3,497 words about Rasheed Wallace

Hate Rasheed Wallace or find him interesting? Check out Bill Simmons’ latest column, “Smoke and Mirrors,” which is dedicated entirely to the man he calls “Sheed.” I think it’s one of his best pieces ever, but the funniest line came from one of his buddies.

Sheed caused me to e-mail my buddy Hench in December just to ask whether he remembered seeing Sheed run harder than half-speed even once. Hench’s response: “I’ve yet to see Sheed make a fast-twitch move that would have spilled a beverage if he was carrying one on the court.”

Nice one, Hench.

Shanahan shoots down Haynesworth trade rumors

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan dismissed the notion that the team will trade Albert Haynesworth in the offseason.

From AOL NFL Fanhouse.com:

On trading Albert Haynesworth: “There is nothing to clarify. It is just speculation. He’s part of the organization. I am just looking for him to come in and work and be like everyone else. No, we’re not going to trade him at all, unless someone gives us something we would have to consider — that’s pretty standard with any player on your roster. He’s a pretty smart guy. He’s really talented. I think I can get that out of him.”

Andy Reid also came out and said that the Eagles weren’t going to trade Donovan McNabb and now he’s a Redskin. Shanahan has been in the league a long time – he knows how the game is played. If he comes out and says that Haynesworth is on the trade block, then he knows that he diminishes the defensive tackle’s value. If he denies that the Skins want to trade Haynesworth, then he makes other teams come to him and doesn’t risk upsetting the player.

A lot goes on leading up to, and during the NFL draft. Teams talk all the time about trading players and picks, so we’ll see what happens. Even though Shanahan sounds convincing, I don’t think we’ve heard the last of the Haynesworth trade talks.

Where will Wade sign this summer?

Looking for a few different takes on whether or not Dwyane Wade is going to re-sign with the Heat? ESPN’s Free Agency Dime has a nice overview of all of their analysts’ opinions about where Wade will land this summer.

The consensus seems to be that Miami has the best bet of re-signing him, but that the Bulls are the next most likely option. Personally, I think the Heat will sign/acquire Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire or Carlos Boozer and re-sign Wade. If the Cavs lose in the Eastern Conference Finals, or even in the Finals, then LeBron is the darkhorse.

Tiger Woods getting heckled from the sky

The Last Angry Fan has a good post about who might be behind the aerial jabs aimed at Tiger and his recent history.

Rhonda Cook, an intrepid reporter for AJC, did a swell bit of investigating, and found out that the banners were set up through a Toledo, Ohio ad agency, but the company, Air America Aerial Ads, would not reveal who actually purchased the banners.

But don’t be too disappointed–there’s more on the way. Four more of the Tiger-bashing aerial ads will grace the skies over Augusta before the weekend is through.

It didn’t seem to have much of an impact on Woods, who shot a 68 on Thursday.

I just hope some reporter has the balls to ask Tiger about the signs.

Update: SPORTSbyBROOKS reports that the plane has been grounded by the FAA.

Jimmy Clausen latest to impress at Pro Day

According to Notre Dame beat writer Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune, quarterback Jimmy Clausen completed 57-of-59 passes at his personal Pro Day on Friday. His two incompletions apparently came from overthrowing receiver Robby Parris, who isn’t exactly a speed demon.

Clausen is now the third quarterback (Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy were the others) to impress at their individual pre-draft workouts. Bradford is expected to be taken with the first overall pick to the Rams, while Clausen should come off the board next and McCoy will probably be selected somewhere in the first three rounds.

Personally, I see Clausen winding up in Oakland. The Raiders have the eighth overall pick and unless a team like the Bills (who pick ninth) jump ahead of them or the Browns surprise and take Clausen at No. 7, then he and Oakland seem like a logical fit. The Raiders have to do something about their quarterback situation, because it’s clear that JaMarcus Russell isn’t the answer and Bruce Gradkowski isn’t regarded as a franchise player.

Many so-called pundits envision the Raiders taking an offensive tackle at No. 8 and in my first mock draft (which was done before the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to the Redskins), I too had Oakland taking a lineman (Anthony Davis of Rutgers). But now that Washington has McNabb, the Redskins won’t take Clausen at No. 4 and he should be available for the Raiders at No. 8. If he is, Al Davis might not pass on the opportunity to pair Clausen up with 2008 first round pick Darren McFadden and 2009 first rounder Darrius Heyward-Bey.
