      Lindsey Vonn wins gold in downhill

      Despite battling an injured right shin, American Lindsey Vonn took home the gold medal in women’s Olympic downhill on Wednesday. Downhill is the first of five races that Vonn plans to compete in during the Winter Games.

      Vonn was hurt Feb. 2 during pre-Olympic practice in Austria and had hardly skied over the past two weeks.

      Still, as the two-time defending overall World Cup champion and the winner of five of the six downhills this season, she was an overwhelming favorite.

      Vonn increased her lead at the first three checkpoints, although she lost nearly two tenths on the bottom after getting knocked off balance as she went over a small bump just before the finish.

      What’s remarkable about Vonn’s performance is not only was she injured, but due to bad whether in Whistler of the past week she and the other competitors also only received one downhill training session, which was before the race. Plus, the course was extremely bumpy so for her to still win a gold medal despite having to overcome several obstacles is impressive.

      Tiger Woods set to speak publicly on Friday

      According to ESPN.com, Tiger Woods will end his three-month silence and speak to the media on Friday, although he’s not expected to answer any questions. It will be his first public appearance since November 27 when he crashed his SUV into a tree outside his Florida home.

      A unique twist to the appearance is that it will come during the Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona, which is the PGA’s first big event of the year. Accenture was the first sponsor to drop Woods when details started to emerge about his sexual exploits

      “It was a matter of timing,” Steinberg said.

      When asked if Woods’ appearance could have waited until after Accenture’s tournament, he replied, “No.”

      It wouldn’t be right to assume that Woods has ulterior motives behind making a statement this week, but it is interesting that Accenture’s tournament coincidences with Tiger’s public appearance. If he did want to stick it to Accenture for dropping him, stealing some attention away from the tournament would be a good way to go about it.

      It’s highly unlikely that we’ll get more than an apology from Woods on Friday, although it’ll be interesting to hear what his intentions are for returning to the links.

      Miami hasn’t offered Beasley…yet

      According to Chad Ford’s source in the Suns organization, the Heat aren’t serious in their bid for Amare Stoudemire.

      Still, sources close to the negotiations say that, right now, Cleveland is the front-runner. Why? Because the Heat have yet to offer the Suns a deal that would beat the Cavs’ offer of Zydrunas Ilgauskas and J.J. Hickson. One source familiar with the negotiations told ESPN.com that the Heat have yet to offer Michael Beasley or either of their two first-round picks.

      “I’m not sure Miami is willing to pay the price for Amare,” a Suns source told ESPN.com. “We have to get something for him. We’re not giving him away. If Miami gets serious, then I think they would get him. But right now, they are not showing they’re serious.”

      Is there a possibility Stoudemire won’t be traded at all?

      “It’s possible,” the Suns source said. “We haven’t been blown away with an offer yet.”

      I’m sure the Heat would like to acquire Stoudemire without including Beasley, but with Stoudemire likely opting out of his deal this summer, there’s no upside for the Suns to just dump his contract. The Heat have two first round picks (their own and Toronto’s) — would the Suns would move Amare for two middling first rounders?

      Another aspect of this Amare love triangle is Miami’s desire to sign LeBron James this offseason. If they let the Cavs acquire Amare, there’s a better chance that LeBron will stay in Cleveland long-term. In other words, if they miss out on Amare, they may very well miss out on LeBron as well.

      Nate Robinson headed to Boston?

      Knicks beat writer Alan Hahn just tweeted that Nate Robinson has been traded to the Celtics, likely for Eddie House. Meanwhile, Adrian Wojnarowski says that it’s not a done deal.

      Robinson has been in and out of Mike D’Antoni’s doghouse all season, mainly because he doesn’t play point guard the way that D’Antoni wants him to. However, he has posted a career high in assist ratio (the percentage of a player’s possessions that end in an assist) with 21.3%, so he has improved in that area of the game. Conversely, his turnover ratio — 10.1% — is his highest since his rookie season, so that’s a problem.

      The Celtics are just going to ask him to come off the bench and score, and he should be very productive in that role. His PER (17.95) is #11 amongst point guards and scoring has never been a problem. He is one of the league’s best athletes and should add significant punch to the Celtics’ rotation.

      Can Stallworth make an impact for the Ravens?

      Desperate to give quarterback Joe Flacco more weapons in the passing game, the Ravens signed receiver Donte’ Stallworth to a one-year, $900,000 contract. The deal also includes $300,000 in playing time incentives, according to ESPN.com.

      Baltimore is obviously hurting at receiver. Two of the Ravens’ top three leaders in receptions last year were Ray Rice and Todd Heap. Kelley Washington and Mark Clayton finished with only 34 receptions last year and neither receiver cracked the 500-yard mark. In his seven-year career, Stallworth has averaged over 42 receptions a season, which would have placed him second in that category last year behind Derrick Mason among Baltimore receivers.

      That said, Stallworth didn’t play a down last year after being suspended for striking and killing a pedestrian with his car in Miami. Plus, the last time he was even semi-productive was three years ago in New England when he caught 46 passes for 697 yards and three touchdowns. He caught just 17 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown in 11 games with Cleveland in 2008.

      Stallworth probably won’t make much of an impact in Baltimore this year and chances are the team isn’t done trying to upgrade the position either. But at the very least, it’s hard not to like this signing more than the Bengals’ decision to ink Matt Jones earlier this week. At least Stallworth still has something that resembles speed.
