BC’s Ryan is real deal

Got the chance to watch the Boston College-Virginia Tech game Thursday night and was quite impressed with Eagles quarterback Matt Ryan. The first thing that stood out was his arm strength – he deliverers a great ball and has a nice touch on the short to intermediate routes. He seemed confident in his throws and when he ran the two-minute offense in the fourth quarter, he appeared to be in full command.

The biggest take away, however, was how Ryan stayed clam and poised throughout the entire game. Va Tech has a solid defense and they battered him around for three and a half quarters. Yet when it came down to crunch time, Ryan moved around the pocket well, scrambled for more time and overall, made two great plays to rally #2 BC to a 14-10 victory after being down 10-0 with just six minutes left to play in the fourth.

Off the field, rumor has it that Ryan is a student of the game and is always breaking down film. Talk about intangibles, Matt Ryan looks like the stud of the 2008 quarterback class.

Goodell strikes again

Due to the title of this blog, you’re probably thinking to yourself, “Wow, did another freaking NFL player get suspended?” No, this news is positive. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the league office have decided to shorten the time teams get during the first two rounds of the draft. Instead of the agonizing 15 minutes teams used to get to make a selection in the first round, they now only get 10. And in the second round, teams now get seven minutes instead of 10, plus the draft time will be moved from 12:00pm ET to 3:00pm ET and only the first two rounds will be conducted on the first day. Usually the first three rounds occur on the first day, but now rounds 3-7 will be moved to day two.

“We believe this will make for a more streamlined and efficient draft,” commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement issued during the league owners meetings in Philadelphia.

Good call. Anyone who sat through the first round of last year’s draft saw it go six hours and eight minutes – the longest first round in the history of the draft. These new changes might not be best for the teams, but they certainly are better for those fans that don’t want to donate 24 hours to watching the entire first round.

So that’s why Leinart slipped to #10…

ESPN The Magazine recently handed the keys over to a number of different athletes and Matt Leinart took the opportunity (as a reporter) to investigate why he slipped to the Cardinals at #10 in last year’s draft.

One of the guys he cornered was Tennessee head coach Jeff Fisher (who really seems like a standup guy, by the way). After some prodding, Fisher told Leinart why the Titans took Vince Young instead.

Matt Leinart: Coach, seriously. Can you tell me what happened? Please.

Jeff Fisher: Matt, do you mind if I go back?

ML: Go back?

JF: Yeah.

ML: Okay.

JF: You see, I had a grandfather who passed away 15 years ago. He lived to be about 90. And right before he died, he gave away a bunch of rare coins. I got a $20 gold piece that I use every year for the draft. It’s brought us a lot of luck over the past few years. Well, last year, we couldn’t make a decision. So I threw this coin in the air. You were heads, Vince was tails — and it came down tails.

ML: So my career was decided on a coin toss?

JF: Matt, I don’t know what else to say.

ML: There’s nothing left to say, Coach.

If true (and I think it is), that’s a pretty amazing story.

Ten draft day moves that may dramatically affect the ’07 season

While most NFL Draftniks say it takes at least three years to rate a team’s draft, I’m not waiting. I’ve got 10 draft day moves — five good and five not so good — that could affect the 2007 season in my latest column for Bullz-Eye.com. Where did Cleveland’s selection of Brady Quinn and New England’s trade for Randy Moss rank? Click here to find out.

Seventh Round Recap

Here’s a snap shot the NFL Draft’s round seven:

Best Value:
Brandon Siler, LB, Chargers (No. 240) – Siler was once regarded as the second best middle linebacker prospect in the draft and a potential second or third round pick. The reason he slipped was because of his lack of experience and could have probably used another year at Florida. However, he’s a true playmaker, should benefit from playing with a top San Diego defense and was a great find in the seventh round. Other values: Deshawn Wynn, RB, Packers; Dallas Baker, WR, Steelers; Chase Pittman, DE, Browns.

Potential Sleeper:
Ben Patrick, TE, Cardinals (No. 215) – Shocking that Patrick dropped into the second round because his stock was on the rise after the NFL Combine. He’s got a ton of talent, but didn’t play at a Division I program, so therefore he dropped. It’s interesting to see how he’ll fit into that offense though, especially since Arizona took Leonard Pope in last year’s draft. Other sleepers: Clark Harris, TE, Packers.
