Pacer fan angers Chris Paul, loses game for his team

Over at The Basketball Jones, a reader (and a Chris Paul fan) sent in a story about how he indirectly lost his favorite team — the Pacers — a game.

I was out in Indy sitting first row behind the scorer’s table, chatting it up with players left and right (they were, however, ignoring me). The P’s had a solid lead and CP wasn’t showing up much directly on offense, missing several jumpers. He came to check in at around 3:36, and I was in complete Pacers mode. Without thinking, I murmured, “CP ain’t shit.” He quickly turned around and said, “What?” High off the fact that he even acknowledged me, I said, “Yeah, you’re lucky T.J.’s (Ford) not playing.” He replied, “Yeah, I prayed for that last night,” and rolled his eyes and laughed. I was in complete disarray, and said to the man that I had so passionately spoken in MVP support for last year: “You shouldn’t have been mentioned for MVP last year, Kobe is way better than you.” He laughed and walked off. My friend gave me the “what have you done” look.

CP, the passing machine, stopped passing then. He began to shoot every time he got the ball and took over the game going 6/8 and scoring 11 points in the final 3:36. I was standing and cheering passionately every time Granger hit a big shot and he was looking my way.

After a timeout, he walked from the bench to halfcourt smirking and smiling, staring me down the whole way. I gave him a thumbs down and shook my head. With 26 seconds left he drove, danced around with the ball and hit West for a wide open jumper to win it. I thought the game was over, but it wasn’t.

CP went over, took a photo with someone, then walked in my direction. I stood up. He stopped directly in front of the scorers table and, pointing a solid finger, and said in LeBron fashion, “It’s your fault. It’s your fault.” My legs began to shake as my star crush walked away.

What did I do.

The box score and play-by-play check out, so if true (and entirely accurate), this is an amazing story. It just goes to show how quickly and easily an athlete can find motivation. The NBA regular season is often called a “grind,” and it can be tough for players to get emotionally inspired for every game of an 82-game season. It sounds like this fan (and his big mouth, I’m sure he’d be the first to admit) gave Chris Paul the motivation to break out of his funk and put the Hornets over the top.

Obviously, most of us would have the good sense not to heckle a guy like Chris Paul, but how would you feel if this had happened to you? If CP3 came over, pointed at me and said “it’s your fault,” I might not leave the house for two weeks.

Bill Cowher turns down Jets

Jet fans hoping that the firing of Eric Mangini would lead to the hiring of Bill Cowher will be disappointed to know that the former Steelers head coach will not be in green and white next year.

Bill CowherFormer Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who rejected a chance to become head coach of the Browns last weekend, is not going to interview for the head coaching position of the New York Jets, according to multiple sources.

Cowher, according to a source, has been contacted by the Jets. Although he is interested in the Jets job, he told the team he would not be a candidate because he would like to bring in his own personnel director. Jets owner Woody Johnson plans to keep Mike Tannenbaum as his general manager after firing Eric Mangini as head coach Monday.

With Tannenbaum as the general manager, Cowher is willing to pass on the Jets opportunity, stay in broadcasting for another year and wait to return to coaching in 2010.

Cowher has told friends the Jets job interested him for several reasons. First, Cowher would love to coach in the New York market. Second, two of his daughters are either going to school or working in the New York-New Jersey area.

Cowher does plan to coach in 2010. In 2009, though, he was only willing to return if every situation was right for him. He wanted to have a two-year break from coaching to be with family and recharge.

I think several hundred Jet fans just dove head first off the Hudson Bridge.

Maybe Johnson can convince Tannenbaum to take another position within the front office and then give Cowher complete control. Although to be fair, Tennenbaum has landed D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold and Leon Washington in recent drafts, so he’s not a complete dud as a general manager. (Of course his latest first round pick, Vernon Gholston, looks like a complete bust considering he was inactive for most of the season because he can’t learn the playbook.)

The Jets will probably wind up with one of the hot coordinators considering they already have a GM. Like Cowher, one would think that Marty Schottenheimer would want complete control as well, so I bet he passes on the Jets too if offered the position.

UPDATE: The Daily News is reporting that Cowher and the Jets will now sit down to discuss the team’s head coaching vacancy. There’s hope yet Jet fans.

Who’s stupid idea was this?

Apparently the 2010 Pro Bowl will be played one week before the 2010 Super Bowl.

