Kings set franchise record for consecutive wins

Los Angeles Kings

Down 3-0 to the Red Wings at the start of the second period, the Kings magically rallied to tie the score. With 2:21 left to play, the Kings’ Michal Handzus suddenly knocked in his second goal of the game to help the team win their ninth straight — a franchise record.

From ESPN.com:

Alexander Frolov, Handzus and Ryan Smyth scored in the second period, and Jonathan Quick made 20 saves in his NHL-leading 34th victory. The Kings surpassed the Second Six franchise’s eight-game winning streaks established by Wayne Gretzky’s 1991-92 team and the 1972-73 squad.

Los Angeles needed just two shootout victories to establish this mark with a roster that’s only now discovering what it can do. After a midseason swoon that dropped them from first place in the Western Conference to the middle of the pack, the Kings have moved back up to third with their 11th victory in 12 games.

“We have a lot of confidence right now, and we know that if we stick to our game, most nights we will be successful,” said Handzus, who also had an assist to give him six points in the last two games. “We knew we didn’t play well in the first period. … We decided not to try and hit a home run. We just wanted to try and score the first goal and go from there. It’s great, and a great comeback for us.”

I was at this game and it was one of the most exciting turnarounds I’ve ever seen. The Staples Center was absolutely lifeless for the first period, stunned by the Red Wings’ instantaneous three goals. Truth be told, since the Kings were coming off a hard-fought victory against the Ducks just last night, I expected them to lose. The team just looked drained, so I resigned myself to leaving after the second period if they hadn’t scored. To everyone’s surprise, they beat the talented Red Wings, simply by turning up the intensity.

Goal.com’s Top 10 Goals In The European Championships

While most sports fans won’t give American soccer the time of day, most are impressed by the competition in the European leagues. Every four years, several nations enter the UEFA European Football Championship for a shot at glory. Given the level of play, the tournament has seen its share of spectacular goals since 1960. Obviously, most Americans have never seen this footage. Thankfully, Goal.com has put together a nice list of those shots along with links to the YouTube videos. It’s worth a look, if only to get you fired up for the World Cup.

Reggie Wayne re-aggravates knee injury

As if the Colts needed any more injury issues, receiver Reggie Wayne left practice 20 minutes early on Friday after re-aggravating a knee injury that he’s battled all season.

From ESPN.com:

He’s still expected to play in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

The four-time Pro Bowl receiver left practice 20 minutes early after aggravating an injured right knee.

Coach Jim Caldwell said Wayne hurt the soft tissue below his kneecap. Wayne is listed as probable and Caldwell plans on him playing against the New Orleans Saints. Wayne got through the injury most of the season.

Even though there’s no concern of Wayne missing the game, this has been a frustrating week for the Colts in terms of injuries. Dwight Freeney is still listed as questionable after not being able to practice the past two weeks and now Wayne re-aggravates a knee injury two days before the Super Bowl.

But hey, such as life in the NFL – no player is 100% right now.

Here is some Super Bowl commercial hype

We all know that aside from the big game, the hype that surrounds the Super Bowl every year includes the TV commercials, on which millions of dollars are spent each year as companies try to one-up each other.

Comedy.com put together a countdown of the 50 funniest Super Bowl commercials, and it’s well worth a few minutes (or, errrrrr, an hour) of your work day to look through them and laugh in your cubicle.

And for the record, I completely agree about those E-Trade spots being #1. Those talking babies never get old, especially when the one on the right starts singing that Mister Mister song. Awesome. Anyway, here is a link. Enjoy, and of course, enjoy the game….
