Diamondbacks acquire Reds’ outfielder Adam Dunn

The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired Cincinnati Reds’ outfielder Adam Dunn in exchange for minor league prospect Dallas Buck and two players to be named later.

In 114 games, the 28-year-old is tied for the Major League lead with 32 homers. The right fielder is hitting .233 on the season with 74 RBIs, an on-base percentage of .373 and a slugging percentage of .528.

Dunn, who is eligible for free agency after making $13 million this year, figures to boost an Arizona offense that has been an Achilles’ heel at times for the club this year. The D-backs have been without the services of right fielder Justin Upton, who went on the disabled list July 9 with a strained oblique muscle. They also lost their starting left fielder in Eric Byrnes prior to that with a torn hamstring.

The D-backs suffered another blow Saturday when second baseman Orlando Hudson was lost to a season-ending wrist injury.

Dunn certainly adds some pop to Arizona’s offense and even though they lost Hudson for the season, things are looking up for the D-Backs, who currently have a 1.5 game lead over the Dodgers in the NL West. Dunn will never hit .300 (or .280 for that matter), but for a team that has had trouble scoring runs, he’ll provide a boost in the power department.

Kapler’s walk-off highlights wild Sunday for MLB

– Gabe Kapler got one hit out of seven at bats. That one hit was a walk-off homer against the Nationals in the bottom of the 13th inning. This was the Brewers fifth straight win, and put them just four games back of the Cubbies in the NL Central. Kapler was just one of four players Sunday who ended the game with a game-winning hit.

– Chone Figgins got an RBI single against Mariano Rivera to complete a sweep of the Yankees. Tony Pena Jr. picked the perfect time to break out of an 0-17 slump on Sunday; he singled in the 10th inning to drive in Mark Teahen and lead the Royals to a 5-4 over the Twins. The Dodgers suffered a heartbreaking loss to the rival Giants Sunday when Eugenio Velez hit an infield single that drove in Aaron Rowand in the ninth inning for the game winning run. The Dodgers were up 4-3 heading into the final inning.

– Brandon Webb was able to collect his MLB-leading 17th win in an all-around impressive game Sunday against the Atlanta Braves. Webb put in six solid innings, and even drove in a couple of runs to help his own cause in a 6-1 victory.

– Cliff Lee isn’t far behind Webb, Lee won his 16th game of the season in a masterful performance in Toronto Sunday. The Tribe finished a sweep of the Blue Jays with a 4-0 win. Lee pitched eight shutout innings and continues the lead the American League in wins and ERA.

– The Tampa Bay Rays won their 71st game of the season, a franchise high. Who would have thought they’d be so good this year? They’ve always reminded me of the Detroit Lions of baseball. The talent was always there, but I never thought they’d get their act together. Congrats Tampa!

Boom Goes the Dynamite

Ali G interviews David Beckham and Posh Spice

Every time I see that “Boom Goes the Dynamite” clip I cringe and I can’t help but feel awful for the young man…but I just can’t look away.

Poor bastard.

Manny Ramirez wants to be a Yankee

According to the New York Post via a close friend of Manny Ramirez, the former Red Sox outfielder wants to be a Yankee next year.

According to people who have spoken to the eccentric outfielder since he was dealt to L.A. on July 31, Ramirez wants to sign a free-agent deal with the Yankees this offseason and get 19 chances a year to punish Boston.

“He wants to play for the Yankees so he can get at the Red Sox,” a close friend of Ramirez’s told The Post.

Of course, every free agent says he wants to play for the Yankees. They pay well, will always have a chance to make the postseason, and when they show an interest in a free agent, the price from other clubs skyrockets.

Considering Ramirez is represented by Scott Boras, every imaginable angle will be played when the 36-year-old, a product of George Washington High School in Washington Heights, will become a free agent following the World Series.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman would not comment on the situation. Ramirez forced the Red Sox to deal him to the Dodgers by badmouthing the organization, not hustling and sitting out a July 25 game against the Yankees with a knee injury that didn’t show up on an MRI the next day.

Well that’s a big middle finger to the Red Sox now isn’t it? How about the Dodgers, too? Hey thanks for trading for me L.A., but there’s no chance in hell I’m going to re-sign with you because I want to piss off my former team.

Obvious statement of the century: Manny is a nut, regardless of if this report is true or not.

Fitch and St. Pierre headline UFC 87

Georges St-Pierre, ranked by many as the second best pound-for-pound UFC fighter (behind Anderson Silva), will step into the Octagon to face number one contender Jon Fitch.

Fitch has won eight consecutive fights, a record in modern UFC history, but chances are you’ve never heard of him. This Saturday, he gets a chance to make a name for himself when he takes on St-Pierre for the UFC Welterweight title. This is St-Pierre’s second time holding the title, and he hopes to make it a long reign. Will Fitch gain the respect of MMA fans across the globe, or will he be GSP’s next victim?

Other notable matches include Brock Lesnar facing off against “The Texas Crazyhorse” Heath Herring in a UFC Heavyweight Bout. No one is sure what to make of the former WWE star as of yet, but this is a fight that he can’t afford to lose. It’ll be a great chance to see if he’s for real. Also, Roger Huerta will battle Kenny Florian in a UFC Lightweight matchup that has potential to be an amazing fight. Huerta, who took part of the 2007 UFC Fight of the Year against Clay Guida, is pure joy to watch. Florian on the other hand, has been on a tremendous streak since losing his one and only fight at 155 pounds against Sean Sherk back in 2006.

This is shaping up to be a very entertaining card! Tune in this Saturday on PPV.
