Who anointed Bill O’Brien as a quarterback guru? Sure, he coached Tom Brady in his prime, but wouldn’t Brady make any quarterback coach and offensive coordinator look good?
O’Brien’s track record in Houston with his quarterbacks is an embarrassment, and things took a turn for the worse on opening day as he benched his starter for the second time in three years on opening day. What a joke . . .
And now they’re throwing Deshaun Watson into the fire on Thursday night against the Bengals behind their miserable offensive line. Watson may be better than Tom Savage, but he’s a rookie with a weak arm and was probably overdrafted due to his incredible college career.
This looks like an impending disaster, and Browns fans can rejoice as they have the first two Texans draft picks in 2018!
Blake Bortles looks like an epic draft bust, and he’s been a mess this preseason. But when your backup is Chad Henne, you know you’ll be stinking up the joint at that position regardless of which way you go.
With that backdrop, Doug Marrone decided to give their overpaid youngster the shot to start the season. Expect a heavy dose of the running game with the idea of making things as easy as possible for Bortles.
The Atlanta Falcons led the Super Bowl 28-3. Late in the fourth quarter, they had an 8-point lead with minutes left and the ball just beyond the New England 20-yard line. A field goal seals the game and a Super Bowl title, and yet on second down Kyle Shanahan called a pass play and Matt Ryan took a devastating sack.
Of course New England deserves credit for the comeback, and they’ll get plenty as the New England dynasty and the Tom Brady legacy will be discussed ad nauseum. But the story of this game is the Atlanta collapse.
