      Sampson headed for the Bucks

      Former Indiana Head Coach Kelvin Sampson appears to be headed for an assistant position with Scott Skiles and the Milwaukee Bucks. I think it is a great move for him. His ego is such he will become a very good NBA coach. More importantly, now the NCAA can go after someone else’s phone records. Mark my words Sampson will be a head coach in the NBA in less than 5 years.

      Glad to see him land on his feet.

      Stanford Still Looking: AD Bob Bowlsby was in Philly this week to offer the job to Larry Brown. Brown rejected him as he wants a job that will not keep him from relocating and also give him a chance at a national championship. Can you understand why Jay Wright’s name has been mentioned as a future coach in the NBA.

      Others on the list are Doug Wojcik. He has done a solid job at Tulsa, but certainly has underachieved by that program’s standards over the years. Oh, he did win the CBI. I know what is that?

      Larry Krystowiak, who was just fired by the Bucks, is the latest name to be thrown out there.

      My money is on Wojcik. The former assistant at Michigan State has one of the hardest working guys in the business pulling for him, Tom Izzo.

      Nice slate of NBA games tonight

      The Suns and Mavs head home, down 2-0, for crucial Game 3’s, while the upstart Sixers host the Pistons with the series tied, 1-1. If Phoenix and Dallas can pull of wins tonight, it’s going to set up two great Game 4’s on Sunday. If they lose… well, it’s pretty much over.

      Detroit and Philly square off at 7 PM ET on ESPN2, and the Mavs/Hornets kick off ESPN’s double-header at 8 PM ET.

      Tyler Hansbrough staying in school

      Naismith POY Tyler Hansbrough has decided to return to North Carolina for his senior year.

      However, sophomores Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington will declare for the NBA draft, but will not hire agents — leaving open the possibility of their return.

      Hansbrough, a 6-foot-9 forward, averaged 22.6 points and 10.2 rebounds. He led the Tar Heels (36-3) to the winningest season in school history and the Final Four while sweeping the major national player of the year awards. He already has qualified to become the eighth player in school history to have his jersey retired.

      Hansbrough’s return wasn’t a big surprise considering he has long talked about his determination to win a national championship before he leaves school.

      This isn’t a shock considering he isn’t playing basketball just to make a lot of money someday. It probably won’t hurt his draft stock much as scouts have had three years to pick him apart and they aren’t going to find much more to complain about if he stays in school another year. Obviously, his return makes North Carolina the favorite to win the ACC again. Duke should be better, but the Tar Heels still look like the class of the conference.

      Barstool Debate: Who should the Rams pick at #2?

      Every Friday, Anthony Stalter and I are going to pose the week’s most pressing question and each pick a side. With the NFL Draft coming up tomorrow, we were going to argue about who the Miami Dolphins should take with the first overall pick, but since they’ve already made their choice (tackle Jake Long), we’ll move on to #2. Who should the Rams select? Glenn Dorsey or Chris Long? Or should they thumb their nose at Stephen Jackson or Marc Bulger and take Darren McFadden or Matt Ryan? Here’s our take…

      John Paulsen: This we know… Glenn Dorsey is a monster. He is super-quick for his size (6’2”, 297 lbs) and demands a double-team. He’s more of a pass-rushing DT, which is why he makes sense for the Rams. The team drafted Adam Carriker in the first round last season, and moved him from DE to DT, but he’s capable of playing on the outside as a run-stopper. Put the two players on the same side of the defense and the Rams D – with Leonard Little on the opposite side – will create some serious havoc. With Bulger and Jackson on the roster, the debate is between Dorsey and Long, so the question is what to do with Carriker. If the team thinks he can be effective on the outside, Dorsey is the right choice.

      Anthony Stalter: The Rams weren’t enamored with Carriker’s speed on the edge, so they made him a defensive tackle. Word is that if the Rams take Glenn Dorsey, Carriker would move back to the end position, but why? Why teach him a new position at the pro level and let him get comfortable only to move him back to the position he played in college? I understand the learning curve probably won’t be that high since he’s already familiar at end, but at 6’6, 303-pounds, he’s more suited to play inside. Long is a true end that can play the run, rush the passer and is incredibly relentless. Dorsey would be a fantastic pick, but taking Long allows Carriker to stay inside and keep developing at a single position.
