      Shaq in ‘better shape’ now

      Brian Windhorst of Cleveland.com reports that Shaquille O’Neal appears to be in better shape now than when he first injured his hand.

      He wasn’t on a scale, but to the naked eye he appears to have lost weight since he went down with the injury just about a month ago.

      When he left to go to Florida after the surgery he was telling teammates that he’d not just be back before the end of the regular season, but that he’d be in better shape when he comes back than went he left.

      Nothing can prepare anyone for playing in real games and it will probably take a while for him to get some rhythm when he does return. But if there were any concerns about O’Neal letting himself go because he’s not playing, take it from me — it appears to have been quite the opposite.

      When we learned that O’Neal was going to miss significant time due to thumb surgery, his overall conditioning was a huge concern, no pun intended. While cardio-vascular conditioning is different from overall weight, it’s a lot easier to get back into playing shape if you’re not carrying around 10-20 lbs of extra weight. And it appears that Shaq has been serious about his conditioning while he’s been injured.

      If true, this is a big boost for the Cavs’ title hopes (and chances of retaining LeBron this summer).

      Two pilots grounded after flying too low for football game

      Two F/A-18 pilots have been grounded after flying just a few hundred feet above Bobby Dodd Stadium in downtown Atlanta for a fly over before a Georgia Tech football game last year.

      From the Daily Press:

      The board found that they chose to fly using barometric altitude measurements (feet above sea level) instead of radar altitude measurements (feet above ground level) but failed to adjust their low-altitude warning systems accordingly.

      By the time the alarm sounded, the pilots didn’t have enough time to correct the mistake.

      Although the pilots “inexplicably failed to recognize” how low they were flying, the board concluded, their lapse was neither intentional nor malicious. It recommended putting both pilots on probation, an outcome endorsed and forwarded up multiple levels of the chain of command.

      But the final authority on the matter, Rear Adm. R.J. O’Hanlon, commander of Naval Air Force Atlantic, disputed the conclusion that Condon, the lead pilot, had unintentionally flown that low.

      ”The arguments written by prior endorsers that LCDR Condon’s actions were an honest mistake are not persuasive,” O’Hanlon wrote. “He is a senior, very experienced department head who placed his aircraft and wingman in a very dangerous position.”

      O’Hanlon also had tough words for Fryman. Despite a spotless record, O’Hanlon wrote, Fryman’s complacent response to the altitude transgression and lack of situational awareness were “unforgivable in my view.”

      That’s sad that the two pilots lost their wings over this. They either made an honest mistake or wanted to give everyone a good show and now years of hard work has been erased because of it.

      If Japan thinks that’s bad…

      The Japanese Olympic Committee is still outraged over the way snowboarder Kazuhiro Kokubo wore his Vancouver Olympic uniform in “hip hop” style last month and proceeded to scold Japan’s skiing officials about tightening up its morals.

      From Yahoo! Sports:

      Dreadlocked boarder Kazuhiro Kokubo narrowly escaped being kicked out of the Games after arriving with his trousers pulled low on his hips, shirt hanging out and his tie loose.

      The 21-year-old with double nose piercings was banned from attending the opening ceremony and forced to apologize at a news conference before finishing eighth in the men’s halfpipe.

      A senior Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) official said on Monday apologies were not enough.

      “All members of the (Ski Association of Japan) must provide strict guidance to the athletes,” JOC secretary general Noriyuki Ichihara told reporters on Monday.
      “The JOC will also try to lend its weight to the moral education of the athletes.”

      Wow, I couldn’t imagine what the JOC presided over all American athletes if they’re upset over how Kokubo dressed. They probably would have petitioned our government to shut down the entire freaking country after Pacman Jones’ fourth arrest.

      Joe Johnson says he’ll “sacrifice” to play with LeBron in NYC

      Joe Johnson was asked about his free agent plans after the Hawks’ game against the Knicks, and here’s what he had to say…

      The inquisition of Joe Johnson began at about 6:20 p.m. ET, lasted approximately 10 minutes and yielded the following nugget:

      If a certain someone, like maybe this certain guy in Cleveland, accepted a max offer from the Knicks and wanted Johnson as a sidekick, Johnson would be willing to sign for less than the maximum.

      “I’ll sacrifice,” Johnson said.

      Those words will carry some weight as we head toward July 1, 2010, because there aren’t a whole lot of max-level free agents out there who are willing to go on the record saying they’ll sacrifice money if it translates into success on the court.

      But Johnson went ahead and said it Monday, and given the fact that he turned down a five-year max contract extension from the Atlanta Hawks last summer, that statement ranks as an eyebrow-raiser.

      Chris Sheridan goes on to speculate about what the Knicks might do if Plan A (LeBron) and Plan B (D-Wade) both fail. How about a Bosh/Johnson or a Stoudemire/Johnson combo in NYC?

      While LeBron, Wade and Bosh are all playing coy about their free agency plans, Johnson is refreshingly honest about all the possibilities. Considering that he’s playing for one of the top teams in the East, it’s an interesting way to go.

      A LeBron/JJ combo in New York probably isn’t going to happen. I have a feeling that LeBron will only go to the Knicks if he knows he’s going to play with Wade or Bosh. Usually championships are built around one excellent perimeter player and one excellent big man — think Kobe-Shaq, Parker-Duncan, Wade-Shaq — but Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen did make the 2/3 combo work very well in Chicago, though MJ made a living in the post. LeBron doesn’t like to play with his back to the basket.

      Przybilla re-injures knee…in shower

      Talk about bad luck in Portland. The Blazers’ injured players are getting more injured.

      Per Real GM…

      Joel Przybilla re-injured his surgically-repaired right knee on Saturday and will require another surgery, the team said Sunday.

      Przybilla re-injured the knee when he slipped while entering the shower at his home in Milwaukee.

      Tough break for Przybilla — I guess he should have invested in one of those no-slip shower mats.