The Pro Bowl will be played one week before the Super Bowl in 2010 and both games will be staged in Dolphin Stadium, a person directly involved in the decision told The Associated Press on Monday.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the NFL has not announced the move, but Hawaii’s governor and Honolulu’s mayor both confirmed the situation later Monday.

“While I am disappointed the Pro Bowl likely will not be played in Hawaii in 2010, I respect the NFL’s decision to play the post season all-star game in the same city as the Super Bowl, one week before the Super Bowl, on a one-year test basis,” Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle said in a statement.

It’s not a new notion to have the game moved up to take place between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl. The NFL has discussed it multiple times in recent years, and commissioner Roger Goodell told the AP last month that having the game precede the Super Bowl would avoid a “somewhat anticlimactic” ending to the season.

“Plans for future Pro Bowls are not final, but we have stated publicly several times that we are giving strong consideration to moving the Pro Bowl to the week before the Super Bowl,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said. “We also have been exploring playing future Pro Bowls at the site of the Super Bowl as well as in Honolulu.”

So what happens with those players that were voted into the Pro Bowl but are also playing in the Super Bowl? They obviously can’t play in the Pro Bowl and risk injury, so they just lose out on the honor of making the All-Star game? (Not that it’s much of an honor for players these days.)

This is a stupid idea and it’s sad that Hawaii is going to lose even more tourism that year than it already has because of the bad economy.

Willis McGahee blames coaching staff for injury-plagued season

Willis McGahee sounded off in an interview Monday with Sporting News Radio on why he’s had issues with injuries this year. Apparently the Ravens’ coaching staff is to blame.

Willis McGaheeOn why he hasn’t been healthy this year: “I tried to do something different this year. They wanted me to come in lighter and I tried to come in lighter, so I relaxed on the weights because the more weights I lift the heavier I get… so I relaxed on that and just tried to work on conditioning, but it didn’t work out so well this year. So I’m just going go ahead and do what I’ve been doing for the past couple of years and just work out and be Willis McGahee.”

On his diminished production: “Yeah, I tried to be someone else’s running back this year and it didn’t work out.”

On if he felt like he needed to change his game: “Naw, I didn’t want to change it, but when you have a new coach and they’ve got a perception of you, you’ve got to try and change to stay on the good side of them.”

On his thoughts on the future, offseason: “I don’t know what this offseason is going to bring. It’s been a crazy year for me with the talks of me not being there next year but regardless, I’m just going to go out there and play for me… I can’t play for nobody else but me.”

How about playing for your teammates, your fans and your coaches, Willis? Is that too much to ask?

Talk about bad timing. The Ravens are trying to prepare for a road playoff game and this selfish idiot decides to bring a little controversy to the table. Why say anything about the injuries? Why not say, “You know what? The injuries were unfortunate this year but they’re just part of the game. The only thing that matters is winning in Miami.”

Is that so hard?

Alabama suspends best offensive lineman for Sugar Bowl

Alabama head coach Nick Saban suspended offensive tackle Andre Smith for the upcoming Sugar Bowl for violating team rules. Smith is highly regarded as ‘Bama’s best offensive lineman and a future top 10 NFL Draft pick.

“The University of Alabama, the team and the football program are more important than any individual player,” Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said in a released statement today. “Every one on our team depends on each other to be responsible, to make good choices and decisions relative to their actions.”

Saban did not specify Smith’s violation leading up to Friday night’s game against No. 7 Utah.

The junior is expected to be one of the top players selected in the NFL draft if he opts to skip his final season at Alabama. Smith has been noncommittal about his future plans, but Saban offered a hint in his statement that the player wouldn’t be back.

“Andre Smith has done an outstanding job in our program as a person, student and a player, and we will do all we can as an institution to support him in all future endeavors,” Saban said.

An instant starter with the Tide, Smith has allowed only one sack this season and seven during his 38-game career.

He won the Southeastern Conference’s Jacobs Blocking Trophy as a sophomore and was a finalist for the Lombardi Award this season.

One can’t help but wonder how this will affect the Tide’s game plan for Utah. ‘Bama definitely had the edge (and might still have the edge) up front, but maybe the Utes will overload one side and bring added pressure on quarterback John Parker Wilson.

Utah’s defense is quick and can fly to the football. Not having to get around Smith will be a huge advantage for them.
