      Greek team prepared to make big offer to Kobe?

      SportsByBrooks has a post about the Greek franchise Olympiacos (who recently poached Josh Childress from the Hawks) and how they want to sign Kobe to a big deal.

      Guess what? It appears that Olympiacos is, in fact, serious, as reports are surfacing that the club is preparing an offer for Kobe Bryant. We’re talking 60 million Euro (about $83 million right now) over 3 years. THE HOOP has more details on the perks of the contract, and they are pretty damned nice:

      In that contract there will be an incredible list of benefits, a villa in the Mediterranean Sea, pay all the taxes at the expense of the club, to pay the bills for the staff and for a private boat for Kobe Bryant. The article also says that they are planning to form Olympiakos into an NBA style club with a court that fits 15-20 thousand seats and a private jet for the team.

      This is an interesting story, no doubt, but I don’t think Kobe is going anywhere. He wants to win a ring without Shaq and he’ll keep trying until he retires.

      Besides, if the US Dollar EVER gains back its strength against the Euro, there is no way that these European clubs will be able to offer up enough scratch to get a star to make the jump.

      Lions to put Kitna on IR

      It’s all right there in the title. The Lions have apparently decided that Jon Kitna’s season is over.

      With no trades in the works, the Lions decided this morning to place quarterback Jon Kitna on injured reserve. The decision should be announced later today.

      Kitna suffered a back injury in the first half of the Lions’ 34-7 loss to Chicago two weeks ago. He did not play last week against Minnesota and did not travel with the team.

      Kitna, who has muscular damage in his lower back, finishes the season with 758 yards passing, five touchdowns and five interceptions. He never seemed to buy fully into new coordinator Jim Colletto’s offense, and, with one year left on his contract, may have played his last game as a Lion.

      Kitna was always a fairly reliable fantasy option, but now that his season is finished, it looks like the beginning of the Dan Orlovsky era…for now. This has to be a slight downgrade for Calvin Johnson and a big downgrade for Roy Williams. Calvin played pretty well against the Vikings, and young QBs have a tendency to lock onto their favorite target and throw to him over and over, which means that Roy may be left out in the cold.

      Toledo player catches 20 passes against Michigan, then celebrates by getting arrested

      It’s not every year the University of Toledo beats Michigan in football. So when it happened this past weekend, two Rockets players decided to celebrate…hard.

      Receiver Nick Moore was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct intoxication outside of a Ryno’s Bar & Grill, while defensive end Albertson Alexandre was charged with obstructing official business.

      Moore, a senior and team captain, and Jason Link of Columbus were involved in a fistfight at 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the establishment’s parking lot, according to police. Link was also charged with disorderly conduct intoxication. Moore and Link were intoxicated and showed signs of being so, the report said.

      According to the police report, when police arrived, they deployed mace to disperse a crowd of 30-40 people.

      Alexandre, a junior from Miami, repeatedly approached the officers, ignoring numerous commands to leave the area, according to the report. After approaching an officer and tapping his firearm while trying to get his attention, Alexandre was taken into custody, according to police.

      UT coach Tom Amstutz declined to comment yesterday through a university spokesman. In a statement, UT athletic director Mike O’Brien said, “We are still gathering information about the incident. We will not make any further comment on this situation until we are satisfied that we have all the pertinent facts.”

      If Alexandre, 22, is convicted, he faces a maximum of 90 days in jail and up to a $750 fine. Moore, 22, and Link, 27, each face a maximum of a $100 fine if convicted. The three men are scheduled to appear this morning in Toledo Municipal Court.

      Both players started for the Rockets in Saturday’s win. Moore had a school-record 20 catches for 162 receiving yards. Alexandre had five tackles, including a two-yard tackle for loss.

      If you can’t celebrate beating Michigan by tapping on a police officers’ firearm, then I don’t know what’s appropriate. I will say this though, considering both the basketball and football programs have been accused of being involved in point shaving and gambling scandals over the past two years, those boys from Toledo sure know how to keep things interesting around campus.

      2008 NBA Preview: #28 New York Knicks

      Offseason Movement: New head coach Mike D’Antoni needed a point guard to run his up-tempo attack, so the Knicks signed Chris Duhon to fill the role. They probably would have liked to do better, but when you’re $40 million over the cap and have a roster full of players that nobody wants, you’re options are limited. However, Duhon is a pass-first floor general who could surprise.
      Keep Your Eye On: Mike D’Antoni’s blood pressure
      With Zach Randolph and Eddy Curry still on the roster (and penciled into the starting lineup) it’s not clear how D’Antoni will be able to effectively run his frenetic style of offense. Both players are slow-footed and neither guy is known to be a willing passer, two huge no-no’s in D’Antoni’s system. One player who should thrive is forward David Lee, who might be able to work his way into the starting lineup sooner rather than later.
      The Big Question: Is this a lost cause?
      Even with Stephon Marbury’s monster contract ($22 million) coming off the books next summer, the team is still in salary cap hell until the summer of 2010 unless they can rid themselves of Randolph ($14.7 million) or Curry ($9.7 million) before then. D’Antoni will bring energy to New York, but how patient will Knick fans be? It’s going to take a while to remake this roster, so will D’Antoni live to see it happen?
      Outlook: The Knicks do have some talent on this roster. The aforementioned Lee and Duhon are unselfish players that are a good fit for what D’Antoni is trying to do. Jamal Crawford is a terrific scorer, and if he buys into the system (by passing up questionable shots to create opportunities for his teammates), he could have a nice season. Nate Robinson and Quentin Richardson have the potential to thrive as well. The wildcard is rookie SF Danilo Gallinari. As the first pick of the D’Antoni era, it’s crucial that he’s not a bust. The Knicks best lineup might consist of Duhon and Crawford in the backcourt, Richardson and Gallnari in the frontcourt, and Lee at center. They’d be undersized, but if everyone bought in, that might be a fun lineup to watch.

      John Madden, you sir, are no Brett Favre

      John Madden has worked 476 NFL games in a row. But that streak will end this Sunday after he decided that taking another cross-country trip by bus was too much and won’t call the Seahawks-Bucs game in Tampa.

      The 72-year-old Sunday Night Football analyst, who travels by bus because of a fear of flying, will take a break to spend time with his family instead of making three straight cross country trips, NBC said Monday.

      Madden went from Jacksonville, Fla., to San Diego last week; he would have had to return to Florida for this Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay. There’s no Sunday Night Football game the following weekend, so Madden would have then headed home to the Bay Area.

      Cris Collinsworth, normally a part of NBC’s studio show, will fill in for Madden.
