      Ben Roethlisberger won’t be charged

      Sources have told ESPN.com that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not be charged for sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman.

      Sources confirmed to ESPN’s Kelly Naqi that District Attorney Fred Bright will announce on Monday that charges will not be brought against Roethlisberger. Bright said in a statement Friday he has reviewed all the investigation reports and will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. ET Monday.
      Milledgeville police Chief Woodrow Blue said Wednesday his department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation had wrapped up their investigation into a 20-year-old college student’s claim that Roethlisberger sexually assaulted her early March 5 at a club in Milledgeville.

      It was the second time in a year that Roethlisberger has been accused of sexual misconduct. He also faces a lawsuit filed last July by a woman who says he raped her in 2008 at a Lake Tahoe hotel and casino, an allegation he denies. Roethlisberger has not been criminally charged in either case and has claimed counterdamages in the lawsuit.

      I wrote yesterday that I would have been surprised had Big Ben gotten into serious trouble. I’m not saying that he did or didn’t, but it seems like there isn’t enough proof that Roethlisberger sexually assaulted her and if the movie “Law Abiding Citizen” taught us anything, it’s that: it’s not what you know, it’s what you can prove. (That movie also taught us how to tunnel into prison, which was really, really sweet.)

      If Big Ben does escape charges, then he needs to re-evaluate how he’s spending his personal time. There will always be idiot, immature young women that thrust themselves onto athletes, movie stars and sports bloggers. And it’s apparent that Roethlisberger is one of the many morons that can’t help but take advantage of that. But if he wants to continue playing in Pittsburgh and in the NFL for that matter, he better stop putting himself in situations where he’s going to get in trouble.

      Shanahan shoots down Haynesworth trade rumors

      Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan dismissed the notion that the team will trade Albert Haynesworth in the offseason.

      From AOL NFL Fanhouse.com:

      On trading Albert Haynesworth: “There is nothing to clarify. It is just speculation. He’s part of the organization. I am just looking for him to come in and work and be like everyone else. No, we’re not going to trade him at all, unless someone gives us something we would have to consider — that’s pretty standard with any player on your roster. He’s a pretty smart guy. He’s really talented. I think I can get that out of him.”

      Andy Reid also came out and said that the Eagles weren’t going to trade Donovan McNabb and now he’s a Redskin. Shanahan has been in the league a long time – he knows how the game is played. If he comes out and says that Haynesworth is on the trade block, then he knows that he diminishes the defensive tackle’s value. If he denies that the Skins want to trade Haynesworth, then he makes other teams come to him and doesn’t risk upsetting the player.

      A lot goes on leading up to, and during the NFL draft. Teams talk all the time about trading players and picks, so we’ll see what happens. Even though Shanahan sounds convincing, I don’t think we’ve heard the last of the Haynesworth trade talks.

      Jimmy Clausen latest to impress at Pro Day

      According to Notre Dame beat writer Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune, quarterback Jimmy Clausen completed 57-of-59 passes at his personal Pro Day on Friday. His two incompletions apparently came from overthrowing receiver Robby Parris, who isn’t exactly a speed demon.

      Clausen is now the third quarterback (Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy were the others) to impress at their individual pre-draft workouts. Bradford is expected to be taken with the first overall pick to the Rams, while Clausen should come off the board next and McCoy will probably be selected somewhere in the first three rounds.

      Personally, I see Clausen winding up in Oakland. The Raiders have the eighth overall pick and unless a team like the Bills (who pick ninth) jump ahead of them or the Browns surprise and take Clausen at No. 7, then he and Oakland seem like a logical fit. The Raiders have to do something about their quarterback situation, because it’s clear that JaMarcus Russell isn’t the answer and Bruce Gradkowski isn’t regarded as a franchise player.

      Many so-called pundits envision the Raiders taking an offensive tackle at No. 8 and in my first mock draft (which was done before the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to the Redskins), I too had Oakland taking a lineman (Anthony Davis of Rutgers). But now that Washington has McNabb, the Redskins won’t take Clausen at No. 4 and he should be available for the Raiders at No. 8. If he is, Al Davis might not pass on the opportunity to pair Clausen up with 2008 first round pick Darren McFadden and 2009 first rounder Darrius Heyward-Bey.

      Big Ben announcement coming on Monday

      The DA will announce a decision on Ben Roethlisberger’s sexual assault case on Monday by 2:00PM ET, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting.

      Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney Fredric D. Bright this morning announced that he had completed his review of the investigation into a sexual assault accusation against Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and will announce his decision on whether to file charges Monday afternoon.

      “The investigation, interviews and report in the Roethlisberger matter have been completed and reviewed,” Mr. Bright said in a statement.

      “We will be announcing the decision in this case in a news conference to be held on Monday, April 12, 2010, at 2 p.m. in the Baldwin County Courthouse.”

      I’m not a lawyer, but I would be surprised if Roethlisberger gets into serious trouble. Unless there are witnesses that saw her being forced into the bathroom, then all anyone has is a bunch of he said, she said claims. And if she was drinking that night, it’ll be even harder for her to prove that Roethlisberger did anything wrong.

      If he did sexually assault her, I hope he’s convicted. But I think it’s going to be hard for her to prove that seeing as how the two of them were alone in a bathroom together.

      That said, if Big Ben is indicted, then he could face stiff punishment from the NFL. Michael Vick was indicted for dog fighting and the league suspended him indefinitely. I’m not saying the same thing will happen with Roethlisberger, but he’s about to have an interesting next couple of months.

      Could the Chargers be interested in trading for Lynch?

      ESPN’s Adam Schefter says that Bills running back Marshawn Lynch is the player that he thinks will most likely be traded this offseason.

      “No. 1, the Buffalo Bills running back, Marshawn Lynch,” Schefter replies. “They have a new coach, a new GM and any time there are new people in charge, they bring in their own players. Marshawn Lynch could be traded on or before the draft.”

      A recent Buffalo News story claims Lynch wants out of Buffalo. A recent Olean Times Herald column says the Bills would like to move him. But Lynch has no leverage, and the Bills probably couldn’t get enough in return for him to make it worth their while from a personnel standpoint.

      Schefter also named Brandon Marshall and Jason Campbell as two more players that will likely be dealt sometime this offseason.

      This is just speculation on my part, but I would expect that the Chargers would be interested in Lynch, who played at Cal. San Diego has a huge void at running back and seeing as how Lynch is only 23, he could still wind up being a featured back. Maybe a change of scenery would be good for the running back and if he’s traded, maybe it will motivate him to stay out of trouble.
