Dirk Nowitzki opens up about the downfall of Avery Johnson

On the eve of opening training camp, it didn’t take long for Dallas Mavericks star forward Dirk Nowitzki to give his views on former coach Avery Johnson’s handling of last years’ team.

In an interview with the Dallas Morning News, Nowitzki felt Johnson’s regimented style and lack of offensive creativity were the chief reasons for the Mavericks troubled 2007-08 season. He was optimistic the offense would open up with the acquisition of Jason Kidd from New Jersey, but it never materialized down the home stretch of the regular season.

Nowitzki is excited about playing for new coach Rick Carlisle, as the two have communicated over the summer about implementing a uptempo offense for this coming season. He was noncommittal on his plans after his contract expires in the 2010-11 season.

Monta Ellis injury occurred on a moped

He tried to tell the Golden State Warriors that he was hurt playing basketball, but the injuries Monta Ellis weren’t consistent with that story. It turns out Ellis was injured in a low-speed moped accident.

The team has not decided how to punish Ellis for violating the terms of his new six-year, $66 million deal by participating in a banned activity and trying to cover it up.

Since riding a moped is prohibited under the uniform player contract, the Warriors could move to terminate Ellis’ deal, though such a move seems highly unlikely.

A possible punishment for Ellis is a heavy fine or suspension. It’s also possible the Warriors will let Ellis off the hook completely, chalking the incident up to the youngster’s maturation process.

The question seems to be what steps the Warriors will take to punish Ellis for violating the terms of his contract, but what I really want to know is why Ellis was riding a moped in the first place? What’s the upside?

Cavs owner Dan Gilbert takes the underrated “head in the sand” approach

Dan Gilbert doesn’t like the speculation that LeBron James is going to leave Cleveland when his contract is up in two years.

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert says the speculation that LeBron James will leave Cleveland in two years is out of line and “an insult to the city.”

Gilbert says it’s nothing more than conjecture from bored sports reporters.

He says James has given no indication that he plans to leave for New York after his contract expires in 2010.

Okay, Mr. Gilbert, we “bored sports reporters” will just sit here and pretend that there isn’t a giant ticking clock on LeBron’s stay in Cleveland. I’m sure he’ll re-sign if, in two years, the Cavs are still a middle-of-the-road playoff team in the East, and there’s every indication that they will be.

Which is a bigger insult to Cleveland – speculating about a possible LeBron departure or pretending that it won’t happen?

Lisa Guerrero now blogging for L.A. Times

Lisa GuerreroRemember Lisa Guerrero? (See the photo to the right if you need a refresher.)

Well apparently the former Playboy pin-up and Monday Night Football sideline reporter is now blogging for the L.A. Times according to SPORTSbyBROOKS.com.

Inspired by one part T.J. Simers & one part Barack Obama (no, really), the former sideline strutter and Playboy pin-up has decided to lend her talents to the blogosphere. And in the first entry in her new column, modestly entitled THE FABULOUS FORUM, Lisa talks about her presumably favorite subject – herself.

Here’s a small sampling of Lisa’s literary skills:

When I told a friend that I’d be writing for the L.A. Times, she told her husband. His response was,

“Really? Did she get fat?”

Now I know from experience that the camera adds 15 pounds, but I had no idea that picking up a pen and pad would give me a big butt. (Ed: I like big butts, and I cannot lie.) However, one glance at the sportswriters in the Dodgers press box would confirm that theory.

When you’re hidden behind a laptop instead of preening in front of a camera, there’s a natural tendency to inhale a few more Dodger Dogs and let those pounds add up.
Riveting.

Guerrero promises that future columns will be “fueled by a strong cup of joe – but most strong opinions.” So, all you fat sportswriters better watch out – Lisa’s coming after you, and she’s not pulling any punches!

The over/under on how long she makes it: 90 days. The Scores Report is now taking all wagers.
