      Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly is the kind of impact player that NFL teams envision when they select a player in the top ten of the NFL Draft. Selected ninth overall in the 2012 NFL Draft, he was named Defensive Rookie of the Year that season and NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2013.

      What can he do for an encore in year three? Kuechly’s eyes are set on the Super Bowl. Kuechly’s old-school physical style and “Smelf-confidence” lends itself perfectly to a partnership with old-school icon Old Spice.

      At every level you’ve played, you’ve been a tackling machine. How do you account for this? What do you do differently than other players?

      “I’ve always had a great group of guys around me. At Boston College, Bill McGovern (former DC) did a great job and he is the reason why I developed in college. And when I got to Carolina, I had some older guys around like Jon Beason [and] Thomas Davis that taught me a lot, and I learned what it takes to be successful. So I owe a lot to those guys for the success I’m having today.”

      Who was your favorite player growing up?

      “Ray Lewis or Brian Urlacher. Those guys played hard and played a long time at a very high level.”

      How do you feel about the Urlacher comparisons?

      “I think you’ve got to look at how long Brian played, how high a level, the Pro Bowls, he’s been to a Super Bowl; I think that’s the most important thing. I’ve played two years and that’s it. It’s cool to look at it now, but I have to keep looking forward, keep working.”

      Who would win an arm wrestling contest between you and Urlacher?

      “Oh, man I’m sure he would. He is a big dude. “

      Talk about the partnership with Old Spice.

      “I partnered up with them to talk about the hair product that came out earlier this year. There’s shampoos, conditioners, different gels. The biggest thing behind them is the simplicity to use the product. You can use it real quick and don’t have to take a whole lot of time. We use it quite a bit in the locker room. I passed it out to some of the linebackers and everybody is loving it right now.”

      Bengals sign Andy Dalton

      If you look at the headlines regarding Andy Dalton’s new contract, it seems like he broke the bank getting $115 million over 6 years. But we’ve learned that the devil is in the details when it comes to NFL contracts, and this breakdown from ProFootballTalk explains how this contract really sets the bar for second-tier quarterbacks.

      The guaranteed money really isn’t that high, so the Bengals aren’t taking a massive risk hear. As a Browns fan I was hoping they would sign Dalton to a stupid contract that tied them up long term, but that didn’t happen. Still, Dalton will be making some serious money and tying up the cap a bit, and frankly he’s just an above-average quarterback in my opinion. He’s been terrible in the playoffs when defenses get stiffer, and I’ll be surprised if he ever leads the Bengals to a Super Bowl.

      Still, as a business decision this wasn’t a terrible one.

      The Ray Rice mess

      It’s hard to find a dissenting opinion about this, unless of course you’re a Ravens fans. Despite his apology and trying to do things right since the incident, there’s little Ray Rice can do to erase the image of him dragging his unconscious girlfriend out of that elevator. And that’s a problem for Roger Goodell, who made one of the most criticized decisions in recent memory with his paltry two-game suspension of Rice.

      The fallout has been ugly, and it could get worse if Josh Gordon loses a year for barely failing a marijuana test that wouldn’t have counted had the B sample been counted first.

      The NFL is as popular as ever, but now that popularity results in even greater scrutiny. All the positive press the NFL gets when it breaks out the pink colors every may turn sour this year as everyone will be focusing on the fact that Ray Rice has been permitted to play.

      Meanwhile, Goodell has been hiding from the press. Let’s see if he says anything this weekend at the Hall of Fame festivities.

      Scores Report Interview with Chris Johnson

      Who knows more about staying clean than New York Jets running back Chris Johnson? One of the fastest players in NFL history, Johnson knows all about bursting through holes untouched and unsullied by opposing defenders.

      We spoke to him about his partnership with Mr. Clean’s Magic Eraser, how it feels to run a 4.24 40-yard dash and his monster 2009 season.

      CJ2K! How is Mr. Clean doing these days?

      “He’s pretty good. You gotta keep your whips and your clothes clean, and Mr. Clean is all about that.”

      I made a mistake the other day. I bought these really nice white Polo shoes – low cut, crisp, the kind you wear without socks. I was looking good. That night, I had an unfortunate incident with a mud puddle on the way home. Guess who was there for me when I needed him the next day?

      You’ve got six TD runs of over 80 yards in your career. The next closest players only have three. How do you account for that?

      “It isn’t just one thing. It has to do with everything: vision, speed, once you get out in the open not getting caught, being able to make people miss. On top of that, you’ve got to have your offensive line and the receivers blocking for you downfield. There is a lot to be aware of.

      What’s your favorite play: a toss sweep, a trap or what?

      “Stretch play. Because it gives you a couple different holes to choose from and there’s always a cutback lane.”

      Is there a run in your career that is your signature run? A play you look at after and you’re like, “That’s what I’m all about.”

      “A couple years ago I had a run versus Houston. It was a trap play and I came through the hole. My offensive lineman was trying to get to the block but he wasn’t going to get there, so I grabbed him and threw him into the defender and it opened up and I ran.”

      Johnny Manziel likes to party

      Right – like we didn’t know this already.

      Well, stuff like this will get plenty of attention, because Johnny Manziel loves the attention and outlets like ESPN can’t talk enough about him. The whole topic is already exhausting.

      In the end, the key here is whether he can perform at the highest level while maintaining this partying lifestyle. The best quarterbacks live and breath football, so you have to wonder about a trip to Las Vegas in the middle of his first OTAs with the Browns. Did he really maximize his learning of the playbook by hanging out in Las Vegas? Only a fool would think that. But, the issue is how he plays when it matters. If he stumbles, stuff like this weekend’s events will be thrown back in his face over and over again.

      This isn’t 1976 when party animal Kenny Stabler led the Oakland Raiders to a Super Bowl season. Johnny Football’s antic will be broadcast everywhere. If he plays well and wins he’ll add to his legend. If he messes up he’ll have to answer for it.
