      Sunday MLB Roundup: Sabathia continues to impress

      – C.C. Sabathia looked masterful against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon. He gave up one hit, and struck out eleven in a complete game effort as the Brewers defeated the Pirates 7-0. Many have questioned the official score keeper’s decision to score an infield hit by Andy LaRoche as a single.
      Sabathia continues to impress

      Sabathia limited the Pirates to Andy LaRoche’s infield single leading off the fifth inning, on a play Milwaukee manager Ned Yost argued was an error on the pitcher, and the Brewers beat Pittsburgh 7-0 Sunday for their eighth victory in nine games.

      “He accomplished a no-hitter and wasn’t given what he deserved. That should have been a no-hitter,” Yost said. “That’s a stinking no-hitter we all got cheated from. I feel horrible for CC.”

      No-hitter or not, C.C.’s been looking sharp since joining the Brewers.

      – Jason Werth hit his third home run in two days as the Phillies defeated the Cubs 5-3 Sunday to split the series. Carlos Zambrano missed his scheduled start in order to rest his tired arm. He’ll expected to start Tuesday against the Astros. The Phillies remain one game back of the Mets in the NL East.

      – The Chicago White Sox are in a dead heat with the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central. The White Sox, who are just a half game up on the Twins, defeated the Red Sox on Sunday to avoid a three game sweep at Fenway. Jim Thome hit a two-run homer in the first inning, which tied Mickey Mantle for 14th place on the all-time home run list with 536. Unfortunately for the White Sox, the Twins were able to demolish the A’s 12-4 behind a home run and four RBI’s from Justin Morneau.

      – The New York Yankees continued to slide on Sunday, losing to the Blue Jays 6-2. Roy Halladay won his fourth consecutive start, and defeated the Yankees for the fourth time this season. It’s been a tough season for the Yanks, especially considering this is their last season at Yankee stadium.

      – Brandon Webb failed to earn his 20th victory of the season against the LA Dodgers. The Dodgers were able to hit a couple homers in the first inning, and never looked back, cruising to an 8-1 victory. The Dodgers are now two and a half games back of the D’Backs in the NL West.

      Federer looks sharp and advances in U.S. Open

      Roger Federer looked like the four-time champion that he is on Sunday as he defeated Radek Stepanek 6-3 6-3 6-2. The victory was his 30th consecutive win in the U.S. Open tournament, an amazing feature in itself. Federer, who was knocked off of the number one seed for the first time last week by Rafael Nadal, knows that this is his chance to once again prove himself to be the best. He was number one for a record 237-weeks.

      Federer advances to semifinalsAs if trying to remind himself and everyone else where he’s been and where he’s quite certain he’ll return, Roger Federer thrust his right fist overhead and pointed skyward with his index finger.

      The universal gesture for No. 1.

      As Federer made that signal, the 1970s song “Still the One” by Orleans rang out through Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday

      ESPN ranks NFL fans

      ESPN.com has ranked the fans of all 32 NFL teams. Number one isn’t too much of a surprise.

      No team is as woven into the fabric of a city. The organization’s stability has a lot to do with it, as generations of Steelers fans relate to the tradition of ownership (Rooneys), smashmouth football, quality head coaches (league-low three since 1969) and success (five Super Bowl titles). The season-ticket waiting list is extremely long and the consecutive sellout streak of 299 games, including playoffs, is unbelievable.

      Is Jeff Kent’s career over?

      The Los Angeles Daily News is reporting that the Dodgers’ second basemen Jeff Kent’s career might be over because of torn cartilage in one of his knees.

      Jeff KentKent was sent back to Los Angeles for an MRI exam after leaving Friday night’s game at Arizona with pain in his left knee. Although that exam hadn’t taken place as of game time Saturday night, club officials had a strong suspicion as to what it likely would show.

      Kent, 40, has been playing through pain from slightly torn cartilage in his knee for about a month, fully aware that the continued grind of playing baseball on an everyday basis meant there was a strong risk of additional, more painful tearing.

      That additional tearing is believed to be what took place during Friday’s game. Kent was said to be in “excruciating pain” after leaving the game, and club officials were holding out slim hope of getting him back in what is widely expected to be his final season.

      Kent has yet to announce his plans following this final season of his two-year, $18 million contract with the Dodgers. But even without the injury, it would have seemed like the perfect time to walk away. Given the injury is of the “wear-and-tear” variety and not unexpected for a man of Kent’s age playing such a demanding sport, it is difficult to imagine him playing another year.

      The guy has proved to be an asshole during his career, but there’s no doubt Kent has been one of the best hitters over the last decade. He’s never won a ring, but he’s accomplished a lot with the bat. (Of course, some will note that Kent greatly benefited from having Barry Bonds protect him in the lineup for so many seasons.)

      ECU shocks Virginia Tech 27-22 on blocked punt

      Perhaps the biggest upset in college football’s opening weekend came Saturday when East Carolina shocked No. 17 Virginia Tech 27-22. The Pirates returned a blocked punt for a touchdown with just under two minutes left to play to pull off the upset.

      It was over when… T.J. Lee blocked a punt for ECU and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown with 1:52 left to give the Pirates the 27-22. lead.
      Gameball goes to… Patrick Pinkney, who threw for 211 yards and 1 TD and ran for another score for ECU — and more importantly threw zero INTs.
      Stat of the game… 17. The Hokies had their 17-game winning streak broken in games in which they blocked a kick.

      Amazing. Frank Beamer’s special teams units are always some of the best in the nation, so it was a surprise to see VA Tech lose this way. Parity has slowly crept its way into college football and it has made the games more meaningful and exciting.
