Redeem Team rolls over Angola

It isn’t going to be this easy. The U.S. men’s basketball team beat Angola, 97-76, in preliminary pool play.

Dwyane Wade scored 19 points, James dominated the game with his size and strength on both ends, and the U.S. Olympic team wrapped up the easy portion of its schedule with a 97-76 victory Tuesday night.

Dwight Howard added 14 points and James finished with 12 for the Americans, who had another rough night from 3-point range but don’t appear to be stoppable in the open court. Wade was perfect from the field in Beijing until missing in the third quarter.

The Americans (2-0) moved on to face Greece, the team that stunned them two years ago in the semifinals of the world championship. Two days later comes a matchup with Spain, the team that won that tournament and is also 2-0 in this one after rallying to beat China in overtime behind 29 points from Pau Gasol.

Look for Team USA’s game against Greece on Thursday (early) morning on the USA Network.

Phelps is Three of a Kind: Wins Gold in 200 Freestyle

Three races, three gold medals, and three world records.

Michael Phelps is dominating the swimming competition at the Beijing Games, as he won the 200-meter freestyle race with a world record time of 1:42.96. He led throughout the race, with at times a full body length advantage ahead of silver medalist, Park Tae-hwan, of South Korea.

Phelps now joins fellow Americans Mark Spitz and Carl Lewis with nine career gold medals in Olympic competition. And he is 3-for-3 in his quest of breaking Spitz’s 36-year-old record of seven gold medals in one Olympiad.

There’s no rest for the wicked, as Phelps goes for his fourth gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly tomorrow evening. Oh by the way, he holds the world record in that event as well.

May-Treanor/Walsh dispatch Cuba

America’s beach volleyball sweethearts, Misty May-Treanor (right) and Kerri Walsh, took care of business in their second match of the Games, defeating Cuba in two games, 21-15 and 21-16. It was a business-like, efficient win for the seemingly unbeatable pair, who have now won 103 straight matches.

The match was never in doubt, and that was reflected in the announcing. We found out how both May and Walsh met their respective husbands. (It turns out Walsh actually met her husband at the scrimmage where she played with May for the first time. Talk about kismet!) We learned about how Walsh lost her wedding band during the duo’s first match in Bejing and how it was found by a volunteer who was sifting through the sand after the night’s matches were complete. And we found out that both May and Walsh want to start families after this tournament and how these Olympics might be their last.

The loss came on the same day (in the U.S., anyway) that the Cuban women’s indoor volleyball team crushed Team USA. I wonder if there is any kind of rivalry between indoor and beach given how much attention the latter is getting these days.

For May-Treanor/Walsh, next up is Norway, and that match will be televised in primetime Wednesday night. Then the duo will move on to a single-elimination tournament.

Couch Potato Alert: 8/11

– The Aaron Rodgers era officially begins Monday Night in Green Bay when the Packers take on the Bengals in their first preseason game. Don’t expect him to play much, but it’ll be interesting to see how he handles his first series as the number one guy. The game airs on ESPN at 8:00 PM Eastern.

– The New York Yankees, fresh off of getting swept in Anaheim this past weekend, head to Minnesota to face the Twins. The Twins are just a half game back of the White Sox in the AL Central, and the Yankees need to get their act together before it’s too late and they miss out on the playoffs. This is definitely an important series for both teams.

– The Olympics can be seen throughout the week on NBC, USA, CNBC, MSNBC, and The Oxygen Channel. There’s enough activity going on to the point where something’s always on.

– Team USA’s basketball team looks to build off their dominating performance yesterday when they take on Angola Tuesday at 8:00 AM Eastern. The game will be aired on the USA network. That’s damn early for those of us on the West coast!

By a Fingertip: U.S. men win Gold in 4×100 Freestyle Relay

That’s what it took.

Trailing French sprint star, Alain Bernard, going into the final turn, American Jason Lezak pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in Olympic history to capture the gold medal in the 4×100 freestyle swimming relay race at Beijing.

This was the biggest obstacle in Michael Phelps’ quest for eight gold medals in one Olympiad. He set the pace for his relay team, as they shattered the world record by a full four seconds with a time of 3:08.24. The victory was also bittersweet because Bernard had guaranteed his team would “smash” the U.S. squad in head-to–head competition. After the defeat, he left the pool in stunned silence.
