with a 2011 second-round pick to acquire Beasley. The teams have also agreed to a swap of unspecified future first-round picks.
The swap of “unspecified future first-round picks” could be substantial, depending on the details. The T-Wolves will probably be in the lottery while the Heat should be picking near the end of the first round for the rest of the decade, so it could be a meaningful move up for the Heat.
The move clears enough cap space to give LeBron, Wade and Bosh five-year max contracts, though they might take a bit less in order to fit someone like Mike Miller in under the cap. Miami is discussing a sign-and-trade for Bosh to get him an extra year and more money. It will be interesting to see if they go through with it, because it’s going to cost the Heat draft picks that could be used to build a supporting cast around its new ‘Miami Thrice.’
For the T-Wolves, assuming that aforementioned first round pick is well-protected, Beasley is a nice acquisition. He’s just 21 years old and has averaged 14-6 in his first two years in the league. He can play either forward position depending on what kind of offense and tempo the T-Wolves want to play. In the triangle offense, he could be a Lamar Odom point-forward-type.
If, by now, you haven’t read owner Dan Gilbert’s scathing open letter to Cavs fans, do so now.
Done? Wow, right?
Our esteemed publisher, Gerardo Orlando, a proud Cavs fan, wrote that it’s this kind of dedication that makes Gilbert so loved in Cleveland.
I know emotions were running high last night, but this letter doesn’t make Gilbert look very good to the objective eye. Here’s why:
1. It’s hypocritical. Gilbert blasts LeBron for his “several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up” but would have been elated had LeBron announced he was going to stay in Cleveland. Elated. Gilbert also told the AP that he thought LeBron “quit” in the playoffs against Boston and Orlando. Again, these claws are only out because LeBron spurned the Cavs. Gilbert doesn’t make these accusations until after LeBron decides to leave, and his previous silence on the matter only served to enable LeBron’s childish behavior.
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees are on the brink of trading for Mariners’ ace Cliff Lee.
Yankees GM Brian Cashman and Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik have been in constant contact over the last week, but it was only last night that the Seattle GM told Yankee officials he wanted to move quickly, possibly before the All-Star break.
The Yanks were not assured of obtaining Lee since other clubs such as the Mets, Twins and Rangers were in talks. But the Yanks were definitely making the strongest move last night, coming from seeming disinterest into the clear front-runner and last night it seemed they were all but certain to obtain the 31-year-old lefty.
In an odd twist, Lee is scheduled to pitch against the Yankees tonight in Seattle. Lee is 8-3 with a 2.34 ERA and an amazing 89 strikeouts to just six walks. He beat the Yankees twice in the World Series last year, the only two games the Yankees lost in the Fall Classic.
This would be a surprising but predictable outcome. For the past month, the Rangers, Mets and Twins were the clubs that were centered on trading for Lee. But of course, seemingly out of nowhere, Brian Cashman swoops in and nabs another stud for his all-star roster. (Lee, Sabathia, Pettitte, Burnett and Vazquez? Dear, Barbara…)
If this deal goes down, the collective heads of Yankee haters are going to explode. “Typical Yankees” they’ll say. But keep in mind that this would be a trade; the Mariners can deal with whichever team they want and if they decide that it’s the Yankees, then you can’t blame Cashman for wanting to make a deal. Yes, the Bombers have a sizeable advantage when it comes to signing and retaining free agents. But when it comes to trades they have as much to lose as anyone seeing as how they’re giving up more than money in a deal. It’s up to Zduriencik to get fair compensation for Lee and if he were smart, he’d play all of the teams against each other in order to get the best deal possible. (Don’t rule out the possibility that he’s using Cashman and the Yankees to get more out of the Rangers or Mets either.)
This isn’t a done deal and the Rangers (who were reportedly the front-runners for Lee just yesterday) could still make a play. But history tells us that if Cashman and the Yankees are involved, they’ll probably get their man.

You have to read it to believe it, but Dan Gilbert held nothing back in an open letter to fans posted on Cavs.com.
He said that LeBron “deserted” Cavs fans with a “several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up.”
He said Cavs fans “simply don’t deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.”
Then he said this:
“I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE”
Wow.
There’s much more – read the whole thing.
This is why Cavs fans love Dan Gilbert. It’s hard to imagine the Cavs making a quick comeback, but having a dedicated owner willing to spend millions of dollars is critical to success in the NBA.
Finally, Gilbert also said this:
“There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.”
I suspect we’re going to be hearing a little more about LeBron’s game 5 meltdown and the circumstances surrounding it. We should expect nothing less after reading this letter. Stay tuned . . .
UPDATE: Gilbert just told the AP that James “quit” on the Cavs during the Celtics series. Ouch! He goes on to say that “people have covered up for (James) for way too long. Tonight we saw who he really is.” Like I said, expect much more . . .
