Martz a candidate to become Bears’ next O-coordinator

According to a report by the Chicago Sun Times, Mike Martz is a candidate to become the Bears’ next offensive coordinator.

”Martz would love to work with Jay Cutler,” said the source, who cited the close relationship between Smith and Martz in sharing the information.

Smith is expected to stay with the Bears in 2010 because of more than $10 million in walking-away money.
But offensive coordinator Ron Turner and at least part of his staff could be another story. The Bears (4-6) purged their defensive staff last offseason, and it might be the offense’s turn in January as Smith makes a final effort to turn around a franchise headed toward its third straight season of missing the playoffs. Since Turner was hired in 2005 after the firing of

Terry Shea, the offensive staff has been untouched. In that same span, Smith has changed seven defensive position coaches and moved the title of defensive coordinator from Ron Rivera to Bob Babich to himself.

This makes sense considering that the Bears have no interest in running the ball. Martz has always been able to get the most out of his quarterbacks (Kurt Warner, Marc Bulger, Jon Kitna, etc.) and could work well with Cutler. Of course, that could be a recipe for disaster given Martz and Cutler’s egos.

Still, Martz pass-happy system would be a great fit for Cutler’s big arm. But even if the Bears do land Martz, they still need to figure out a way to rebuild the offensive line or else Cutler will continue to struggle no matter what system he’s in.

This is an intriguing rumor.

Line of the Night (11/25): Kevin Durant

The Thunder beat the Jazz last night in Utah, 104-94, behind Kevin Durant’s 28 points, eight assists, five rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot. Oklahoma City is improved, but this is a game that the Jazz *should* win. They have two All-Star caliber players in Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer, along with a slew of good role players. The Thunder should not be beating the Jazz on their home court.

But they did. Durant’s line was very nice, especially the eight assists. He’s not a great playmaker, but he’s getting better. Jeff Green added 19 points, six rebounds and five assists, and is turning into a very nice complementary player for KD.

2009 Week 13 College Football Point Spreads

It’s rivalry week!

No. 3 Texas at Texas A&M, 8:00PM ET, Thursday
Texas A&M have beaten Colt McCoy two of the last three seasons and will look to spoil Texas’s shot at a national title when the teams meet on Thanksgiving. The only problem is that the Aggies have the 110th ranked pass defense in the country and McCoy could torch them repeatedly. With so much on the line, don’t count on Texas overlooking their in-state rivals on Thursday.
Odds: Texas –21.

No. 2 Alabama at Auburn, 2:30PM ET, Friday
Auburn will be looking to ruin Alabama’s national title hopes by knocking off the Crimson Tide in the teams’ annual Iron Bowl meeting. Auburn hopes its spread offense and 11th best running game will be successful against ‘Bama’s top ranked defense.
Odds: Alabama –10.

Nevada at Boise State, 10:00PM ET, Friday
Even there’s any team that could ruin Boise State’s bid for a national title it’s Nevada, who has only lost by a combined nine points to the Broncos the past two years. The Wolf Pack have won eight in a row and could snag a share of the WAC title with a win on Boise’s blue turf this Friday. How will Boise’s defense stack up to the nation’s top ranked rushing attack?
Odds: Boise State –14.

Florida State at No. 1 Florida, 3:30PM Saturday
Tim Tebow will be playing his final home game of his collegiate career on Saturday when the Gators host Bobby Bowden’s Seminoles. Florida has won 21 straight games, but it needs two more victories to secure a spot in the national title game. The Gators have won the past five meetings vs. the Seminoles and lead the all-time series 32-19-2.
Odds: Florida –24.5.

A sign of things to come? ND nixes Weis’ recruiting trip

Charlie Weis has been informed that his West Coast recruiting trip has been canceled and that he’ll return to South Bend following the Irish’s game with Stanford on Saturday.

From FOX Sports.com:

Athletic director Jack Swarbrick said Tuesday during a taping of his radio show for WLS Radio 890 in Chicago, which normally airs on Saturday, that Weis will fly back with the team.

Weis had said Sunday he planned to stay on the West Coast recruiting, just as he had last year when he and Swarbrick met to discuss his future after the regular-season finale at USC.

A message seeking comment was left for Swarbrick on his cell phone Tuesday evening by The Associated Press. Swarbrick’s comments became public after Weis’ weekly news conference on Tuesday.

Weis wasn’t in a reflective mood at what could be the final weekly news conference at his alma mater. Two days after saying he couldn’t argue if Notre Dame officials decided to fire him with a 6-5 record, Weis set the tone with his opening comment: “I have a news flash. We have a football game this Saturday evening against Stanford, so let’s see if we can’t talk about that,” he said.

The writing is on the wall: Weis is done in South Bend regardless of how the team does this week at Stanford.

Red Sox targeting Roy Halladay

According to a report by the New York Daily News, the Red Sox are targeting Blue Jays’ ace Roy Halladay.

If the Red Sox are serious about dealing for Halladay in the next two weeks, the Yankees will likely have their chance to get involved in the sweepstakes for the Blue Jays ace, although it will take a package of top prospects – as well as a sizeable contract extension for Halladay, who has a full no-trade clause – to get a deal done.

To land Halladay, Boston would likely have to give up Clay Buchholz, the organization’s top young pitcher, as well as Casey Kelly, the pitcher/shortstop who signed with the Red Sox in 2008 after being recruited by Tennessee to play quarterback. Red Sox GM Theo Epstein is said to be smitten with Kelly, which could be a sticking point in talks with Toronto if Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos insists on the 20-year-old being included in a deal.

The Yankees would love to acquire Halladay, although Cashman has been reluctant to deal away top prospects such as Austin Jackson and Jesus Montero for a player he would then have to sign for more than $100 million, such as Halladay. Toronto would also likely require either Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain in a deal.

Halladay, Josh Beckett and Jon Lester would form one of the best top 3’s in all of baseball. But is it worth it for Epstein to give up Buchholz and Kelly in a deal with no guarantees that Halladay will re-sign once he becomes a free agent at the end of the 2010 season? One would think that “The Doc” would want to re-sign with a contender like Boston, but again, there are no guarantees and Boston might lose a couple valuable prospects for just one year of Halladay.

We’ll see if this report has any teeth to it over the next couple of weeks. Storylines like these are created all the time around the winter meetings and some are just fabricated rumors.
