      Who is Mr. Clutch in the NBA?

      John Schuhmann of NBA.com wrote an interesting article last week that looks at how players perform in “the clutch” (i.e. the last five minutes of a game with a margin of five points or less).

      So who is Mr. Clutch? The man in the picture.

      Manu Ginobili has the highest true shooting percentage of any player in the last five seasons. He’s not a particularly good shooter (44%) in the clutch, but he gets to the line a ton and makes his free throws at a high rate (86%). Mehmet Okur is second and Steve Nash third.

      You also might notice that there’s no Bryant, James, Wade or Carmelo Anthony in the top 10. They’re a little further down the list. James ranks 12th, Anthony ranks 22nd, Wade ranks 28th and Bryant ranks 38th.

      Who has the biggest difference in overall TS% and clutch TS%? Or, in other words, who steps up their game the most in the clutch?

      Okur is tops in that category, trailed by T.J. Ford and Carlos Boozer. Ginobili is fourth.

      Who’s shooting declines the most in the clutch?

      Kirk Hinrich is first, followed by Pau Gasol and Hedo Turkoglu.

      Where do our big four stand? James and Anthony shoot better in the clutch, while Wade and Bryant do not.

      Can TCU’s Andy Dalton overcome past woes against Utah?

      In his past two games against Utah, TCU quarterback Andy Dalton has zero touchdown passes and six interceptions. Both of those games resulted in losses for the Horned Frogs, including last year’s 13-10 defeat in Salt Lake City.

      But Dalton has played with more confidence during the past month than he has at any point in his career and the TCU offense is starting to match the play of its outstanding defense. The Frogs rank eighth in total offense, sixth in scoring offense and also have the sixth best running game in the nation.

      That said, the Utes’ defense has served as kryptonite for Dalton in previous years, so can he put those struggles behind him and keep TCU’s BCS bowl bid hopes alive?

      Utah ranks 18th in total defense and 13th in pass defense, but they haven’t played an offense even remotely as potent as TCU. And for as good as the Utes’ defense has been this season, they’re susceptible against the run and that’s the Frogs’ bread and butter.

      With so much on the line in this matchup, both teams need to take the pressure off their quarterbacks and run the football. But what will be interesting to watch unfold is which defense will stop their opponents’ running game first and force either Dalton or true freshman Jordan Wynn to beat them through the air.

      This has the makings of a great game.

      Hot Stove Rumors: Lackey, Guerrero & Doumit

      The Red Sox are interested in John Lackey
      According to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald, the Red Sox met with John Lackey’s agent at the GM meetings last week in Chicago. Lackey, 31, went 11-8 this season with a 3.83 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 139 strikeouts but he also battled elbow issues.

      The Rangers are showing interest in Vladimir Guerrero
      Already stacked with hitters, the Rangers have shown interest in free agent DH Vlad Guerrero according to FOXSports.com. If Texas can afford him, Vlad would be an ideal fit just based on his .394 batting average in 50 career games at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

      The Pirates may be open to trading Ryan Doumit
      According to FOXSports.com, the Pirates are considering trading catcher Ryan Doumit, who hit .250 last season with 10 home runs and 38 RBI in 280 at-bats. He is set to earn $3.55 million in 2010 and $5.1 million in 2011 and could draw interest from several teams.

      Mariners interested in Harden?
      According to the Seattle Times, the Mariners have interest in Rich Harden, who went 9-9 with a 4.09 ERA and 1.34 WHIP for the Cubs last season. Despite battling injuries, he was successful in five seasons in the AL with the A’s.

      Thome returning to Chicago?
      According to the Chicago Tribune, Jim Thome said that he would love to return to the White Sox, who traded him to the Dodgers at the deadline last season. Thome is a Peoria, Illinois native.

      LeBron wants everyone to give up the #23

      In his infinite wisdom, LeBron James has decided that Michael Jordan hasn’t received enough recognition, so he’s suggesting that every player with the #23 change it as an homage to His Airness.

      “I just think what Michael Jordan has done for the game has to be recognized some way soon,” James said. “There would be no LeBron James, no Kobe Bryant, no Dwyane Wade if there wasn’t Michael Jordan first.

      “He can’t get the logo [Hall of Famer Jerry West’s silhouette adorns the NBA’s logo], and if he can’t, something has to be done. I feel like no NBA player should wear 23. I’m starting a petition, and I’ve got to get everyone in the NBA to sign it. Now, if I’m not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it.”

      “If you see 23, you think about Michael Jordan,” James said, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “You see game-winning shots, you think about Michael Jordan; you see guys fly through the air, you think about Michael Jordan; you see fly kicks, you think about Michael Jordan. He did so much, it has to be recognized, and not just by putting him in the Hall of Fame.”

      Jordan hasn’t received enough recognition? Um, okay. Does anyone else feel that he’s been slighted somehow?

      Other than LeBron, there are 12 players that wear the #23: Kevin Martin, Jason Richardson, Marcus Camby, Lou Williams, Martell Webster, Toney Douglas, C.J. Watson, Stephen Graham, Jodie Meeks, Devin Brown, B.J. Mullens and Wes Matthews.

      It sounds like James is bitter that the NBA won’t change its time-honored logo to feature Jordan instead of Jerry West, so he’s putting together this silly petition to “honor” his hero.

      This quote is the most telling…

      “Now, if I’m not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it.”

      So are the players honoring Jordan or honoring Lebron’s homage to Jordan?

      Is it just me or is this an unnecessary waste of time?
