With Jackson out for the season, what are the Eagles options at free safety?

Marlin Jackson apparently has less luck than the victims of those “Saw” movies.

On Tuesday, Jackson suffered a ruptured Achilles’ tendon in his right foot, which will end his season – if not his career. The injury comes on the heels of the Eagles’ signing him to a two-year, $6 million deal to be their new free safety despite the fact that he suffered two knee injuries in the previous two seasons. The position now becomes the black hole of Philly’s defense for the second straight season.

What are the Bird’s plans to replace Jackson? O.J. Atogwe is now a free agent, but GM Howie Roseman told the Philadelphia Inquirer that the team won’t pursue the former Rams’ safety. Instead, the Eagles will rely on in-house options like rookie Nate Allen, Quintin Demps or possibly even Macho Harris (a cornerback that started eight games at FS last season) to fill the void created by Jackson’s injury.

Ex-girlfriend accused of racking up over $90,000 on Reggie Wayne’s debit card

Every guy has taken a beating from a girl at one point or another during his life. We’ve all wanted to erase the memory of that soul-sucking leach that our buddies still loving ask, “Remember when you dated her? Oh man, what were you thinking!”

Of course, not all of us have had our debit card information stolen from our ex, and had her rack up $93,000 in merchandise like Colts’ receiver Reggie Wayne’s former girlfriend did.

According to the Indianapolis Star, police and the Secret Service Asset Forfeiture Unit searched the home of a woman named Natasha McKenzie, who reportedly used Wayne’s bankcard to buy furniture, three television sets and various other electronics. A theft report filed by Wayne in April stated that McKenzie, an ex-girlfriend, made 333 transactions dating back to September of 2009 totaling more than $93,000.

McKenzie claims that Wayne had given her permission to use the card.

“Reggie knew what was going on. I sent Reggie plenty of thank you messages,” McKenzie told the station. “He knew everything that was going on. There was nothing fraud about it. . . . Reggie gave me all of his credit card information. I still have record of everything he gave me.”

Thompson said she has told police another story.

“The suspect has been interviewed by our detective and has made admissions to using the card numbers without authorization,” the IMPD spokesman said. “There is the potential for charges being filed.”

I’m no detective, but I’m thinking this is how everything went down: At some point during their relationship, Wayne allowed McKenzie to use his card. Using her quick goat thinking, she wrote down the information for safe keeping, just in case she needed to use it again.

When the couple split, she probably figured she was entitled to Wayne’s hard-earned money seeing as how he makes a lot of it and decided to help herself to three TV sets and new home decor. She probably even had the thought, “He’ll never even know the money is gone.”

Some guys never see their Bon Jovi CD again – Wayne’s relationship with McKenzie cost him over $90,000.

Rams safety Atogwe becomes a free agent

The Rams just lost one of their leading defensive playmakers, as safety O.J. Atogwe is now set to become a free agent. The team neglected to upgrade his tender offer to $6.976 million and now he’s free to sign with any team he wants.

From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

In a surprise move just before the start of free agency in March, the Rams tendered Atogwe, then a restricted free agent, at the lowest possible level — $1,226,000. At that level, they would have had the right of first refusal had Atogwe received an offer from another club but would not have received draft-pick compensation if the Rams chose to not match that offer.

The deadline for outside offers was April 15, and Atogwe received none. After that date, the Rams were obligated to pay Atogwe the higher tender amount to retain him for another season or work out a new contract, presumably a long-team deal.

Negotiations on such an agreement continued Tuesday until the deadline arrived. Landphere did not return phone messages Tuesday, and Atogwe could not be reached to comment.

Coming off surgery for a shoulder injury that sidelined him for the last four games of the 2009 season, Atogwe did not participate in the team’s offseason conditioning program. He also has not been present during the organized team activities under way at Rams Park.

The Lions, Vikings, Dolphins, Jaguars and even Cowboys might show interest in Atogwe now that he’s a free agent. The Bears were once rumored to be interested, but after drafting Major Wright in the third round and trading for Chris Harris (Panthers), Chicago is no longer in the market for a safety.

Atogwe could still return to the Rams, but it’s clear they didn’t want to pay him close to $7 million and why would they? He’s coming off a major injury and was an average player when he was healthy. That’s not to say he’s a bad player, but teams have to weigh the risk versus the reward when signing a free agent. That’s just common practice.

It’ll be interesting to see where he winds up because more than likely, he’ll upgrade whatever secondary he goes to.

Big Ben rejoins Steelers, in shape

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Ben Roethlisberger took the field with his teammates on Tuesday but will not talk to the media, while Jim Wexell of SteelCityInsider.com reports that Big Ben is in “much better shape” than he was a couple of months ago.

Roethlisberger appeared to be overweight when he showed up to workouts in March, but it’s not unusual for him to be out of shape at this point during the year. If Wexell’s report is true and he’s in much better shape now, maybe the events that transpired over these last couple of months woke him up.

And what a relief that would be for the Steelers. They don’t need Roethlisberger to clean up his act until he gets back from his suspension and then fall right back into the same pitfalls that got him in trouble in the first place. They need him to make wholesale changes so they don’t have to make a drastic decision, such as dumping him entirely.

Time will tell if the new, slimmer Big Ben has improved his decision-making.

“Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch” ready for shooting

Only Chad Ochocinco could take 85 women that want to date him, narrow that list down to 16 and then pair them in a March Madness-type bracket in order to choose one lucky winner. But he’ll be doing just that in his new reality TV show, “Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch.”

The Cincinnati Enquirer has the ridiculous details:

Ten episodes will be shot by June 30. “Ultimate Catch” premieres 9 p.m. July 11, and airs through Sept. 12, the first Sunday of the NFL season.

Eventually 16 will live together in a huge Los Angeles mansion. Ochocinco will pair the women in an NCAA basketball tournament-type bracket, and date those two together. One will lose and go home, the other will advance, in each episode.

Bengal fans will be happy to know that none of this will affect Ochocinco’s day job as a football player, because apparently the producers are working around his schedule. We wouldn’t want Chad missing any camps or team meetings because he needed to determine whether or not the No. 9 seed was going to knock off the No. 8.

I hate reality TV shows, but this is one I may actually watch just so I can hear his commentary.
